« on: August 15, 2016, 02:49:14 PM »
I am surprised no-one seems to have noticed Avon's dormant list is now online with some lovely new items for sale.

I had noticed the list, Brian, just too busy getting my order in to post on the Forum.  Some bargains too, more exciting than the Olympics!

Another year, another early warning of a list to come!
From Maxine:

"It must be the season for it - but don't forget Avon Bulbs Dormant List will be live in the week beginning 10th July - it would be earlier, but we are busy at Hampton Court next week - rumour has it that Midas will be putting in an appearance on the list!!!"

I had a quick word with Alan Street of Avon Bulbs at the Hampton Court Flower Show yesterday.  It was a very warm day so my heat-addled brain might have confused some of the details but my recollection is that he told me that 'Midas' will indeed be on sale at £100 on the List which will be issued next week.  He hopes to have built-up enough stock to meet demand, although that remains to be seen.  I think he indicated that 'Midas' was one of those select few snowdrops that change colour as the flower matures, so the marks are initially green but then change to bright yellow.  If I've got that aspect right I'm sure this will be confirmed in the List (otherwise please ignore).

Apart from 'Midas' at £100 I noted 'Kryptonite' at £120 and several other novelties.

Where they do get some of (most of) their prices from? Go on then, tell me it's all about the Law of supply of demand? Antoine Augustin Cournot has a lot to answer for ::)

Betty Hansell looks a bit rag dollish! Think I'll wait for the end of season sales in 2018.

Go on then, tell me it's all about the Law of supply of demand?

I heard it alleged that one particular person once bought snowdrops at the Myddleton House sale in London (which is held at the start of the season) then immediately put them up for sale on eBay and was able to make a profit by so doing.  I believe they became persona non grata after that - but it's a demonstration of how the Law of Supply And Demand can apply to snowdrops.  I've also heard it said that there are about 100 hard-core snowdrop enthusiasts in the UK and a similar number in Europe so potentially that's 200 people competing to pay £100 per bulb for 'Midas'?

I was extremely pleased to get my order this morning, one bulb I had been trying to find for years and 'Midas' with two noses and a side bulb.  Extraordinary what simple things bring joy to ones life ;D

... one bulb I had been trying to find for years ...

Now you have got me all curious as to the identity of that one.  I personally get a lot of satisfaction in tracking-down a hard-to-find bulb or plant.
