unknown red and yellow flower and knot weed
« on: August 11, 2011, 07:20:08 PM »
I used to grow this plant about 5 years ago but it didnt survive. A plant has reappeared and I cant remember what it is. The flowers never open or it opens at night. What is it

Something that looks like a miniature Japanese knotweed has also appeared. It needs to come out quickly if it's going to be invasive. What is it?

Davey, I would never have remembered Oenothera

Lori, the buckwheat may have been in bird seed set out last winter

Thanks you!

I must get out more.... I've never seen a two-tone red and yellow Oenothera.

I was just going to say that the buckwheat probably came in in the bird seed when I read Mark's reply.
Whenever we get something odd in the garden our first thought is to blame the bird seed!

Maggi,

I've never seen an Oenothera of that colour either, but I must admit that the evening primrose was the first thing I thought of as well.  It's beautiful, Mark. 8)

Yes please, Mark.  It was only the buds that made me think Oenothera  because the flower colour was so "odd" !  To have a two tone would be fun.

Mark,

Some of the Oenothera are on our banned list, so I'd need to know the species derivations of it for me to bring it into the country.  There are 26 species on the allowed list, and 7 on the banned list, so there's a good chance that it could be allowed in. ;D

It looks very much like Oenothera "Blood Orange" from plant world seeds http://www.plant-world-seeds.com/store/view_seed_item/1444
