AGS show at Harlow 4th March 2017

It was the AGS show at Harlow today.
 Kit Strange, from Kew Gardens and also Show Secretary ( ably assisted by the Livermores, among others!)  has had a busy time! She posted pix of some super plants being packed up ready at Kew to go to the show and I believe that the Kew Display has been awarded a Gold Medal.




Solène Dequiret  won a Silver medal for her display of  photos of Californian plants  ( this is the youtube link in the photo )



and a forumist has hit the premier award for the second show running - this time it is Peter Hood, who was awarded the Farrer Medal  for a super  pan of Corydalis sewerzowii

It has been bigger,but it was doing nothing ,so I divided it to see if it would get going again.I now have 2 small bits in flower.

Just another comment - elsewhere and for some time I've felt strongly that the Alpine Garden Shows - but not only these, alpine gardening in general - do not get advertised sufficiently to the wider horticultural world. The Show at Harlow was extraordinary in the quality of plants grown and exhibited, but also in the range of plants available from specialist nurseries, and both these aspects are vital features of these Shows. To encourage more interest in gardening with these plants - not only in displaying them at the Shows - and thus attracting more people to join and participate in the Alpine and Rock Garden Societies, I would personally like to see more partnership across the different societies. That is my personal opinion simply as a member of several of them. As Robert Amos says in his thoughtful article 'Just how do we assess the true value of alpines?' (AGS Journal 84, March 2016) - "AGS members must make a collective effort to educate both ourselves and the public of the ecological value of alpine plants... If we get this message across, positive change will happen, like in plants, from the roots up". This is what the Alpine Shows do if they really do attract more people to discover these plants, but how they fail if they don't.
