Title: Bulb Log 46 - Nov 14
Post by: art600 on November 19, 2007, 07:48:40 PM
Am I alone in thinking that the Narcissus serotinus bud does not look like a serotinus bud.  When mine flowered weeks ago, there were no leaves and the flower emerged from the 'stem'.
I shall be watching this bud with interest.

Does anyone else have the problem of N. serotinus bulbs going dormant for a year - like some Cyclamen.  they still appear OK after a year and I hope they will recommence growth.  Any thoughts

First question:  Yes, that's exactly what I thought

Second question: Yes, I had the same problem . Also with other daffodil species.

I'm with Arthur and Gerd - it looks like a Narcissus of the bulbocodium group ... an early romieuxii or cantabricus type.  N serotinus has fewer or no leaves.

My N serotinus are very poor in the flower department this year, due I think to the miserable, cool summer.  I have never had a whole potful go missing for a year.  Perhaps these plants need the right trigger at the start of the growing season, if it is absent (or too late) they might well remain dormant for that season.  Temperature drop / watering are the obvious factors but it may be that the right combination of both is necessary.

There is a Narcissus bulbocodium serotinus but I find it is firtually the last of the bulbocodoiums to flower for me, not the first.  It could be an out of season flowering of this though, that someone has named the seed as N. serotinus instead of N. bulbocodium serotinus?

Paul
Do you have a picture of N. bulbocodium serotinus.  I have never heard of this.  Poor Ian if he hoped for N. serotinus.

I'll see if I have a pic.  It is (well what I have under that name anyway) a strong yellow, very floriferous, and almost always last to flower in the bulbocodium/romieuxii alliance for me each year.  I figure I probably have a pic, but can't guarantee it.  Will get back to you.

Unfortunately, it looks like I don't have a picture.  I obviously haven't re-photographed it since I lost my hard drive and all my pics 2 years ago.  Can't find anything much on google either, just a reference to it in an AGS publication.  Sorry.

OHH Guys don't tell me that.
I did hope for a first time flower on N serotinus.
It is possible that a stray seed has shed into the seed pot since 2004 and what I am nurturing is a stray and not N.serotinus at all.
Thanks to you all for your input - the facts are always best even if they are sometimes disappointing.
I will keep you updated with the progress of the bud and of course the other pots of N. serotinus seedlings.

Ian

Any movement on the Narcissus 'serotinus' bud?

Although I'm not Arthur   ;) I am also very much interested in what appeared.

I had not forgotten, I want to show a picture and I have not been able to get one due to our terrible dark conditions. I will reveal all next week - promise.
