Title: ROSCOEA-2012
Post by: David Nicholson on May 24, 2012, 07:52:45 PM
I never did get round to re-locating my Roscoeas to a more shaded part of the garden. First one to flower this year, Roscoea cautleyoides 'Jeffrey Thomas', some others in bud.

Some of ours are a mm above the surface, many species not showing yet. You've shocked me with this one David :o :o

Wonderfully 8).

Last year I had a very nice clump, but this year we had a tough freeze in the end of January after a mild start of the winter. That also did decrease Roscoea cautleoides. This year I only have 4 flowering size R. cautleoides. Let's hope next year will be better.

A nice clump -- Roscoea humeana? -- a gift from a good friend.  Most other roscoeas are just showing leaf or color.

I would think that is R. humeana, Claire... and very lovely it is too.

Another roscoea -- marked R. tumjensis (though the name may not be correct).  R. cautleyoides is now flowering, with R. auriculata and an unnamed roscoea not far behind.

A lovely clump of R humeana, Claire. My two clumps (purple and alba forms) are only just coming through the soil.

Here's both the yellow and purple forms of Roscoea cautleyoides flowering in the garden today. 'Pennine Purple' is not so advanced.

Those look good, David... ours are seldom out of the ground before July - certainly no sign of them yet.

R. humeana

I am particularly pleased with this pot of R.humeana, flowering today from seed sown in December 2009. The colour is more towards a 'plum' colour than is typical, and is I think very similar to that of forma tyria. Particularly unusual is the white / colourless stripe running down the length of the dorsal petal, on one of the plants. It remains to be seen if this is a constant feature for this plant, and if so, if it is stable enough to return year on year.

Interesting form Ron.

Roscoea cautleyoides "Pennine Purple" now in flower but got a bit battered by the rain last weekend.

R. humeana alba - started after the rain stopped so looking good. Funny though the purple form is lagging behind, only about 5 cm above soil. ???

Thanks for posting your picture of 'Purple Streaker', David.  I have a very similar roscoea just coming into flower that was acquired with no name attached.  From descriptions online it might be Roscoea purpurea 'Purple Streaker'.  Any opinions?

Your photo shows really well how amazingly transparent some flowers can become as they age, or after a lot of rain ( as is usually the case here!  :P )

Any advice on the best time to divide roscoeas?

I've always done it when they're dormant (which probably covers most of the year!) in early spring.
As a plus you also get a fabulous ginger smell from the roots when you handle them.   :D

Very nice Roma, it's a nice deep colour. I bought a white one but was disappointed as it is really pale pink.

A nice species Roscoea which I don't have a name for. It is about the last to flower and has lovely glaucous blue leaves. Any ideas?

This is another named R x beesiana isn't it Roma? According to Jill Cowley ( The Genus Roscoea, 2007 ) its named after the propagators wife.

Susan, could your plant possibly be R. wardii ? The flowers look right for this species ( in shape etc, but colour is maybe too 'purple' ) and I have recently been reading that it sometimes develops glaucous leaves.

Although there is also R. cautleyoides 'Old Purple' which is also said to have bluish leaves. :)

R. auriculata

Always the last to flower for us. Perhaps not the most classy of the Roscoea, and sometimes the clumps look a bit scruffy ( as ours do in these pictures ), but its one of the easier ones and clumps up quickly. Often confused with R.purpurea.

Collecting seeds for exchanges - I got this small species as R. alpina. Is this the right name?
Title: Re: ROSCOEA-2012

No, sorry Anne, its R.scillifolia scillifolia.
A very tough resilient sp. and a profligate seed producer. Also available in black ( well very dark purple ) as R. scillifolia atropurpurea.
A lovely plant  ;D

Glad to help Anne,  :)

There is a lot of variation with R. scillifolia scillifolia. The leaves can be long and thin, (on tall 20cm plants), or short and fat ( on squat 10 cm plants ). The degree of exsertion of the flowers is also very variable. All forms are still very prolific in the seed production, and will flower easily in their second year.
