My first Juno but hopefully not the last of the season I nicolai
-
Superb plant Ian, not a species I can grow here.
Here actually in flower are Iris planifolia and Iris persica.
-
Lovely persicas Hans in such a natural environment
-
Hans , you always grow such beautiful healthy Irises , in particular the grayish (stormcloud ) persica is delectable .
-
Beautifully your Junos. My still need some time to flowering. I hope I can then show some beauties.
This is my first entry in this forum. But I read a few years by occasionally. Best wishes to all here. Some users I know already.

Very nice Iris fosteriana Hans. I had it in flower last year so very likely not this year.
This Iris persica is a very pale one isn't it ? Do you have other colour varieties ?

Hmmm, Hans, I think you now have a Belgian Fan Club... ;D ;)

GREAT! ;D ;)

Iris fosteriana was grown from Archibaldseed - so maybe your is relative of mine. ;)
Yes, I grow different coloursof Iris persica - here some older pictures: http://balearicgarden.es/iris/scorpiris/ (http://balearicgarden.es/iris/scorpiris/)

It's from the same source indeed. My big bulb split up after flowering last year and I think the babies will be too small to flower.

Lovely plants again Hans. Love the junos on your website particularly the persicas :)
-
Lovely website Hans. Did you set it up yourself? If so was it hard for a novice?
-
Thanks a lot Pat and Ian! :)
As I used a model of a provider it is easy, but time is missing to complete it.
Luc, maybe you have luck - here every year are some flowers - this year it is specially lovely.
So some more pics of Iris fosteriana and two more (wet ::)) Iris persicas.
-
Love them all. :) :)
-
Thanks Pat!
Today a darker form blooms. :)
-
That is a lovely shade too Hans
-
Thanks Pat!
Iris stenophylla ssp. allisonii is flowering.
-
I have the same species in flower now, but the colouring of the lip is much darker Hans.
Does anyone know if the plants are that variable ?
Tony Hall confirmed that this is the real iris stenophylla s.s. from the Taurus.
-
Luc, Hans wonderful plants.
My Junos are not nearly as advanced.
-

Luc and Alex great plants, thanks for sharing them - Luc this is by far my palest "allisonii", but doubt to grow any such dark as yours in this ssp. - here a pic of last year: http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8346.msg237229#msg237229 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8346.msg237229#msg237229)

Iris rosenbachiana "Tovil-Dara" called after the town where this colourform was found.
-
I wasn't going to comment on Junos this season as I no longer grow them and I do miss them a bit, but I'll make an exception for your Iris rosenbachia 'Tovil-Dara' Luc. Absolutely beautiful.
-
They are doing well David, picks when flowers open. :)
-
Glad to hear they are OK Michael

Rosenbachiana "Varzob"
-
These are the real colors Juno nicolai Varzob
The soil must have a specific composition

Jan, your Junos are great! Is Iris nicolai 'Varzob' the same plant like Iris rosenbachiana 'Varzob'? What distinguishes Iris nicolai and Iris rosenbachiana?

Juno rosenbachiana Varzob only commercial name.
Flora Tadjikistan clearly separates from Juno nicolai and Juno rosenbachiana.
There are botanical differences. But in a real kind. They are very variable species, like Juno maracandica and Juno narbuti. Colors
individual species you will see in the Gallery on my website.
Excuse me my English

Juno nicolai this morning

Some of my favourites amonghst all my bulbs, the beautifull iris rosenbachiana, below is one referred to as "form 1", very closely related to rosenbachiana darwas strain, and secondly is rosenbachiana Tovil Dara, or Tovil Dora ( i have seen both spellings used, so I am not sure which name applies to the plant, but it is from near the town of Tovil dora in south eastern Tajikistan)
like most spring bulbs they started flowering 2-3 weeks later than usual here. the last flower on rosenbachiana form 1 is still in bloom, and as they generally produce several flowers per bulb, it has now been in flower for 5 weeks, with their excellent perfume!
Interesting to see iris nicolai under snow. I have read that it is slightly tender, and sometimes flowers in january, but as the puicture shows, it doesent seem to mind the cold and snow?

Very beautiful plants Pontus
My plants have hard conditions as in Uzbekistan ;D ;D ;D
-
Thank you Jan,
yes they seem to enjoy Switzerland. They are also enjoying their new spot in my Afghanistan/Tajikistan bed, with differet gravels, stones, rocks and fairly poor clayish soil, only with some humus, I tried to recreate their native conditions...
ps
I tried to open your website to try and view your junos and images, but I could not acess it. Do you have another link? Do you also have a nursery? if so, what is your website link?
Pontus
-
Pontus, the link by Jan functions with me without problems.
The rosenbachiana-forms have withered with me already. Later than usual blooms this year Iris kuschakewiczii.
-
Wonderful pot, Ebbie !

Thanks ashley.
-
With me only Iris rosenbackiana is blooming. On attached picture Iris rosenbackiana TOVILJ Dara.
-
I find the slender yellow-green Iris tubergeniana is somehow an elegant appearance.
-
Iris graeberiana
It didn't do much for a year or two but two flowering bulbs this year and the flowers are lasting a long time with the cool weather
-
Iris magnifica 'Agalik' growing in the open garden today - very reliable.
-
Two Iris orchioides. I think, particularly ZZ216 is a very spectacular form. The other may be Khirghizian Gold of Janis Ruksans? Could anyone confirm the ID ?
-
Hi,
can anyone ID this plant as magnifica alba? It's another lost label.
After torturing it in a pot for several years I planted it out in the garden and it seem very happy,
even after last year's crappy weather.
Growth is far better in the soil than I could manage in a pot.
It grows on a dry south facing slope. There is graeberiana in the background.
Thanks,
David

Correct. Grow better outside!

"Tiefgelb" could be Khirghizian Gold
ZZ216 looks close to Urungachsai, but can't see details.
-
Thank you Janis. Next year I will try to make a better photo.
-
Greenhouse with Juno and Tulips in full bloom.
On separate pictures
Iris albomarginata - true from locus classicus
Iris vicaria - best form with very large flowers. It s seedling and may be hybrid. I not remember collecting so beautiful form in wild.
More pictures on my home page

Iris cycloglossa is the latest Juno of the season, this year with a fantastic show, 26 bloom open today. When I started growing this species, I was told I'd get likely a failure, seeing this species is not well suited to hot Mediterranean climate and indeed at first it grew poorly. Once I understood its needs, I moved to a more suitable spot, half shaded especially at the base of the plant and it received ample waterings during growth, also in summer the place is not too dry. In a couple of years it has multiplied very well. Sorry for the bad quality of the photo, it was almost dark when I arrived in my orchard, but I am happy to show. BTW, this species is nicely scented. Janis, I wonder why any of you Juno bredeers haven't used this species yet, I think cycloglossa x magnifica could be a nice hybrid. Maybe they are not compatible?
-
Some more juno irises
Extremely rare I. hymenospatha leptoneura grown up from few seeds collected in Iran. This is first blooming.
Iris linifolia from Tadjikistan
Iris tadschicorum aff - although quite different, by opinion of Tony Hall - form of parvula
Iri8s tubergeniana collected near Taschkent, Uzbekistan
Iris kuschakewiczii from Kazahstan
-
Last this season is Iris kopetdaghensis
-
This is the first of the Juno Iris planifolia to flower in the ground here but I know Pat Toolan in South Aust has had it in flower since last month if not longer!
The one in a pot finished a couple of weeks ago, so no chance to cross pollinate!
cheers
fermi
-
Yes I have lots of flowers on the Iris planifolia clump but I am waiting on Trevor N and Marcus H coming tomorrow to tell me if I have virus through the patch. I have quite a few without the yellow stripe this year.
-
Iris aucheri ex Leylek Station - had no idea this was so close to flowering until I spied it yesterday morning.
And Iris xSindpers after rain
-
Pat,
I had the same one flower for the first time this weekend!
Grown from NARGS Seedex 2005 (KPPZ 90158) sown 19-06-05
cheers
fermi
-
My plant is onto its second flower now Fermi. Is yours a lighter blue
-
Hi Pat,
Mine appears a lighter blue, though I don't have a clour chart to be able to give it an objective value!
The seed was donated to the NARGS Seedex by Otto's friend Erich Pasche! But I'm not sure if it was wild collected or second generation from the garden. My records are a bit sketchy about that sort of detail! :o
Is this one self fertile? Or do we need to swap pollen? ;D
cheers
fermi
-
I will see if I have any pollen after all this rain lately and post it on if there is.
-
Very nice juno's Fermi and Pat ! Stil remarkable ....we are replant the dry bulbs for the moment while you enjoy the flowering ones . But thanks to share . Love especially the dark one ....
-
The first flower on Juno Iris hippolytti,
sown 2008; Otto is impressed that it only took 5 years to get a b loom ;D
I think it was planted out into this bed in December 2010;
cheers
fermi
-
Sorry to disappoint you Fermi -but I may be wrong - to me it looks like the much easier and common I . vicaria .
-
What was the source of the seed Fermi?
-
What was the source of the seed Fermi?
Impeccable ;D
It doesn't look like pics of I. vicaria on the SIGNA database and it does have the distinctive wing on the side of the fall that Peter Taggart mentions on the entry on the SIGNA site.
It may be a bit elongated as it was overgrown by rampant Californian Poppies!
cheers
fermi
-
Hmmmm, I've just had a look at Peter T's Flickr pic of it and it is quite different!http://www.flickr.com/photos/66380714@N06/6145485210/#in/photostream/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/66380714@N06/6145485210/#in/photostream/)
Maybe a hybrid??? Or just a very poor form?
You can ask the supplier when you see him, Otto,
cheers
fermi

To my surprise the first flower on a juno in (for us) the new season.
This form of iris planifolia is from Tunesia.
Iris planifolia var. micrantha SL301
[attach=1] [attach=2] [attach=3]
-
Short stem, large flower - how pretty it is.
-
Wow Luc, this is early! Went in the garden with my maglite to check my plants of this species (what differences exist between species and ssp.micrantha?), but nothing to see.
My neighbours may think this crazy guy is looking for snails again which are not out because of the drought - still not learning after all the years he lives here... :P ;D
-
Great Luc ! Here too it should bloom within the next few days...
What is this ssp ?

var. micrantha is in fact a form with shorter leaves than the Spanish plants but with more or less the same size of flowers. And the plant comes from the other side of the Mediterranean.
This variety is now included in iris planifolia I think.
-
Great Luc ! Here too it should bloom within the next few days...
What is this ssp ?
My plants with Spanish roots are only 4 cm high at the moment. Strange why this one is so early.

Flowering now since end of october, from spain
Iris planifolia
(edit by maggi to add plant name for search facility. )

Very nice plant Fred , neat ,compact and very wel grown !
Here some leaves on this juno already .....Normally this should be narbutii , isn't it to early ?
