The snowdrop company brochure has just dropped through the letter.
I shall resist! I shall resist.....
-
only the first ten seconds ;D
-
How's the resistance coming along? I had mine yesterday, and I sent off a small order last night... However, that hasn't stopped me going over the catalogue again today and wishing I'd ordered more! :-[
-
Not had my copy. Probably just as well.
-
Anything desirable on it?
-
Well... from my perspective yes (although a couple I'm after weren't listed) because my growing collection of snowdrops is likely to be rather modest compared to yours Mark... I can't imagine there are many you wouldn't have already. Carolyn Elwes is on it...
-
could you photograph it or scan it for me?
My collection is small.
-
Carolyn Elwes is on it...
She must be safely back on her feet again.
johnw
-
Ahh... yes, I have fat fingers.. luckily I can get away with this mistake as she (the snowdrop) is on the cover... ;)
-
could you photograph it or scan it for me?
Me too! I need a good cry.
johnw
-
And if anyone would care to send me a scan also, it would be appreciated
-
Mark, what is a "small" collection?
I would have a scan too, if possible!!!!!!!!
Uli
-
Thanks to JF I have RM's catalogue and hankerchief in hand now. Saved £385 + shipping in the first minute.
Meanwhile we await an order from Colesbourne.....
johnw
-
Thanks to John also :D
-
Mark, what is a "small" collection?
Nowhere near what people seem to think it is. I havent bought specials in many years and have just concentrated on buying to bulk up what I have. There are many I would buy but hate when tiny non flowering twinscales are supplied. I buy mainly from two suppliers these days.
-
I buy mainly from two suppliers these days.
So who gets the Mark Smyth seal of approval?
-
I have yet to get any catalogues through, which can only be a good thing .
-
Alan one is Avon Bulbs. You can be guaranteed that any bulb sent by them, while dormant, will be flowering size and they sell pot grown plants.
-
Im being good and resisting , then that will go out the window if i get my christmas bonus !
-
I agree Mark, I've always had very good snowdrops from Alan Street at Avon Bulbs.
Can we know who the other seller is?
Lucky you Emma getting a Christmas bonus! 8)
-
I'm guessing Wol
-
Aw thank you Mark for those kind words. We always do our best! Work has started on the 2013 catalogue, it should be ready (in the post and online) from the beginning of January. We have such lovely customers too x
-

And some in Canada begging to join the ranks.....

-
Hi DingDong.....I'm looking forward to seeing the 2013 catalogue!
-
are there any good galanthus from the gold group on the list? I am looking for a few to increase my small galanthus collection.
So far, I have only managed to get hold of 3 wendy's gold that i am looking forward to see pop through the ground next year :)
Pontus
-
Avon are great because of the quality of their bulbs, daughter bulbs are not pried off and they do not supply tiny bulbs with single grass like leaves
-
Still waiting for the second nursery, Mark???
-
I agree with Mark. Avon does supply healthy big bulbs as does Ian Christie.
-
I recommend Dryad for the lovely bulbs that are supplied
-
Yep I agree with you about Dryad Mark... ;D
Ian Christie sent me great bulbs as has Mike Broadhurst.
Joe Sharman has sent me super bulbs too.
I hate it when you know you have been short changed by a supplier (one in particular) that strips bulbs of daughter bulbs & then sends out as Mark says non flowering sized bulbs with a grass like leaf. If you write to say how disappointed you are with the bulb/s sent he totally ignores you. I would never order from him again..so there. >:(
-

Mark
Dryad Nursery was new to me so I googled it. Would someone kindly hit me with a mallet? ::) Now it's not quite so annew.
johnw
-
Ah - I wasn't really fishing, I just wondered….
-
I agree with the comments about Avon bulbs, good sized bulbs and a very friendly, helpful service.
As also mentioned, Wol and Sue Staines supply very good bulbs. I've also been impressed with bulbs supplied by Ian Christie....another one I can recommend. I've had a few disappointments from other suppliers, either small bulbs provided or they're not true to name which is a little frustrating to say the least.
I haven't used Dryad Nursery but certainly shall do now :)

Pontus
Pontus, you might want to check Ian Christie's woronowii 'Elisabeth Harrison'. He has some other good and nice yellows too, if Elisabeth is a bit too demanding on your budget :-\ .
-
I can recommend Ian Christie as well.

Harveys list is out today, attached.

Gary - to me one of the key questions would be "which of these is likely to thrive in my garden/soil?", always a difficult question to answer unless you have seen the variety growing in a local garden.
Of your list I only have Diggory and Robin Hood. Diggory was new to me last year and has appeared with three strong noses this year, I think it is a great flower and therefore would recommend it.
Robin Hood was given to me a couple of years ago and has not flowered or increased well - I will try it in a different spot next year. The forumist that gave it to me said that for him it had a weak stem and tended to flop. So I would hesitate to recommend this one.
My garden has a heavy clay soil but gets very dry in the summer.
Please let us all know which ones you decide on.
Chris
-
I would definitely have Sutton Courtenay, everyone who sees it here wants it :)
Trymming is a good one too and seems to increase well.
-
Thanks for the responses so far. Yes Mark, I have read that Primrose Warburg and Spindelestone Surprise are almost indistinguishable. Is it correct that Spindlestone is supposed to be the most vigorous?
Chris I have planted around 70 varieties of Galanthus during the last three years and seem to have had a good success rate, perhaps losing around 3-4 at most, so most seem to do well in my variable soil. I try to plant in the well drained areas. Some are very slow e.g Three Ships one flower to two flowers in 3 years. Most are increasing at a faster rate and at the other end of the scale is Wasp increasing from one to 8 or more in the same period.
Brian, Sutton Courtenay and Trymming are near the top of my list but it all depends on the availability when I order on 3rd January.
-
That's a good success rate Gary, sounds like Wasp is one to try here.
Does anybody grow Honeysuckle Cottage? I feel I should try that one as that's the name of this house.
Chris
-
I have Honeysuckle Cottage. http://www.snowdropinfo.com/galanthus%20epiphany.html (http://www.snowdropinfo.com/galanthus%20epiphany.html) Labelled as Epiphany because thats what it was supplied as. I must change it later.

I'm chuckling away here at what you have written, Chris, as Mary ordered this snowdrop from Avon Bulbs last year purely on the strength of its name. It just shows the importance of choosing an attractive name for a plant and how it will promote sales.

I'm stoopid. That link is Ephinany. Doh. I'll look up Honeysuckle Cottage later after work or if anyone else has a photo please post it while I'm selling loads of alcohol today. On Christmas eve one person bought £1000 of the stuff!
-
Imagine how many snowdrops we would have bought!
Lina.

Depending on the variety Lina - anywhere between 2 and 1000 :D

Honeysuckle Cottage
-
Thanks Mark - looks a bit like Magnet with an even longer pedicel?
Chris
-
Primrose Warburg is a good grower so far for me--one plant last year and three coming up right now---different climate though.
Is there a link to the Avon catalogue? I couldn't find it on their website. I would love a scan of it if it's not too long for that.
Happy New Year,
Carolyn
-
Carolyn I think their web site will list snowdrops tomorrow

Thanks, Mark. You are right, it's there. Nice to have virtual friends with all the info. Happy New Year. Carolyn

Hello All
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all....
Well, Avon online catalogue was there yesterday and I made my first online order successfully.....I hope. Today I notice it is gone again.....was I imagining things? Maybe Ding Dong can fill us in? ???
-
Slight computer glitches after Christmas yesterday!!!! And lots of orders received in the post. Hopefully the website should be up and running properly later today!!! Happy New Year everyone x
-
Made my order to Avon this morning by phone. Finally went for;
Diggory
Trymming
Sutton Courtenay
Cowhouse Green
-
North Green catalogue just arrived. In it he mentions Maidwell C and Enid Bromley saying Enid is a better version of Maidwell C. As I said last year I have both. I'll have to email Matt to find out how they differ. I would just say that in my garden Enid is the better plant. I had intended to move it last year to a position where I could take better photos in good light ... but snowdrops finish and other interests take hold ::)
-
North Green's also arrived here today...........................hmmmmmmmmmmmm
-
I had a nice empty envelope :-X
-
One of the charms of North Green Snowdrops is the way in which certain varieties which were discovered at NGS will appear in the catalogue, then disappear for three, four, maybe five years, then magically reappear. Its a bit like that poem The Land of Beyond ( www.poetryloverspage.com/poets/service/land_of_beyond.html (http://www.poetryloverspage.com/poets/service/land_of_beyond.html)). This year, for example, Savill Gold is back. Now there's a snowdrop that is a challenge to cultivate!
I went down to the Sacred Store, a.k.a. the Avon Bulbs website, which confidently asserts "They will clump up in time". Wow!! With faith like that, the writer should be Archbishop of Canterbury! However, five years ago the Avon stand at the February RHS Show had a display of ...Longnor Hall - a super double!(Ding Dong won't mind this story - I drive him crazy asking after it.) Longnor Hall double inhabits the Land of Beyond. "In time" is a very long time. Will I live to see it? Doubtful - I haven't even passed the Burning Bush yet. Heigh-ho.
Thick snow and minus 2 outside - must be time for snowdrop crackpots to assemble for the Midwinter Ice ritual at Myddleton House. See you there.
-
Foxgrove's 2013 list is on their website. :o :o :

Not for another week Steve....don't turn up tomorrow!
I got the North Green catalogue out of the blue this year - never got one last year. Has anyone ever seen a photo or even better the plant 'Long Wasp'?
Brian - do you need a scan of the list as I could try to scan it and send it to you?
I tried in 3 shops today to get the Country Life magazine to no avail. If anyone scans it could I have a copy please?
-

Do you mean the March issue, Jennie? Couldn't find it here yet either.
-
If any forumist could supply a scanned copy of the "North Green Snowdrop" catalogue to me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Mostly for dreaming!
Also, are the galanthus article(s) in Country Life, Country Living, or both? What exact dates and issues, please? We have a magazine store in Seattle that gets both from the UK but I have to tell them the exact title and issue for them to save me a copy.
It's been in the mid 20sF every night here for over 12 days now, with no snow, of course. All my plants are in the garage until the freeze passes - maybe by next Tuesday.
Thanks,
Jim
-

Not sure which month it is Maggie ??? Ding Dong mentioned an article on yellow snowdrops in Country Life - not sure if it would be Feb or March?
-
Hi Jim
I have the "Country Living" magazine from February 2013 - this has a 5 page article on Matt's snowdrop day (various forum members can be spotted in pictures - most obvious to me are Mark and Emma ;D )
Ding Dong mentioned about an article on yellow snowdrops, that I have not seen, but I guess it should be in the January 2013 issue of "Country Life" magazine by the sounds of it:
Also meant to say, there is a good article on yellow snowdrops in this weeks Country Life magazine! It's by Mark Griffiths
-
Well, had a look in our local newsagents for it, and apparently it is a weekly magazine ,so we would need to know which week the article was in
-
Jennie & Maggie - the article was in Country Life magazine, which is weekly - it was in the issue dated 9th January (had a picture of 2 Irish Terriers on the front). As it is published weekly, that issue would have been taken off sale now. I will take it to work on Monday and (hopefully) get someone to scan it for me!!! Watch this space :) ;)

Yes, please do, fingers crossed 8)

Thanks Maxine, both for the clarification and the hope of a scan.
Very confusing for us simple folks to have such similarly named mags, one monthly and one weekly - too much information for a semi-frozen brain to handle.

Ditto. :D
(I would love to read it too if anyone does manage a scan ;D )
-
From what I remember you can order back issues so might try that
-
And if someone could send the scan to my adress too?
Then I would have a happy weekend.
It seems our winter will be colder.
Bullfinch and waxbill arrived here today.

Bullfinch and waxbill arrived here today.
Galanthus Greenfinch is lovely - My mind is picturing how robust 'Galanthus Bullfinch' could look. :D lol
John FINCH
-
Bullfinch.........must be red ......................wow
-
Sorry, I forgot to say, I spoke about birds only ;D
-
Yes Hagen,just us being silly ;D ;D
-
In case anyone is interested I have scanned the article from COUNTRY LIVING about the Garden House. I am not an expert scanner but it is readable and up the right way! If anyone wants me to mail them a copy please PM me with an email address.
Thick snow & icy roads today down my country lane - not worth going out of the door except to feed the birds. I always resort to baking in this sort of weather and am now going to make a start on one of my favourites - Delia Smith's Ultimate Carrot Cake with Mascarpone & Fromage Frais topping and infused with an orange & lemon syrup - yum :)
-
I am not an expert scanner but it is readable and up the right way!
In my book that is expert enough! The birds are getting through a feeder and a half of sunflower hearts and three quarters of a feeder of peanuts a day here so whatever else they get their breakfast after us or I would feel guilty. Send us a slice of cake it sounds lovely :-*
-
Anything unusual in your garden, Brian
-
Anything unusual in your garden, Brian
Yes, snow.
Nothing in the way of unusual birds, just the normal tits, goldfinches by the dozen, robins, doves and pigeons, the woodpeckers seem to have disappeared, I thought they would have been on the peanuts.
-
I have scanned the Country Life 4 page article on yellow snowdrops. If anyone would like a copy please PM me with an email address.
It's about 2.4M in size. I can send in two emails if one would be too big. Please let me know.
After just over two weeks of freezing nights and barely thawing days, we may have temperatures above freezing tuesday. Seems we are all sharing the cold in the Northern hemisphere.
Jim
Edit by maggi: Jim has kindly sent me the files and I have combined them into one at 1.2 MB file
-
Many thanks for sending the scan Jim (and also Jennie).
Much needed reading on delayed UK train journeys at the moment.
-
Thanks Jim!
I've made a smaller file and sent it to Jim so a single 1.2Mb file can be sent ;)
-
Has everyone noticed that Matt Bishop is now selling on ebay? Only two snowdrops so far but I am sure he has many more up his sleeve that will go for ridiculous ebay prices......
-
Can I read it please?
edit by maggi - will email it ,Mark

I saw this yesterday evening and was a bit shocked. I though the snowdrop boys were against selling snowdrops on Ebay and didnt agree with what Joe was doing.
Have I made a label mistake? I have a Fly Fishing and a Gone Fishing ::)

Look closely at the, Mark. .... if either look a bit like a little Scotsman, you've probably got the VERY RARE Fred Admin ;)

On Ebay: G. 'Green Tear' sold for 430 English pounds (513 Euro) !
-
and I expect they still had to pay postage!
-
Haha. I would wait and buy another in order to save on the combined postage!
-
I bought 'ROSIE' from the same seller. It came in superb condition, packed with care and a double flowered bulb.I would love to get 'GREEN TEAR' but i have to eat. Please tell me where to buy hen's teeth?E-bay, perhaps. ;D ;D ;D
-
Acorn cottage snowdrops catalogue arrived today.Jennie, it has got 'ROGER'S ROUGH' in it.Hope your lucky.I've also got 'long wasp'last year.It had three noses before the snow.I'll try and post pictures when it flower's.
-
Apologies for late ..Thank You ,Jim, computer has been down,we have swapped I.P. and think previous provider was being a little awkward
-
Steve - that should be 'Roger's Rough'; its named for Richard's Bird's garden at Kilndown, near Goudhurst in Kent. I don't think they are opening this year, but Richard knows Elizabeth Strangman well and has some really interesting snowdrops that have come from Washfield Nursery.
-
Thanks Tim.I've just changed my post. :-X :-X :-X
-
Has anybody seen G. 'Rowallane' listed in any of the catalogues?
If you spare a minute, please have a look for me as I don't have the catalogues.
G. 'Rowallane' arose in Rowallane Gardens in Northern Ireland but it no longer grows there. Averil Milligan, Head Gardener at Rowallane, would like to return it to the garden and I, with my interest in the conservation of Irish plants through the Irish Garden Plant Society, am also interested in ensuring its future at Rowallane.
Any information in tracking down this bulb would be greatly appreciated.
-
Who/where do I get the Acorn Cottage catalogue from please?
-
Sorry Paddy - I didn't reply to your last request as I have never seen it listed so had nothing positive to tell you.
-
That's fine, John. Many thanks. It's proving to be an elusive one.
That bergenia you mentioned is a good one, by the way - B. 'Overture', excellent winter colour, deep plum? We have it here in the garden - a bit by post?
-
Being but newly and barely at all initiated into the Lesser Arcana of the Galanthus world .. being thereby innocent of many things darkly hinted at in this particular corner of the forum ... can anyone explain to me why North Green 2013 catalogues are going around a tenner a shot on ebay? For the catalogue? Is someone having a laugh, or have I already inadvertently uttered the tetragrammaton without first invoking the Graces of the First Monolith? I did try sniping a couple at a quid or so purely for the chutzpah of it, but now realise that was laughably optimistic speculation. On the other hand, I did see someone get Mrs Macnamara for about a quid a week or two ago ...
As they used say in journalism, the only dumb question is an unasked question. But that was quite a long time ago.
-
Maybe Thompson and Morgan want one?
This article mentions the direct route by which a copy of the catalogue may be obtained http://www.a-gardening-woman.com/snowdrops/ (http://www.a-gardening-woman.com/snowdrops/) - at a cost of 6 first class stamps. But I presume this year's print run is sold out.
-
Thank you so much for the link for North Green catalogue - I know I am late to apply for this year as so many have tried to scramble a copy off Ebay - No idea how the seller has so many copies for sale at a huge profit. Hope you don't mind me jumping on the band wagon I am very new to this obsession (well thats what it is turning out to be in our house anyway). I know I have paid well over the odds on ebay for the drops I have got this year so any advice no matter how basic would be very very gratefully received. Thank you so much in advance

Oops sorry Colineddie, I meant the eBay seller of the catalogues. Hope your drops that you got from us do well, and you manage to keep the cats off them :) I have the same problem myself, we've also got 2 Jack Russell puppies who have taken a liking to pulling out plant labels and chewing them, I foresee muddle and confusion next year :) (my own garden I'm talking about, not Avon Bulbs)!
