Dwarf Rhododendron for ID
« on: May 30, 2010, 05:14:26 PM »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone could ID this Dwarf Rhododendron for me please.
I think the photos describe it well enough without any text from me.

John
You are absolutely correct. :) I remember it now.
And I bought it from Glendoick ;D

Two requests for ID's in two weeks and both answered. What a great forum this is ;D
Though I think I may have some more difficult ones, (not Rhodos.), to come in future weeks when they flower.

Many thanks John!

I agree with John... it's an 'Arctic Tern'.

This is a slightly unusual plant, being thought to be a hybrid between a Ledum ( now subsumed into Rhododendron) and R. trichostomum.... thus the taxonomists turned it from a bi-generic hybrid into a "plain" hybrid at one fell swoop.

You can  see that the foliage is very "ledum-ish" while the flowers are sort of half way between the  ledum style and the daphne -like flowers of the trichostomum... nice thing!

Maggi,
You are a mine of information on so many subjects.
All I wanted was a name but your further information is really interesting. I will have to go and have a good look at it tomorow instead of just admiring it.
Many thanks.

Thanks, Graham.... I thought such a snippet of info would be of interest to a few folks.... nice to have more than the name, I think, when there is a wee tale to tell.

While were sort of on the subject of Pogonantha Rhododendrons, here are a few in flower here earlier this week...

trichostomum (Jens Birck selection)

primuliflorum 'Doker La'

Sarled  - a cross between sargentianum and trichostomum

Schneeflöcken  - a cross between a Pogo species and my mind's gone blank. Maggi  ???

Maggi - I found an old Glendoick catalogue where Scheeflöcken is simply listed as a x trichostomum.

A couple more Pogonantha  pix - this one may be 'Bridal Bucket Bouquet'.

Maggi - I had no idea men did such things indoors, the garage or toolshed perhaps, but never indoors.  Hang on to that one unless more valuable things go missing - chocolates etc.

Heavens to Murgatroyd! There is more chance of me returning to svelte beauty than there is of the Boss tidying the garage  (his woodworking place) or any of the several sheds on the premises. ::) :-X

It is simply that on occasion, in an attempt "to show me how it's done", he blitzes some innocent part of the house.... sadly only achieving the destruction of one of my old hoards of ephemera... the swine! The man is a despot in more ways than one, I tell you. :P

And this behaviour in spite of my agrement to remove/pass on some of my Erics to make  more room for his bulbs...... can't remember when we last sacrificed one of his rhodos.....I should "gift" them all to his ownership, it might protct them better. :-\
