I've built a set of stone steps in my garden and would like to plant the space between the treads with something interesting. It's shady (South facing in the Southern hemisphere) and between blocks of limestone on all sides, with gravel fill at present. I thought rather than sweet violets or Campanula poscharskyana, (both obvious choices) I'd ask here incase someone could recommend a more interesting plant for the position.
Climate - Mediterranean, hot dry summers, cool wet winters, rarely frost
Position - South facing - a little sun in summer, zero in winter.
Soil - any - I can fill with whatever I chose.
Criteria - Obscure, reliable, flowers a plus.

How about some type of herb or other scented-leaved plant so you will enjoy
the smell as you walk on a bit of it.

That's true Diane. I guess pennyroyal would fit the bill quite nicely... many of them need more sun than this spot has to offer.

Have a look at Paronychia capitata or it's kin. I love the silver sheen and it would look glorious against the stone.

Another suggestion Thalictrum kiusianum will creep slowly along the through the steps. it flowers over a long time.
