Title: Plant name
Post by: Elly on January 14, 2013, 01:22:18 PM
Hi, I am Elly, and I live in Bergen, Norway. As I am a new member, so this is my first post at the site.  Anybody who knows the name of this Delphinium?  This year I planned to take seeds, but none were developed. It is approx. 70-80 cm tall.

Hello Elly, welcome to the Forum.
Your plant is Delphinium x ruysii Pink Sensation. In trade since 1935! and originated in the Dutch Moerheim nursery.
I have never seen seed setting myself here in Holland but I have seen once some seedlings of this plant  at a nursery in the southern part of Germany. Obviously it needs higher temps to set seed.
They were mostly blueish and looked like species from N. America. Don't think they still exist.. :-\

Hello Lvandelft
Thanks so very, very much! I have searched the web, but could not find it. I will have to try to take cuttings, to see if I can get some more. I have many Delphiniums, but this sweet one is my favorite with the top flower doing a great advertising job.

Welcome to the Forum, Elly!
I'm not surprised that Luit has recognised your plant - we call him  "Master" for a reason!

I really like the colour of your Delphinium  - a strong but yet subtle pink.
I would think that there must be conditions where a plant like that would set seed- it  seems to have all the correct parts for seed....

Hi Maggi, thank you. I am pleased to be here. And I was happy to get help with the name. The color is so subtle, mild and gentle, still distinguised. I love it when it blends in with different pink, red colours. Had to enclose another picture to show  :) I think first thing when it starts growing in the spring will be taking cuttings. According to Carol Klein (Grow your own garden) Delphiniums are suited for cuttings. I have not tried before. All the other Delphiniums give plenty of seeds.

I should be paying more attention : Elly was not just a new member  on January 14th - she was the 2000th SRGC forumist!

Congratulations Elly! Very appropriate that the   2000th member should be a flower fairy - as your avatar clearly shows to you be!

Welcome Elly. I have grown delphiniums from cuttings in the past. It is quite easy if you take basal cuttings early in the season when the new shoots are first emerging - I root them in a pot of free-draining compost on a not-too-sunny windowsill. I haven't tried the red-flowered ones though and I think they may be trickier than the blues.

Gail, thank you.  I will difinitely be ready for it as soon as it shows some good shoots. I have other Delphiniums as well, in different blue shades and white, so I will give them all a try. I have been so focused on seeds, and taking cuttings will be an interesting challenge I am looking forward to.
