Title: David Quinton's Snowdrop Collection
Post by: Brian Ellis on August 01, 2012, 07:29:56 PM
It is Katherine’s intention that some of the choice , larger bulbs will be sold on E Bay, hopefully towards the end of August.

Katherine would like to sell the bulk of  David’s collection  at the Anglia Group Bulb Sale on the 19th August.  Because of their small  or medium size  they will be available in starter packs so people can see what they are buying.  There will be a very good range of varieties and they will be priced to reflect the fact that many will have to be grown on to flowering size.

Please note they will not be available before the event!

Also one of David’s choice bulbs will be auctioned at the event.

The details of the bulb sale are below.

The AGS Mid Anglia Group’s bulb sale will be at Pentlow Mill near Cavendish  CO10 7SP on the 19th August at 2.00pm. The former mill home of Andrew and Jenny Clark has a delightful garden with extensive river frontage with both mature plantings and smaller, intimate areas. Teas and cakes will be available. Needless to say as usual a wide range of other bulbs will be available.

I hope  lots of people will be able to attend the sale.... a second thread was begun by mistake but the information was a repeat of the details given here, so I have removed it.

I am in more societies than I can keep up with.  I take it one does not have to be a member of the Alpine Garden Society to attend the sale?  And it's really on a Sunday?

I'm sure Mark will agree that it is well worth attending as there are some good growers there, and the auction is always interesting :D

Katherine will be at the sale and will have remaining copies of the book with her in the car - she has not got a stall for it so you will have to ask her.  Price £30.  She will also have a list of the snowdrops that will be sold on eBay which she will be handing out.

I'll be thinking of you all enjoying the bulb sale tomorrow - but I'll be hoping especially that Katherine manages to enjoy the day.

For those of you who weren't at the bulb sale and are interested in any of the snowdrops, the flowering size bulbs will be sold on eBay, some will be sold this week, others at the end of August as Katherine needs a break from it all.  Here is the flyer that she gave out today.

David's widow, Katherine, has asked me to mention that she will be listing some of David's snowdrops on ebay later today.  She has found out that she is only allowed to list 10 items in one month so not everything will be listed today.

Next week Katherine will be taking young James on a much needed holiday.  When she returns the rest of David's bulbs will be listed on ebay.

Katherine's seller ID on ebay is  kqui6309:  You can click here (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/kqui6309/m.html?_nkw&_armrs=1&_from&_ipg=25&_trksid=m194&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSRCHX:SRCH) for an easy link.

I don't keep a list of past results but it looks to me as if Katherine achieved some good prices; particularly given that we are out-of-season for snowdrops.

You're quite right Alan, for the most part, whoever bought Richard Blakeway-Phillips and Moortown got a bargain though - and it was the same person too.  I do hope she does as well for the next lot as there are some good varieties there.

Katherine tells me she has put some more great snowdrops on eBay tonight and more are going on tomorrow.  She apologizes to those who tried to bid from Europe and the glitch should have been sorted out.

There certainly are Brian - some very nice varieties indeed including one of my top 5 snowdrops - 'Hugh Mackenzie'.

John I should think that is one of anyone's top five who grows it, I might have to have another bulb ;)

It's good to know that at least 6 of the first lot have gone to forumists, I know someone else is a lurker and has one so that makes 7 and there were two second offers to another lurker  :) so that means at least 8 of us have a little bit of David's collection.

Well done Mr Grumpy - bet that made you more cheery! ;) ;D

I do hope that the response for all the bulbs is as good for the sake of Katherine knowing they are going to good homes and for DQ's memory to be held by all who get a bulb from his collection.

I rather hoped that people were paying high prices to honour the memory of David Quinton.  Or am I being too sentimental?

Madness the prices paid for most ! :o :o :o
Some could have been obtained much cheaper elsewhere. ???

Indeed Trevor, they are listed elsewhere, but that doesn't mean you can necessarily get hold of one!  Nonetheless, like Alan, I would hope there is a bit of honouring David's memory.  I was delighted that the 'Josie' that I sent so that he could see it in flower reached such a high price which will be going to help provide for his young son.

Hello all
I was rather hoping to win Mose's Basket but it went beyond my piggy bank savings too  :)  Mainly I was hoping to add a snowdrop to my collection that once belonged to David in his memory.  I will have to be happy that I have his lovely book which I am saving until snowdrop season to read.  I have not even flipped through it yet as I want to savour it later.

Glad its nearly that time of year again

Jennie
