Anyone know this one, found apparently abandoned by the side of the road?

Stephen,

Rosa multiflora I think?  It is one of those used as a rootstock for grafting, or at least it is here in Aus.

Stephen,

it is a bit like identification of crocus species. Difficult to judge just from photo. :)

It could be some form of mutliflora as Paul suggest but flowers look to large...

My best source is this:http://blumeninschwaben.de/Zweikeimblaettrige/Rosengewaechse/rosen.htm#Vielblütige Rose (http://blumeninschwaben.de/Zweikeimblaettrige/Rosengewaechse/rosen.htm#Vielblütige Rose)

Click on 'Unterarten' to see images of subspecies.

Maybe you find a match.

Armin,

Yes, I had wondered about the size a bit too.  It does look rather large in the photo.
