Now I know this is no alpine, but its identity escapes me.
This came to me as Cremanthodium arnicoides which it definitely is not. It grows to about 5 feet tall, flowers now. Do not think it is Inula magnifica as the flower petals are not really narrow enough.
The leaves are a good 3 feet long as you can see, rough on the top but much softer and silvery underneath.
Anyone any ideas?

Telekia http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=telekia%20speciosa&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1024&bih=534&wrapid=tlif134296250585310&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=VfsLUP_YJuqS0QXwwMWqCg (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=telekia%20speciosa&psj=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1024&bih=534&wrapid=tlif134296250585310&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=VfsLUP_YJuqS0QXwwMWqCg)

That was my original idea, but the book says that it has 'deeply toothed margins' to the leaves. Well these leaves are entire. Thanks anyway.
Unless there is another Telekia besides speciosa which I am missing.

Have a look at Inula sp. also ( many of them, I.helenium could be the plant)
This plant has appeared many times in the seed exchanges as Cremanthodium arnicoides ( which wouldn't grow that easy I think)

Had a closer look at the edge of the leaves and they are toothed, but only shallow indentations, if you see what I mean.
Certainly Inula helenium is a good candidate. Thank you. I shall have to dig some up and smell the root to see if it smells of Camphor.

The leaves of the Telekia are said to be "aromatic" - I take that means if crushed.....
