Goteberg - any Swedish speakers here?
« on: September 23, 2015, 11:48:15 AM »
hi, I've just recieved a message from Goteborg Botanical Garden about the demise of their Connoisseur Club. I asked on this forum about Shortia seed and was directed there by members, I bought seed and have some nice seedlings. I was thinking of doing the same if they had some different ones this year.

I can't quite follow whether it's still possible to buy seed from them. The e-mail suggests you can but I can't find the Botanic Shop mentioned and I wonder if that means you can't get anything online, only by going there.

Dear friends of the connoisseur Club,

We have decided not to sell the seeds via the connoisseur club anymore because, unfortunately, the demand has decreased in recent years. Furthermore, new EU rules on how the plant material may be used, a larger administrative work. You will still be able to buy some seeds collected in the garden of Botany store.

We naturally think that this is boring and to all our loyal customers, we would like to extend a warm thank you and hope to see you in the Botanical Garden.
Want to get access to an exclusive range of bulbs and tubers, we recommend you to join our Friends of the Friends of Botany. Every year you can order bulbs as a member selected by the Botanical Curator Henrik Zetterlund

Mark, I digress - but the important thing for me in your request was the confirmation that you have successfully produced seedlings from Shortia seed!!!  Would you please be so kind as to describe your methods to one who has failed so dismally and so often?  Many thanks in anticipation.

You can only buy the seed from the shop at the garden now.  To order bulbs you need to become a friend of the garden £13.50 approx

beyond that point not sure

but the range of bulbs you can get is not much

Cliff, actually I got a really good germination, I got S. soldanelloides and uniflora  - sometimes I'm suspicious with good germination but they do look like tiny Shortias - down to the red flushing of the leaves in the past few weeks. But the winter is to come...

I've treated them the same as Ramonda seeds - the Shortias have actually grown a bit quicker. So plastic pots, I bought some sedge peat and mixed it with sand. I sowed onto the surface, no coverage. I put the pots in an unheated and shaded covered propagator in the greenhouse and watered using rain water from a spray gun as a fine mist.  That's it. I'm probably not going to risk potting them up and they'll remain under cover until they are alot bigger than they are now. Again this is the same routine I've used with Ramondas.

Many thanks, Mark … you have used a very similar method to me … perhaps viability is more of an issue than I supposed it to be?

Cliff, I think I've read that they have only a short life - however I've just checked and seen that I placed my order for seeds in January - so in theory sources like AGS / SRGC seed would be equally viable. I nfact I only bought the seed from there after making a complete hash of my AGS seed order and sending it in very late.
