Hi all ,
knows maybe anybody on which weekend in February and on which place are the Snowdrop Days with Joe Sharman ?
Thank you
Hans
-
Hans he is keeping very quiet
-
The CGS day is February 16th which normally means that Joe's Gala is on the 9th. As Mark says Joe is keeping his cards close to his chest until the lecture venue has been sorted.
-
Thank you Mark and Brian ,
I did not know that it is a secret :o
May be later ....
Hans
-
It's not that it's a secret Hans, but Joe has to book the schools for lectures, lunch etc and just when he is free to do so they are all on Summer holidays so it is not known until all the arrangements are in place. As we are always saying, it is a shame as, if you need to travel and find accommodation you miss early booking discounts!
-
;D ;D ;D
Thank you Brian !

Schneeglöckchentage 2013 in Nettetal
Schneeglöckchentage 2013 im Oirlicher Blumengarten Botanische Kostbarkeiten erleben
Nettetal.

Experience botanical treasures in the Oirlicher Flower Garden in Nettetal at the 2013 Snowdrop Day
The Snowdrop Days held in the North-Rhine Westphalia area of Nettetal have secured a firm place in the calendar for amateur gardeners. The first garden highlight of 2013, as in previous years, will be on the last weekend in February, in the Oirlicher Flower Garden and the grounds of the adjacent courtyard. There will be selected exhibitors from home and abroad, presenting botanical treasures - and, of course, Snowdrops. The collecting passion for the rich number of exceptional forms of these early flowers is central to this event. The presence of renowned snowdrop nurseries, in England, for example, have become a popular feature.
This established and successful event arose as the initiative of the late snodrop garden enthusiast and collector, Günter Waldorf, author of "Snowdrops- White Magic".
The Snowdrop Days are a must for botanical enthusiast, avid garden lovers and especially for snowdrop lovers.

The Collection at 127 Stoke Road, Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, Beds LU7 2SR will be having an Open Day on Saturday 23 February 2013, 11 am to 4 pm. No refreshments so bring a flask!
We will of course try to accommodate enthusiasts wishing to visit by alternative prior arrangement especially if they are RICH.
-
I am pleased to see that the speakers at the Gala are well worth the trip, and I look forward to meeting one of them especially. ;D

Snowdrop Days: A Midwinter Celebration at Chelsea Physic Garden 2013 ....
see here : : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9815.0 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9815.0) :D
-
And the speakers are ???????????????
-
Who are the speakers ? Do tell please :)
-
Speakers for Joe's Gala are Hagen Engelmann, Matt Bishop and Joe himself.
-
Oh that is excellent , it will be great to see Hagen again ;D
-
Hagen's talking about his collection under the title Galanthus Gems from Germany. Matt's talking about the greens, green tips, virescents etc, including the latest thinking on the mechanisms involved in how they come about. And Joe's talking about galanthus memorabilia.
Don't think I'll be able to make it.
-
I have relatives i shall be staying with in the area , so if i can get a ticket and weather permitting i shall be there (My Mum will also be wanting to go too ;D )
Having seen a talk by Joe about his galanthus memorabilia , there seems to be little he wont collect if it has a snowdrop on ::) It was a very funny talk !
-
I understand that invitations for the Gala are now being delivered - we are of course going out and won't get ours until tomorrow anyway ;D
-
Yay excellent ;D
-
Emma you are getting too excited, don't peak too early ;D ;D ;D
-
Just as I thought, no post today :-\
-
flights and car hire too expensive for me :'(
-
My Gala application form was waiting for me when I got home. Not too surprising as it only has to travel across Cambridge to reach me.
-
Emma you are getting too excited, don't peak too early ;D ;D ;D
I have a horrid cold, its grey , cold and damp outside , i need the excitement to keep my spirits up through the dark of winter ;D
-
:'( no gala letter for me today
-
No, me neither.
-
Nor me either >:(
-
The venue is: St. Felix School, Halesworth Road, Raydon, Suffolk IP18 6SD .
There are afternoon visits to Michael and Anne Broadhurst in Redisham and John & Brenda Foster who are next door but one. No Sunday visits this year.
I think all the other details have already been announced.
-
still no Gala letter , maybe tomorrow ::)
-
You're not alone Emma, I think it must be because they are all handwritten :(
-
I'm beginning to feel guilty that I somehow jumped the queue by returning my application on 5th December, the day after it arrived. Surely some others have received their application forms by now?
-
Not yet Alan ???
-
Have you two been naughty this year? He probably has eyes everywhere! And no, I haven't got one either!
-
I wish I'd had the foresight to scan a copy of the letter before I filled out the form.
-
nope ,no Gala letter today either :-\
-
nothing for me either
-
And I'm still waiting forrrrrrrrrrrrrr
-
Maybe Alan's was posted by mistake?
Joe was botanising on Majorca recently
-
My letter about the Gala ends "PTO", but the reverse side is blank. So I guess they could have pulled the distribution when it was discovered that the print run had gone wrong. But on past experience, this is just a proof-reading failure.
-
still no letter today :'(
-
Well, has anyone on the forum, other than AlanB, and Martin had the letter?
-
Maybe Joe has only invited them 8) !!!!
-
My letter was a nursery invite letter, inviting me have a table to sell snowdrops or my book, with info on where, who's giving talks etc. It wasn't the invitation to attend letter. The nursery/selling table invites go out earlier than the general invites.
-
Oh dear, it's going to be very lonely. :'(
-
Had my Gala invitation last Thursday, perhaps Joe is sending them in alphabetical order? Had a good read about the other galanthus events coming up, then browsed the bulb lists which had just gone online from Colesbourne and Ivycroft Plants. Before I knew what was happening ,I'd ordered three snowdrops and eaten all the Jaffa cakes!
-
As I've already ordered too many next year I must try some Jaffa cakes, they're apparently a potent corrective.
johnw
-
Well, has anyone on the forum, other than AlanB, and Martin had the letter?
er ... I had mine middle of last week. Threw it away as it's too far for me ::)
-
Cheers Diane, I'm pleased to say that there seems no need for the rest of us to panic (galanthophiles ??? ) A friend who has never missed a Gala is also waiting for her 'Dear Snowdrop Lover' letter, whilst someone in the next village has had one last weekend.
-
wow it seems very sporadic , as yet i still have no letter . I hope they dont sell out :'( , its worse than trying for a Glastonbury festival ticket , at least they all go on sale at the same time .
-
For those who would like to see our new poster and flyer from the Sneeuwklokjesgala near the Zaanse Schans i can send it in pdf if you send me a pm.
Sorry i do have them only in Dutch but the photo's are ok!
cheers Gerard

There's a list?

I`m planning to go to The Myddelton House sale and want to know who else is going there so I hopefully can meet some of you.
...and very interesting drops on the list...

Okay, I found it.

Good lord - that is some list! Trust me to be skint this year! >:(

That list made me feel faint ;)

I`m planning to go to The Myddelton House sale and want to know who else is going there
I'm tempted to go because it's only about an hour's drive away. On the other hand, the snowdrops on the list look they might be too expensive for my pocket - and I have decided to focus my snowdrop collection elsewhere.
If you go by public transport then you will need to have faith that Myddleton house really is at the end of the very urban Turkey Street. But it is (although only on foot).
-
That list made me feel faint ;)
We can't have that Jennie, someone else will have to carry all your bags ;D

Galanthus woronowii 'Cider With Rosie'

Galanthus 'Clovis'
The flowers show variable numbers of trym-type petals. Three, four, five or six on different flowers in a clump. Slow-growing but very desirable.

The dark green mark is divided to form a mark like a deer slot. Only some petals show this character, ie stably-unstable. A large plant with very blue-grey leaves.
Galanthus 'Dymock'
Small flowers with a broad x-mark. A small plant with metallic blue leaves. Rarely offered.
Galanthus elwesii 'Advent'
New variety with long ovary and outers and an arching pedicel. A very early, vigorous selection.

Galanthus elwesii 'Marlie Raphael'
A rare form with large flowers with green-tipped outers and vigorous habit.
Galanthus elwesii 'Rosemary Burnham'
One of the best of the virescents and easily the most vigorous. Short.
Galanthus 'Glenchantress'
A superb new variety with massive flowers. Should be in every collection.
Galanthus 'Greenfinch'
A rare and desirable variety. A deep green crescent mark on the outer with pinched tips. Slow-growing.
Galanthus 'Green Tear'
A wonderful new virescent snowdrop. Very vigorous and reliable.
Galanthus 'Homersfield'
A new variety, vigorous with two flowers per bulb. Tall-growing with distinctive thick outers and the marks on the inner a bit like 'Ketton' but greener eye spots.
Galanthus 'Ivy Cottage Corporal'
Distinctively-marked with green on the inners, the marks are like the two stripes of a corporal. Vigorous, but rarely offered. Early.
Galanthus nivalis 'Angelina'
A large variety with exceptionally heavily green-marked outers. Very desirable.
Galanthus nivalis 'Bishop's Mitre'
A scharlockii type with a short peduncle and very long pedicel, so long that the flowers nearly touch the ground. Very rarely offered.
Galanthus nivalis 'Flocon de Neige'
A double which reliably has six well-shaped outers and a full centre. Short. Rare.
Galanthus nivalis 'Marjorie Fish'
An extreme scharlockii with large leafy "ears" and green markings at the tips and bases of the outers.
Galanthus nivalis 'Mosquito'
A double which has the most amazing central pointel of white petals sticking out like a mosquito's proboscis.
Galanthus nivalis 'Norfolk Blonde'
A newer yellow variety with a very long ovary. The yellow is a distinctive pale colour and the leaves are a unique shade of yellow-green.
Galanthus plicatus 'E.A.Bowles'
The superb fully poculiform form of plicatus. Massive flowers, ridiculously vigorous and even the
daughter bulbs flower.
Galanthus plicatus 'Wandlebury Ring'
A good yellow variety, taller than 'Wendy's Gold'. Rarely offered.
Galanthus reginae-olgae subsp. vernalis 'Miss Adventure'
One of a bizarre group where the spathe has become white and petal-like and arches over the normal
flower like a hood. Vigorous.
Galanthus 'South Hayes'
An older, but still highly sought-after, variety with two green marks on both inners and outers. The
mark on the outer being fused into a continuous line.
Galanthus 'Timm's Hill Poë'
An amazingly vigorous plant with flowers twice the size of the usual 'Hill Poë'
Galanthus 'Trumps'
A trym-type seedling with green tips on the outers. A superb newer variety which has proved
exceptionally reliable and vigorous. Blue-grey leaves.
Galanthus 'Walker Canada'
A short plant with enormous flowers. The mark on the inner is like a thick, chunky egg-timer

Thanks. Where did they get all these from?!

Not being funny Mark, but considering who the sellers are it is not surprising.... Wol & Sue Staines, Matt Bishop, Joe Sharman, Richard Bashford, Mike Broadhurst etc...
-
I guessed that. So the House been given snowdrops to sell on and or grow maybe

Not at all Mark, it is hosting the sale, the sellers will be there on the day just like the Gala.

Still confused, sorry. Who does the list belong to?

Mark, if you'd followed the link in my initial post about the event you'd have seen this :
" The Ultimate Snowdrop Sale
Join us for our annual Snowdrop sale, where a select range of nurseries will be selling both common and rare Snowdrops. "
There's often a clue.......
-
The Myddleton list is a PDF file here http://www.visitleevalley.org.uk/media/viewfile.ashx?filetype=4&filepath=/Events/Snowdrop%20sale%202013.pdf (http://www.visitleevalley.org.uk/media/viewfile.ashx?filetype=4&filepath=/Events/Snowdrop%20sale%202013.pdf) . You need Adobe Reader (or similar) installed on your computer to read it. Neither the list nor the Myddleton House web site identify the "select range on nurseries" who will be at their sale but we know from this post http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9587.msg263735#msg263735 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=9587.msg263735#msg263735) that Glen Chantry will be there.
I don't know how Brian knows who the other sellers are.
-
so the list is a teaser of what will be available from the nurseries
-
I don't know how Brian knows who the other sellers are.
I knew who a few of those attending, as mentioned by Brian, because I've read in their websites etc that this is the case.... and. Brian knows an awful lot more 'drop sellers than I do ;)
-
As Maggi says, joined up thinking helps and keeping ones ear to the ground ;)
-
Then the Myddleton list of sellers named by Brian seems awfully similar to the list for Harvey's sale a week later.
-
'The Season' is a short one - and there are not so very many quality, specialist sellers - I expect all event organisers and the sellers are keen to grab as many chances as possible to access the market.
There will be enthusiasts who are not able to attend all the events, whether by reason of time or distance and so the repetition of sellers will be a boon for many.
-
My comment was not intended as a criticism. I was actually thinking of Matt Bishop who has a long way to travel at a time of year that is not the best for travelling and who has to make much the same journey twice, one week apart.

I didn't take it as such, Alan. Your comment here echoes my feeling- that sellers must take what opportunities present themselves.

Perhaps he is not going back inbetween Alan.

I have only ever been to one plant sale before (and that was Myddleton House last year). How does one plan their purchases/tactics in advance? Does anyone make a wish list or just wait to see what comes their way on the day? I am not into pushing and shoving.....but I fortunately have long arms which may come in handy :)
Last year my eyes needed lasering following surgery and I had double vision....it was very frustrating but I came home with some lovely plants! I remember Emma T casually walking up to Joe's stall and buying Clovis. I could not read a single plant label on that stand. Hope it's coming up Emma?
-
I stick to my rule of not paying more than £10 for a bulb, which didn't leave me with a lot at Myddleton ;D think I went slightly over on one...

I did just walk up to Joe's stand and there it was , no pushing or shoving needed . 'clovis' has multiplied nicely, i dont think its going to flower this year.

Forgive me Jennie this is going to be a bit tongue in cheek!

Well, I think you made up for it judging by the number of bags etc etc

Plans are useless, you just get swept away with the mentality of 'sweets in a sweetshop' and pick and mix, you see something you vaguely recall reading about and snatch it before someone else does; this is not a good tactic as you end up having to borrow money off friends for the one you really wanted to start with ;) but how you overcome it I don't know :-\

Very useful as it does get a bit like a WI produce sale
Last year my eyes needed lasering following surgery and I had double vision....it was very frustrating but I came home with some lovely plants!
Ah now I see why you had so many bags, double vision. Watch out everyone, this year she can see what she's after ;D
Hope you're still speaking to me Jennie :-*
:-*
-
Maybe we could coordinate and come up with a plan for the sale :P
-
Emma we would be defeated by the fact there would be only one or two 'I'm the most desirable snowdrop on the list' to be bought >:( It all adds to the fun.
-
Was going to say anyone who would like to pop into Benington after the sale would be welcome but we've had an inch of snow and more is expected, unless it melts quickly I doubt there will be much to see now.
-
Brian - I'm really tempted now; all that pushing and shoving sounds like good fun, especially when you are on the selling side of the stand! Unfortunately my wife has a steely eye when it comes to snowdrops, and a lot else besides, but it would be nice to meet up with all these wonderful growers and plantspeople.

If you are that tempted Tim, I fear the weather will be a repeat of last year, when we were selling we were absolutely nithered :-X
-
Yes, I note that publicity for the Harvey's sale the following week says "Rare species and cultivars from Harveys Garden Plants collection will be on display and for sale, all under cover and frost free".
-
Wondered if that was a little dig...
Considering how cold it was the plants at Myddleton looked very good.
-
I hope I get to see them this year, we were so cold we just headed for home :-\
-
having been at your table all morning I'm not surprised, remember it being one of the coldest days,
-
Perhaps I should rethink our plans of growing more snowdrops - we had a few similar days at a garden near to Canterbury, but the weather didn't seem to stop people coming out. Carolyn and John Millen at Spring Platt provided hot soup which has a pronounced effect on the circulation!

What can I say Brian......guilty as charged :). What good fun though. I guess I will just go with the flow and see what I come home with although I do have a few I would particularly like! Hope the weather holds out - it was snow here too today.

having been at your table all morning I'm not surprised, remember it being one of the coldest days,

Mind you, even from the photo one can see how horribly cold it was :-X

Hi Guys,
I don’t think you’ve got too much to worry about regarding the weather for next week's snowdrop sale….. I’ve just had a look at the Myddleton House website and it says…. ‘’The gardens are temporarily closed today due to icy conditions.’’

This afternoon John, just after blizzard conditions stopped. Brooke Meres just outside our cottage.

How sweet of you to speak so kindly of Art's car, Jennie!

Those going to Myddleton House will be pleased to know that Joe has said 'weather permitting' Matt Bishop will be one of the sellers, so there will be some wonderful snowdrops for sale from a large number of good growers. Humph!

What a shame you cannot make it Brian :(

Thank you Jennie, someone else will have to carry your bags! I hope I get to see you somewhere this season.
-

Jennie, I have a quite capacious shopping trolley- would you like to borrow it?
(no jokes please, Chaps, that is not a euphemisim :o...... )

You could give her your chocolate trolley, Maggi. That would hold lots of snowdrops.

Don't think my nans old shopping trolley has not crossed my mind....shame it don't fold up. May have to resort to one of those zip up laundry bags....on wheels.

Pity really, could have gone on for weeks! ;D

That dog thing is the stuff of nightmares, my own dog really didn't like the noise..

Big Dog is amazing & a little scary, just make sure it doesn't do its DooDoos on my snowdrops >:(

I was looking at the list of Great British Gardens last week. (Link posted by Maggi) http://www.greatbritishgardens.co.uk/snowdrops.htm (http://www.greatbritishgardens.co.uk/snowdrops.htm)
How lucky am I!!!
10 Gardens are in Gloucestershire, 5 in Wiltshire and 2 in Oxfordshire.
That will keep me busy and out of trouble :)
-
It was AlanB who provided the link initially 8)
There is certainly no shortage of gardens to choose from - you do seem lucky to be within striking distance of so many, Jacqueline.

I'm now starting to regret not going to the Gala :'( :'( :'(

The Great British Gardens list is... great.... but not entirely accurate! For example they list two dates for Austwick Hall (Yorkshire) where as if you check Austwick Hall's website there are seven open days listed!! AND one of the GBG dates isn't on the list!!!!
Tim DH
-
Jennie - there are more gardens opening in Kent; several for the NGS including Carolyn and John Millen, and ours at Faversham. But there aren't so many with long established and really strong collections as in the Midlands. The trouble is we are a bit out on a limb and difficult to get to for a lot of snowdrop afficianados, but that makes us all the more interesting!!!
-
I'm now starting to regret not going to the Gala :'( :'( :'(
I'll not come too.
Non, je ne regrette rien ... :)
-
I'm now starting to regret not going to the Gala
Did it sell-out this year or are there still tickets available for latecomers?
-
or me Alan? I'm sure after 9 or 10 years of attending I could pay on the door
-
£93.00 return
-
That would eat-in to the snowdrop-buying budget but my offer of transport still stands.
-
Just spoke to a very friendly member of staff at Myddleton House. Their snowdrop sale tomorrow is going ahead "unless we have 2ft of snow tonight". If anyone wants to check before driving in the morning, their visitor phone line is 08456 770600.
Hopefully see you there!
-
Hoping to go depending on the state of the roads in the morning.
-
Im hoping to get there , will bring Mum and Cheryl (plus Cheryl's helper , she broke her shoulder so she is bring her partner Howard along to do the grabbing for her )
-
Have a great day, all of you - I'm sorry to hear about Cheryl's shoulder :'(
-
I hope there are lots of wonderful snowdrops to be had - at bargain prices!! But most of all safe journeys there and back.

From me too, have a great day you all that will be visiting The Myddleton House :). Just wish we had such sales overhere.
-
No doubt we shall see some of you in the queue :D :D
-
I hope you have a great day with not too much cold.
I'm looking forward to see the pictures here!
Have fun!
Lina.
-
I'll be in the queue Chas - with rain coat and brolly!
-
I hope it's a camouflage raincoat so that you are recognized John ;D ;D
-
Have a great day everyone. Looking forward to hearing all about it and seeing what little treasures you battled for.
My Snowdrop Book by Gunter Waldorf arrived today... compensation for not being able t go to Myddleton.
-
The sun shone, the birds sang, and the snowdrops on the tables vanished rapidly... the usual suspects in the queue - queue was shorter than I expected. Maybe some people had been put off by the dire forecast? Nice to have Loes and friends from Holland round afterwards to see the collection, even though many are still emerging from winter slumbers. Thanks for the cheese Loes (note to visitors: it isn't necessary to bring a whole cheese, a side of ham will suffice).
-
Were you able to realize some of your wishes, Steve?
-
I shouldn't really be asking what with my early season enthusiasm sated by the sales at Myddleton House, but is Joe/Monksilver sending out a sales list this year for mail order? Or is all direct sales and Ebay this year?
Malcolm.
-
Hope you found some good ones, yes he should be producing a list.
-
Pleased to get woronowii Cider with Rosie... looking forward to seeing it emerge.
I also purchased EA Bowles again (fortunately a bit 'cheaper' than the first time). I promise to take better care of it this time!!
Matt had a fantastic bench of Trumps on display.
Malcolm.
-
Well done for getting Cider with Rosie !
-
It was another good day at Myddelton ;D great to see everyone and met some lurkers . Boy i am tired now mind .
-
Got a nice Three ships and Nothing special, managed to spend the same on two bulbs as I did last year but had to break my £10 limit, though 2 for what I spent evened it out so it still kind of worked, ish ;)
Nice to see everyone again.

Amazing how exhausting having fun can be, isn't it?
How did Cheryl and the unsuspecting Howard get on?
-
They both had a good day :) I think Cheryl was pleased with Howard's grabbing capabilities.

Is there anyone who can forward me, via pm, or email a copy of the e mail that Wol and Sue sent, regarding which events they would be attending this season,as I have either deleted it or a third party has deleted it from the pc,thanks in advance

:D :D ;)Found it ...................................thanks

Arthur and Jennie have just left my house. A fantastic day with loads of lovely people. I think the first post for my 'Kents this years blog' will now have to wait until tomorrow as I just want to put my feet up in front of the telly tonight. lol
But - great day - great people - great plants - great venue - and not a half bad cup of tea too both at Myddleton and Art600s.
Malcolm - Joe's list often comes out in the first week of Feb.

Aha, you beat me to it!
-
Thanks Maggi
-
Were you able to realize some of your wishes, Steve?
Hagen
Well, I managed to find three I had hoped for - Advent, Mosquito and Bishops Mitre - but I generally go in a spirit of adventure prepared to react to the unexpected. In this case it was a snowdrop called Crimean Emerald from the Monksilver table. I had never heard of it and knew nothing about it, but with an ancestor who fought in the Crimean war it was a case of buy first and ask questions later!
I was struck again by the randomness of the snowdrops for sale. Snowdrops that have been part of a stallholder's regular portfolio over past years often seemed to be missing. There was barely a Wendy's Gold or Hill Poe in sight. Very few good doubles. No sign of Amy Doncaster, one of the best greentips. It felt a bit haphazard, just as with certain snowdrop catalogues this season.
Another part of the pattern is visible on Ebay; the number of different varieties offered for sale so far this season is down by 50% on last season's range. Maybe the Gala will restore the usual range of varieties for sale, and maybe its just a case of the snowdrop sellers wanting to sell varieties at their flowering peak.
-
It's nice to hear (and see !) that a lot of forumnists had a wonderful day at Myddelton. Not only the snowdrops are important but the more the meeting with other plantsmen and galantophiles. But where are the pics ?
-
Hello Steve, your new CRIMEAN EMERALD must be a Galanthus plicatus with a lot of green.
If I had your history I would also buy this snowdrop.
Fred asked about the next good thing of Myddleton.
To meet another galanthophile must be good.
I hope to meet you at the Gala.
-
Aha, GoodGrief = Malcolm, the man in the Rab jacket. I finally put two and two together after meeting last year.
I had a good time at the Myddleton House sale today, got to say hello to lots of people from the forum and stupidly missed the opportunity to say hello to some others - sorry. It was a lovely bright day and actually quite warm if you could find yourself in a sunny spot out of the breeze.
-
Well, I took photo's of Myddleton's fabulous new 'Victorian' greenhouses... very envious. As for the snowdrops, they couldn't quite yet believe that the sun was shining.
Photos of the frenzy at the sales tables might startle weaker souls!
Malcolm.
But where are the pics ?

What a great day again at Myddleton. There was such a build up of excitement at the gate and I had my wish list clutched in my hand. By the time I got anywhere near the stand....all my top choices had vanished. Had hoped to get Clovis, Glenchantress, E A Bowles, Miss Willmott and Franz Josef.....all gone.
I quickly referred to the back up list and also found a few new ones to tempt me too! I was very happy to get Mosquito, Chequers, Wakeup Call, Ailwyn and Timm's Hill Poe.
What were other forumists favourite purchases of the day?
It was lovely to see everybody and meet a few new people too. Feel deflated now that is over >:(

I'm bracing myself Malcolm..........
-
I was dithering about going to Myddleton as we'd had fresh snow at home and BBC travel said the A12 was shut at Colchester but I sailed down the M11 and it was a lovely day. I got there after the queue had gone but still managed to get a Godfrey Owen for £20 and succumbed to a Trumps - judging by the quantity Matt had to sell, this should be a good doer!
The garden was looking beautiful but needs a couple more days to encourage the snowdrops out. With the warm sun the first were opening petals by midday. Loved the glasshouse and was amused at the profusion of cork-tipped spikeys...
-
I keep finding out about people who were at the Myddleton House sale that I missed seeing. It's mostly my own fault because I'm truly terrible at recognising people. I completely missed forumist Loes (who I've met before) and now I find out that Belgian collector Ruben Billiet was there. I once swapped one of my snowdrop finds with him, a double called "Cressida", which, if he still has it, makes him the only other person to own this one. But all this was done by email and mail; I never met him in person and missed the opportunity yesterday.
Moral: if anybody sees and recognises me, please introduce yourself and say hello.
-
Gail - I'm loving that first picture showing Richard contorting himself to read a label at the GlenChantry table.
Glad to hear that you found the roads as clear as we did.
You should see my parents place - health and safety corks abound!!!..... ;D

Really lucky that the roads were clear.
I read the text in an email notification before I came to see the photos-
I'm spending too much time with these galanthus - my first thought on reading Gail mentioning cork-tipped spikeys was to imagine some of those ghastly spikey snowdrops drawing on large cigarettes.... the aloe with real corks as something of a relief :-X

Good idea Jacqueline- but SRGC on the name tag would be a better idea! ;) :D
Emma's snow drop hat is a great IDEA for ID - I have one myself !
-
Did I read there was going to be 'Green Tear' available at Myddleton?
-
You did, there was, they sold...and I wasn't even there!
-
I never saw "Green Tear" but I'm told Joe Sharman had one for sale at £200 and it was repatriated back to Europe.

Much as I like Emma's snowdrop hats, they strike me as a little too feminine for all SRGC galanthophile forumists to wear. So for the present I'll stick to what is locally known as my "Captain Canuckhat" hat - see revised avatar.

An excellent link - thank you for posting.
-
Thank you Brian :-*
-
You're more than welcome ;)
-
Thanks, Brian. I thought I had manged to escape being photographed at this event but there I am with Corinne, who is managing a passable imitation of a Galanthophile.
-
Thanks Brian - I can just see the side of my head and I have that serious look on my face! Wish I had got a Trumps from Matt now as mine has not come up.....oh no...not another loss ::)
Today I was arranging and admiring my new acquisitions and decided to empty the pots that were not showing yet. Sadly 'Hercules' is a gonner - bought as a dormant bulb, never grew roots and turned to mush. 'Handel' and 'Compton Court' are still firm but growing no roots - would these be suitable to chip now before they turn to mush too?
-
Hi alan,
Yes i was at Myddleton House!
And i have GOOD news, i still grow cressida! I have 8 flowering bulbs of it! Please email me at: ruben_billiet@hotmail.be so we can arrange that i send you a bulb. I'm so sorry I haven't talked to you but i really did not recognised ya :-(
I founded some good snowdrops too:

Bloomer was on my wish list - can you remember which stall you got it from? You got some nice snowdrops - well done ;)
-
Jennie,
I bought Bloomer to the person on the other side of Glen chantry(from the entrance at the end on you're left side, to place next to matt bishop), i also bought ecusson d'or and greenfinch there. Can you say wich seller this was?
-
How many people attended? Looks like there was loads of room to look at the sellers snowdrops
-
Ruben - do you mean opposite Glen Chantry up at the far end? If so that was Richard Bashfield & Valerie Bexley of Woodchippings. Or do you mean opposite (on other side to) Matt Bishop? ;D
-
How many people attended? Looks like there was loads of room to look at the sellers snowdrops
Not sure how many Mark but once there is a solid line of people at the front of the stall - no one behind can see or reach the plants! When I got to the Glen Chantry stand there were two rows of people....and even my long arms could not reach. Short of pushing everyone out of your way (which is very rude) - you cannot see a thing even if you are tall.
At a guess I would say there were 150 people??? Any other guess-timates?

Hi Ruben, welcome to the forum. I'm glad you did well at the Middleton House sale - it's a long way to travel. And I'll be in touch by email.

Warning: new Forumist's first posting.
From Limerick, Ireland. Have been lurking here for a couple of seasons! Was visiting London this weekend and just happened to end up in Myddelton House.
I was travelling subject to Ryanair hand luggage requirements, so I have developed a personal solution, which I have used for snowdrops and other plants before. On the walk along Turkey Street towards Myddelton House, I identified a tree which would benefit from some extra snowdrop compost; I was armed with sandwich bags and a pair of disposable rubber gloves (no hand washing facilities near the tree!). The pots went for re-cycling. The bag of snowdrops was kept on the windowsill overnight to keep them cool and 24 hours later they are happy in their new home.
Great event; great venue. Nice talking to people in the queue. Nice to meet the dealers when the sales died down. The estimate of 150 seems about right.
For the curious I acquired the following (in no particular order)
John Long
Gal. rizehensis
Magdalen Erskine
Ding Dong
Ailwyn
Lapwing
Augustus (virus free)
Courteenhall
Rodmarton
Wasp.
I hope to be an occasional contributor - not everyday!
-
Welcome John. Paddy Tobin will be delighted to have the company of another Irish galanthophile.
I know the de-potting routine all too well ;D
-
Welcome here, John.
I believe I will have the procedure with ryanair few days after the gala.
Thanks for the idea. It seems to be a practical solution.
-
Welcome Ruben and John.
There is a tree near Nettetal that has a little pile of soil that I left behind. ;)
-
Welcome Ruben and John . John it was nice to meet you last Saturday :)
-
Welcome John, are you the guy that returned G. Sophie North when I lost mine.?
Nice to have a member within walking distance.
-
Good to hear from you Michael. Yes, you can step outside your door, shout and I should hear you
And yes too about G. Sophie North.
What I gave you were offspring of the one you gave me. I have 3 slightly different G. Sophie Norths. All came from reliable sources. Two are in flower and the third is not yet open.
I'm still on a learning curve with this Forum - 2nd post. So, I'll think about photos of G. Sophie North and put it in the January thread and ask for opinions. Could be a few days - I'll wait for G. Sophie North number 3 to flower.
-
Nice to have you with us on the forum John, I look forward to you getting the hang of posting photos too! I love Lapwing and hope you enjoy the rest of your purchases.
-
Hi John,
Great to have you here on the forum. Great to have another Irish person interested in snowdrops and good that you are close to Michael. Looking forward to your posts. Good selection you got in Myddleton House. Hope they all do well for you.

Great short film Loes - you should have got them at the beginning when they were all charging forward! It was lovely to meet you and you managed to get some lovely plants. Sorry, I got the last Rosemary Burnham ::) I was not going to get it as I have heard it is difficult and I have enough problems as it is ;) Fingers crossed
-
Hi Loes
Sorry I couldn't watch and enjoy your video too. Trying to do so I encountered a message that "Windows Media Player" was needed and I should install a "Plug-in"; tried clicking on that that and found myself wandering like the Marie Celeste in a cyberspace wilderness. So I "plugged out" and regretfully decided that videos posted on SRGC are not for nerds like me. Better stick to living plants. As Clint Eastwood said, "A man's gotta know his limitations".... :(

Is anyone passing very close to Stansted on the way to the Gala? Are you returning that way also on the same day?
-
I havent a clue what my Mum and i will be doing now ............poor Mum has Shingles :-\ :'( and the relatives we were to be staying with have had to have hospital treatment :'( , so we cant stay with them ( all our other relatives have tiny houses with no spare rooms )
Its a 4 hour drive for us to get there . I dont fancy driving that far doing the gala then having to drive the 4 hours back . Mum may or may not be able to help with the driving depending on how much better she feels :-\
If anyone can recommend a place to stay that wont break the bank i would be thankful .
-
Emma, my best wishes to your Mum- hope she doesn't feel too poorly and makes a good recovery.
And I do hope you can work out some scheme to get around to the Gala.
-
Thank you Maggi :-* Mum still wants to go to the gala , its just a question of how we go about getting there :)
-
Ouch! Both Ian and my brother had shingles and it wasn't pleasant. Ian had it on his eyes and the hospital was very worried. My brother had it on his waist and it was very painful - both were thankfully completely fine after a couple of weeks.
There is a free spare room here Em (and a couple of sofa beds in the office and living room if Mrs and Mr Lettace are with you) if you can't find a better offer aned would be happy with a slightly decreased driving distance. I'm always up by 6am so could make sure I chuck you out early so that you don't miss a second of the Gala. ;D
-
:-* :-* :-* :-*
I will talk to mum and see what she thinks.
The shingles are on her back, near her shoulder blade, she has got some nasty tasting anti-virals to help get rid of it and some hefty pain killers .

Thankyou very much for the offer John, :-* but the Gala will be to much of a rugby scrum for me this year.
The bones are still mending :-[. i'll look forward to all the posts.
-
As I can't make the Gala :'( I'm just looking at travel for the RHS London show on the 19th/20th and wondering which day is best (if there's any difference besides the closing time)? I haven't been before, and although I wouldn't be going principally to buy snowdrops... do any 'good ones' sell out on the first day?
-
Hi Anthony - If you are going to the show to buy, then you must go on the first day. You will see lots of forumists there too. If you are just going to look, then the second day is much quieter. See you there :)
-
Maybe I am speaking out of turn, but the RHS Show has never struck me as a good place to buy snowdrops. You see these incredible displays with many rare and exotic snowdrops but these are not actually for sale. Most of what is for sale is quite well-known and quite readily-avaiable. That said, I have never got there much before noon on the first day so it's possible the really rare ones just sell-out in the first hour.
You might be better-off driving over to Harveys sale on 2nd February, if you can get there http://www.harveysgardenplants.co.uk/galanthus.asp (http://www.harveysgardenplants.co.uk/galanthus.asp) .
-
Thanks Ding Dong and Alan.
I wish I could make the sale at Harveys, but I'm being dragged to a wedding in Staffordshire that day :( February is not a good month for me this year- I'm going to miss most of the events/chances to buy the more desirable snowdrops!
I will pop down on the first day of the show and see what's there. I have quite a lot of the readily available snowdrops, but I'll be interested to look around, hopefully bump into/rub elbows with a few forumists, and if I find a snowdrop or two to buy, I'll be happy!
If you are on the Avon stand Ding Dong, I'll definitely say hello :)
-
Hi Anthony
I would say the first day is best - for me this is because any that are being put before the joint rock committee are only there on the Tuesday. Sadly last year there weren't any - but in previous years it has been my first ever viewing of certain flowers ('E A Bowles', 'Witchwood', 'Hugh Mackenzie', 'Greenfinch', 'Green Tear' and many more were all ones that I first saw at RHS halls).
A pick of Ding Dong trying to hide last year is here :) : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8432.msg232081#msg232081 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=8432.msg232081#msg232081)
Also, as mentioned, it is the busiest day so is the day most likely to meet friends old and new.
-
Ha - thanks for that John!! Have added a few more grey hairs since then!! See you there all :) :) ;)
-
Quite right about the RHS Show. I have picked up great new snowdrops there but these were ordered in advance and for pickup. I did however find Foxgrove's big form of Whittallii at one show, it was on display but they had to bring it in the next day. A good place to meet up with the notables like you, kentgardener and the cognoscenti.

It was a friend's birthday today and four of us met for lunch at Harvey's garden plants. They were just setting out their snowdrops in readiness for tomorrow's snowdrop day, so for those of you attending here is a foretaste;

There are no pggy banks in the galanthophile's world, just massive warthog repositories.

I went to Colesbourne Park today.
It is 10 or 12 years since I went last time, but the place seemed virtually the same.
It was a lovely sunny day.

The ground was a bit muddy in places, I still enjoyed a good walk around.
The sales table was well stocked & not too much of a scrum.

Having only got one weak Green Brush left would be interested to know where that was growing, looks like a very raised position with the wall?
-
The Green Brush was in the raised bed, just along from where the person is bending over to look at snowdrops in the first picture with the house.
There was paving in a courtyard behind the raised bed, plus paving on a path in front and it is probably south facing with lots of sun.
I'll add the last of the pics I took.

Thanks Rob, will give it one more chance in similar spot.

Colesbourne looks lovely as usual... I hope to go next week as it's quite close to us. I always like how the sales tables are near the loos. I assume this is done so that people like me can (and do) secretly buy more snowdrops while those we come with are visiting the loo.
Thanks to John and JohnW for the advice about the RHS show. Train tickets booked for the first day! I'll keep my fingers crossed that something will be before Joint Rock this year and hope to see some of you there.

Hi Anthony
I might be hard to spot as I will be in camo. ;) If you spot me please come and say hi. :) I usually arrive just after midday as will have to do a few hours work in the morning.

A sunny February day and snowdrop time. Carolyn and John Millen, who run the Mid-Kent Group of the AGS, always open their garden in early February for the NGS, and visitors come as much for the hot homemade soup as for the amazing collection of Galanthus that Carolyn and her daughter have amassed in a relatively short time. They are mostly grown in lattice pots in raised beds to ensure that named varieties are kept segregated and they can be easily lifted and divided or twin-scaled.
A year or two ago there were some 200 plus varieties; this year over 400(!), and like many snowdrop gardens the interest just grows and grows. Visitors vary; many just love seeing these plants so early in the year, but would have no idea that some might cost £20 or £30 a bulb. Others, sad to say, have been just as bitten by the bug and enviously look at the latest and most fashionable variety. It makes little difference, the plants look great either way - and what else would bring out so many gardeners in the coldest days of the year?
Just a few of this remarkable collection: 'Benhall Beauty' - an old rather lax variety but historically important as coming from John Gray's garden; 'Fenstead End' - an elegant little plant from Chris Grey-Wilson's previous garden; 'John Tomlinson' - this has a striking flower, named for the plantsman by Chris Brickell (who has a pretty good eye for snowdrops!); and 'Rogers Rough' - this is a good vigorous Kentish variety named for Richard Bird's garden at Kilndown near to Goudhurst. Carolyn and her daughter have amassed very many fascinating varieties - has anyone heard of 'Hercule'? (Quite a good name for a snowdrop somehow, but not as good as some others I have seen such as 'Long Tall Sally').
-
Carolyn grows many of these, along with smaller plants derived by twin-scaling, in a series of raised beds just outside the back door of the house. For the afficiando excitement can come just by seeing a name on a label(!) - even more when you can see ‘Diggory’ or ‘Lapwing’ flowering in small groups. Many of these choice and special varieties are best displayed in this way - they would be lost and overlooked in woodland borders and not so easily compared, which is after all what makes them so intriguing and often controversial. At the side of the house the growing collection has requiried a series of sleeper beds - these contain a host of Galanthus completely new to me, such as ‘Hercule’, but also the nice species rizenhensis which can do nicely in the garden. ‘Round the back’ are greenhouses and frames where young twin-scales are grown on and new plants collected (like the most fascinating parts of alpine nurseries where all the real action goes on).
John may be as bemused as many, such as my wife, that a gardener can be keen to grow so many snowdrops, but when they fill the garden with flowers in winter their charm is captivating. However, in the alpine house is a nice collection of saxifrages, oxalis and other small alpine cushions, which start flowering not long after the snowdrops have finished.
A nice day out for the alpine gardener in February!

Really like those terraced sleeper beds, look very smart, hope to visit the garden one day.
-
Thanks for this report Tim, the more I see it the more I would like to visit!
-
Gala week and traditionally snow covers the ground. Have you got snow?
-
Yep!
-
Not in this part of the world
-
Nor here but a very strong biting wind, was hoping to be out in the garden today ..................but the sun is shining ;D
-

Not here Mark. Bright sunshine - but bloody freezing and overnight was so windy it blew over the really big bamboo pot out front. I woke to find hanging it over the pavement with people having to step into the road to avoid it!
-
Yes VERY windy & cold here in Somerset, frequent hailstorms & sleet with bright periods...............I sound like a weatherman ::)
-
Wintry showers on and off all day, no snow has settled :)
-
Snow currently settling here in mid-Suffolk.
-
Couple of Eranthis with a tipping for snow
-
Managed to get in a full day of gardening after a shower overnight.

;D
...and would you believe it, now it's snowing!
-
Hope that snow is short-lived with the sales and visitors ahead.
We have 10cm on the ground, dodged 40cm nicely on the weekend but now another storm is brewing.

Drat - I got my dates muddled and thought Carolyn had an open garden for two weekends but this year it is two consecutive days. I was looking forward to seeing the collection again as last time we went it was ferocious wind and almost impossible to take a photograph. Thanks for posting your account of the day Tim and next year I will be sure to check the dates properly. What a great collection they have amassed and it looks like lots were in bloom.
Do they use horticultural sand or builders sand to fill those huge raised beds? Anyone know?
Started snowing here earlier in Kent...but it soon turned to rain.

Hi Jennie
On their website ( http://kentsnowdrops.com/open-dates/ (http://kentsnowdrops.com/open-dates/) ) it says:
Spring Platt Garden open 13th February for Demelza House
Spring Platt Garden open 6th February for the NGS
-
I'm not sure what they fill the beds with; it must be beautifully drained. John has worked for many years building and maintaining golf courses and has a great knowledge of soil drainage and good growing conditions, and at least in the garden it must help when you live on the top of a hill!
-
The dates when Sping Platt garden is open this year was last weekend. the dates John gave were for last year.
If any groups want to come give us a call.
As for the raised beds they are filled with a double washed sand on a gravel base which crates a perched water
table, that will drain and also hold water.

A definitive answer - thanks John!
We could see the gravel bases in photos from John's blog last year- will just check the link......

From the Telegraph website- Best places to see snowdrops in 2013
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardenstovisit/9827088/Best-places-to-see-snowdrops-in-2013.html?frame=2463896 (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardenstovisit/9827088/Best-places-to-see-snowdrops-in-2013.html?frame=2463896) - worth a look if only to enjoy the photos
-
I was talking to Alan Street last Friday at Avon Bulbs & he told me he isn't 'doing' the RHS show this year as it has been put back a week & he cannot keep the snowdrops from going over without cold storing them which he finds very unsatisfactory.
So there's going to be a big Alan sized hole this year. :'(
EDIT: There was a mis-understanding- Avon Bulbs WILL be at the RHS Show !
-
I know so many people enjoy the Avon displays at the RHS London show- we've had the pleasure of seeing many photos in the forum.
EDIT : AVON will be at the RHS show!!
-
Yes Maggi, he works incredibly hard to perfect his displays
Wonderful display on the nursery though :o 8)
-
I had heard on the grape vine that the later RHS week was going to cause even more problems for the galanthus displays to be worth doing.
If the RHS keep this later week (to fit in with school half term holidays?) as a regular thing then they will have ruined one of the best annual Galanthus shows of the year.
I can not express how gutted I was a few years back when the RHS did away with the January show!!! :'(
If the the RHS now ruin the February show too buy turning it into a 'design show' (that very few people seem to be interested in) and make it too late to show Galanthus it really could lose them a lot of support!
:'(
-
Noo!!! ??? We are DEFINATELY going to the RHS Show, don't worry folks, we will be there. I think what Mike means is that Alan doesn't think we will get a good medal, because it has been hard to hold the snowdrops back with the show being a week later. All the orders that people are collecting there have been sorted, and will be setting off for London on Sunday afternoon. Come and say hello anyone - see you there :) :) :)
-
;D ;D ;D ;D Oh i was worried then , it wouldnt be the same with out Avon, i wouldnt go just for the design show :-X
-
Crikey- well that IS good news- I'll go correct the previous posts.
AVON WILL BE AT THE RHS SHOW, FOLKS!!
[attachimg=1]
-
Don't panic Emma ;) We'll be there, same spot as last year I think. And John you're right, if the show is going to be a week later every year, then it is going to make it more difficult to hold the snowdrops back, and hard to fill a stand with just snowdrops.
-
;D yay
-
Seems like there may be an interesting debate about plants and plantspeople and plants and design, like there always is at the Chelsea Show. Of course the two are hardly incompatible but those early RHS Shows were rather wonderful, and I still find it hard to understand why it should be so hard to attract gardeners to the RHS Halls in the middle of London! The Snowdrop displays have always been outstanding and timing is of the essence.
-
I'm pretty sure it is not only gardeners who are reluctant to venture in to central London.
There does seem to be a general feeling about the RHS that is more and more about business and less about plants- which can't be a healthy situation for the RHS to be in.
-
YIKES............sorry folks I obviously misunderstood what Alan said....... ???
It wouldn't be the same without him would it!
Or Ding Dong 8)
-
Phew - that's a relief. I am sure that news has made lots of people happy. The RHS really should be more understanding from the growers point of view. I gave up my RHS membership after 15 years last year.
-
In my experience of going to the RHS February Show, 95% of the people that go there, are going to see snowdrops, but to look through The Garden magazine and read their publicity of the 'London Plant and Design Show', you would even know there were going to be any snowdrops there. If they dropped the 'design' bit, they could have it all in one hall and have it in the week that it used to be, without having to fit in with Westminster School's half term, after selling one of the halls to them last year.
-
Well both Jan and I were very dissapointed when we visited the design show last year, and very quickly returned to the other halls ,and certainly will not be visiting that part of the show this year
-
Well I would say Ding Dong is quite right. When you consider that a Snowdrop event the Kent HPS held at Goodnestone Park near Canterbury attracted well over 1000 people one year, and that gardens opening for snowdrops often have many hundred visitors, the opportunity to attract a lot more people to a February Show in London must be there, despite travel and parking difficulties. After all there are a modest number of people who actually live in London. I wonder how the Chelsea Physic Garden does with its events?
-
After all there are a modest number of people who actually live in London.
Poor souls......... they would certainly deserve a show to cheer them up!
-
I did ask on another thread, but I'll ask again here after reading how good the CGS day was. .. Are any other forumists going to the HPS day tomorrow?

As reports of galanthophila spread around the world, the Washington Post has a piece - running to three web pages, of reports on the craze and recent Altamont Gala in Ireland. Some photos from John Grimshaw, comments from Guy de Schrijver ( Geebo ) and also a video with Hester Forde featured and Alan Street ....
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/letter-from-ireland/2013/02/19/dac385ca-722e-11e2-8b8d-e0b59a1b8e2a_story_2.html (http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/letter-from-ireland/2013/02/19/dac385ca-722e-11e2-8b8d-e0b59a1b8e2a_story_2.html)
(the video seems to be on a loop with others and a short advert - persevere!)
-
Thanks Maggi - I quite enjoyed that. :)
-
I too enjoyed the brief video.
I think it is clear that its maker and narrator, Adrian Higgins, is NOT a Galanthophile.

I don't know him at all, but I'm guessing that he's not a very experienced presenter, either?

Hi Folks,
I went to Hodsock Priory last week with a couple of friends… The weather was cold & grey. A lot has changed since my last visit. The house is out of bounds, there are two huge marquees to accommodate snowdrop visitors. I only found two galanthus labels. The other winter plants were more interesting. That was true of the sales area too. My camera battery failed (Oh the joys of ’special’ rechargeable batteries!)
I went to Austwick Hall yesterday with my parents… The weather was cold & grey. Its a smaller estate, with about a dozen statues amongst the snowdrops. The house itself isn't 'off limits', only we got the opening hours wrong! Most of the snowdrops don’t seem to have been in for long (less than five years?) but many of them are clearly labelled. Not many other winter plants. About a dozen galanthus varieties for sale. Added bonus: The Gamecock (in the village) does excellent food with a French twist (I had the lapin!) and it has an open fire.
Personal Verdict…. I’ll return to Austwick.

I'm not sure whether snowdrops are an antidote to the economic woes of Europe - I imagine snowdrops have always been beautiful one way or another, and woes around quite often. That is quite a good fun video; I thought the presenter wasn't bad - snowdrops don't call out for the highly polished and it came across well. Is galanthomania really sweeping across Europe? Not a bad thought.

You probably could not see the german tv program with the interview with Rudi Bauer.
Here is the link, that Sven did put in the Belgian forum.

Great link, Lina- super film about the Bauers and the Oirlicher day. Really enjoyed that!
-
Thanks Lina. I enjoyed the video even though I didn't understand most of it.
I did manage to pick up on 'Gala' and 'Englander' and some of what Alan Street was saying under the translation.
-
I do believe I saw Martina at Rudi Bauer's stall and one or two other faces seemed familiar.
-
Hah - love it! Must ask Alan where he got that hat!! :)

Oh! Was that a hat? I thought he'd just grabbed a passing kitten and stuffed it on his head because of the cold! ::) ;)

I'm sure he will - he said he'd been on German TV, but I was unprepared for the hat! :)

In this country we'll grab any hapless creature as a hat or scarf.

Don't laugh John. Knotting a live dachshund scarf is no mean feat.

I went on the last weekend this year - lovely day out - was disappointed though at the stock left - not many to choose from - should have done what others seem to have done and pre order then collect (there were quite a few not collected though) was tempted to stay to the end then see if any I wanted were left but didn't due to the long drive back up north.
Anyone know of any good gardens to visit up this way - everyone open for snowdrops who also sell as I am just a learner seems to be Gloucester and further down south but I am determined to make some very challenging drives next year if anyone on here would be kind enough to in box me when dates are appearing.
-
Where do you live ? That will help folks give suggestions......
-
Sorry I am new to this and not set up an avatar or anthing like other member have, don't even know where to start - any help at all very gratefully accepted.
I live in Lancashire on the Fylde Coast near to Blackpool if that makes it easier - but willing to travel and boy does the car get some annual milage on it.
-
I've added your location to your profile for you- if you look in your Profile area - click on the Profile button at the top of the page- you can upload a little photo as you avatar... it needs to be quite small- around 100 by 150 pixels maximum, I think. If you have trouble, email it to info@srgc.org.uk and I'll load it for you.
Getting back to snowdrops- You'll be well placed to attend the Blackpool sho next weekend- there may some snowdrops on sale there!
-
Thank you so much Maggie for the help - where is the show and when please
