Travellers in Ottoman Lands The Botanical Legacy

Saturday 13 May – Sunday 14 May 2017
Venue: Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
This pioneering two-day international Seminar is organised by the Association for the Study of Travel in Egypt and the Near East (ASTENE) in conjunction with the Centre for Middle Eastern Plants (part of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh), Cornucopia and support from the Turkish Consulate General in Edinburgh.
Papers to be presented cover a wide range of fascinating themes including the flora of the region and travellers who described it — literary, pictorial and photographic depictions of the botanical and horticultural legacy of Ottoman Lands —floral and related motifs in Ottoman art — Ottoman gardens — culinary and medicinal aspects of the botanical legacy — preserving the horticultural legacy — everything from snowdrops and tulips to the Cedars of Lebanon! Speakers are drawn from Europe, America, Australia, Turkey and other parts of the Middle East. There will also be opportunities to visit small related exhibitions, and to tour the RBGE herbaria and its living collections with botanical and horticultural experts.
