Repotting bulbs with good/fresh roots
« on: July 03, 2017, 10:18:22 AM »
Some of my bulbs in pots do not have a clear rest period. E.g. Hyacinthoides non-scripta; Narcissus varduliensis. Once the leafs have withered, many new roots (or good old ones?) are present. Do I keep the roots intact before repotting, or let them dry out in the air, or even cut these healthy roots? Any advice? Thanks in advance.

If the roots are new I would repot VERY carefully, taking every care not to damage the new roots. If it is older roots that still seem good then I'd put gently back in a pot, perhaps with only sand, and left them dry for a bit longer.

I think they are older roots. Do you mean that I let them dry out completely in sand and then cut them before the new roots start to grow?

I think they will only need a short while in sand to allow them to wither naturally. Then they can be cut if they do not  drop naturally but great care must be taken not to damage any new roots.
