Hello.
C.sativus in December is probably a bit unusual (probably planted a little late). Unfortunately somewhat thin flowers.
In C.speciosus `Albus` even come until small peaks.
The plants (C.sativus, speciosus) are cool in the stairwell.
Outside suddenly are more than 30cm snow!

Another one with black anthers was flowering today ....Crocus hyemalis .
-
Kris,
That is very nice to see C. hyemalis ans C. wattiorum from Belgium! Both are very sensitive for hardy winter conditions!!
Here is my first sipring crocus from last week. It always flowers this time of year in my conditions.

A very good form with very nice anthers Ibrahim . Such species flower here at the beginning of january. I think I lost mine due the bad winter of 2011/2012 ...And even they where not so attractive as yours it is stil sad.
Like al the species with the black anthers ...

nice images! 8) warms my heart and magnifying my longing for spring and warmer temperatures ;D

Here started real winter and next week is offered temperature dropping to minus 23 C. Garden is covered by snow, so only problem can be from rodents because soil still is not frozen. In greenhouse still few crocuses are blooming - generally laevigatus, melantherus, boryi and some others. This spring I collected some interesting pallasii. Few days ago I was pleasantly surprised seeing one bud coming up and for coming frost I carefully took it out and forced to bloom on my bathrooms window-sill. Quite nice although very late blooming. Some features are very special.
Janis
Edit by Maggi :
This crocus now identified as new species, described by Janis as C. macedonicus 2013
-
A couple from today, C. biflorus melantherus (ex Peter Moore) and C. wattiorum from Tony Willis.
Alex
-
Alex, nice Crocus wattiorum and so late! :o
When give you the first water?
After two cold weeks with minimum temperature -14°C here full in flower:
Crocus hyemalis from Israel
-
For me Crocus season finished. Today covered my greenhouse beds for winter. Sti8ll C.melantherus, laevigatus, caspius and few others had flowers, but temperature for more than week are around minus 5 C and for coming nights is offered dropping gradually to minus 15 and even minus 25 C next week.

My single specimen of this form from Lebanon was killed last winter by extreme frost - down to minus 30 for 3 weeks.

Thanks,
Kris,
Glad i can help.... well, at least you have a good chocolate ;)
Janis,
In fact these colonies come from low altitudes and probably not very hardy,
the fact that they grow leaves at flowering time and develop seedpods soon after indicate that they don't stay under the snow, well at least not more then a few days during winter.

A couple of very late flowering Crocus today.
In spite of the very heavy rain this Crocus speciosus seems ok in the shelter of a beech tree.
I brought a pot of Crocus biflorus ssp melantherus in from a cold frame to watch the flowers open in the warmth. (still playing with different colour backgrounds!)
-
Dear Croconuts,
I wish you Merry Christmas and all the best in coming New Year! Growing of crocuses is not easy but not the heaviest job!
Yours
Janis

Very nice form Melvyn .I like the outside of the flowers .
Here nothing happens for the moment in the pots with my Crocus .....Many have a little nose above the soil , but that's just it .

Many thanks Luc and Kris, glad you like them.

Crocus pelistericus in flower today
Beautiful.

I concur the notes from Martin and Ron.
A teriffic crocus. 8)
Tony, what do you think has caused the early flower this season?
-
Armin
I really cannot tell why it has flowered at this time but from my records as i said in my posting it has flowered over a long period in the past but the most flowers appear usually in March. In the wild of course in early may.
The rest of my plants of this species are just coming through the top dressing.
-
I still have a couple of Crocus pulchellus buds in the garden. No hope of them ever opening. It starts flowering about mid September and just keeps going.

Truly gorgeous, Tony !
-
Great to see these Crocus flowers - it fairly cheers me up in the darkness
The ones we have with flowers, mostly Crocus laevigatus, are not encouraged to open in the low light cold conditions we are currently experiencing - the buds give up after two or three weeks waiting for some warmth and wither with out ever opening .
Nice to see Crocus pelistericus flowering this early - by coincidence I was just sorting through my picture files and was viewing this picture taken on 4th April - something to look forward to.

Very deep colour Tony. Is it possible that this is due to flowering early i.e. not much light around. Mine (from you Thanks) flowered in February last year and are not above ground yet

Very lovely plants Ashley ! Among my favorites , so never mind about the pictures. They are early to , here they are stil not above the soil ....I hope to enjoy two times .... now with your pictures and later with my own plants....
-
Thanks Kris. Yes they're a bit earlier than usual because the weather here has been mild for several weeks now.
The main problem is low light levels. For example Romulea tempskyana flowers waited 3 weeks for enough sunshine and warmth, and are now going over without having opened at all.

Excellent! Are they blooming now?
Janis

They are Janis, unusually early even here.
When they began to emerge several weeks ago I brought them under glass for protection from slugs and weather. However for pollination they may need to come into the warmth of the house.

Ashley, nice to see Crocus 'Rainbow Gold' in this time.
I remember me, the first flower from this hybrid was in flower on 1. April 2006, after a long winter.
I wish all members from this forum a happy new year. :D
