Looking at what is likely to be ready for Saturday I see a Rhododendron that went to Aberdeen two years ago but to Glasgow last year will probably still be ok for the granite city this time. By contrast the rhodo that won the relevant trophy at Edinburgh this year usually flowers for Glasgow - all of which just shows how a season that started very early has slowed down.
Enough on the weather - what is the home baking forecast for this weekend??
-
I haven't heard the home baking forecast as yet, Stan... but thesoup will be Leek and potato, by popular demand ;)
-
We had leek and potato soup for tea yesterday. ;D
-
Stan I have just had a sample of some home baking made by my friend Helen Mcgregor, It was lovely. There was a piece for my hubby but since he is away golfing and having his tea out I have had his piece as well ::) ;D Hopefully there will be plenty goodies to choose from.
See everyone on Saturday.
Angie :)
-
Well he can't expect to have his cake and eat it, when he has a gold club in the other. Too much of a good thing. ;D
-
Well its the Eve of the final Aberdeen Show. :(
Good luck to everybody ;D, congratulations for what has obviously an amazing history 8), and hope that all goes well to Maggi, Ian and the crew for the Grand Finale tomorrow. 8)
Shame I'll never get to one :( :(, but time to move on. ;)
-
Two days of continuous rain >:( Plants soaking, pots heavy :( Had to scrub pots in the rain this evening. Got soaked through my jacket >:( Car loaded :) Early start in the morning :-\.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow ;D
-
Travel safely, Graham - and everyone else who will be early on the road tomorrow.
Thanks for the good wishes Ron - it looks to be shaping up to be a lovely show. The sun even came out for a little while later today!
Can't promise that tomorrow but it should at least be dry.
I can't admit how long Ian and I have been Show Secretaries in Aberdeen... it would blow my cover as a sweet 18 year old...... but this is the 21st year in our present venue- and we weren't new to the job then!
It will be a bittersweet day... but who knows, after a year to take stock, there may be new blood to take over.... there is always that chance to hope for.
Off now to tidy the house a bit!

Same here Graham, I tried to scrub the green of my pots, back still not good so they just really only got a quick wipe, fed up with all this rain. Take care coming up, there will be a nice piece of home baking for you.
Angie :)

I don't believe this : my boiler has sprung a leak.......... :'( >:( Of all the times........ :-X

The main award winning plants.
Cyril Lafong took the Forrest medal with Daphne calcicola, a plant that has won several awards at previous shows.
SdP took the Walker of PortlethenTrophy for most points in section 1 due to taking the most plants to section 1; he also took the Simpson Rhododendron Salver with R. Ermine.
Cyril took the Craig Cup fro best Primula with P. forresti and received a Certificate of Merit for Cypripedium Maria in the 3 pan class for small pot sizes.
Ian Christie received Certificates of Merit for his 3 pans of Meconopsis and for Cypripedium Aki.
Mike Hopkins received a Merit Cert. for Lewisia Joyce Halley while Cyril received another Merit Cert. for Lewisia leana.
Harold Esslemont had the record for most Forrest medals until Cyril ovetook him recently - fittingly Cyril won the Esslemont Quaich for 3 pans of rare or difficult plants.
-
In a very competitive section 2 Angela Townsley took the Brian Bull trophy for two plants with Silene hookeri and Aster natalensis as well as the Aberdeen Quaich for the best plant in section 2 with Cypripedium Karl Heinz- the photo is out of sequence-it is the last picture. She also received a Certificate of Merit in the open section for her Campanula.
Tom Macleish won the award for best plant from a first time exhibitor but also won the small 6 pan classes in section 2 and section 1- Diamond Jubilee B and A
John Owen received the Bronze Medal for most points in section 2.
In class 96 for mini gardens three sisters each entered a garden and the judges decided that they could not be separated so all three were given joint first and shared the Elizabeth Bowl for the best entry from a junior member.

Here is the first of two batches of photos I took later in the afternoon. Thanks to everyone for making it a special day.

A special "well done'' to Angie for her awards. That delightful lady is so modest I'm sure she was surprised but she loves her plants and garden so much that I've no doubt the awards were well deserved. Congratulations and jubilations Angie. :-* :-* :-*
-
What a lovely show. I see the Dale's in the first picture with the grandchildren. Hope they did well....
-
Angie, congratulations from me too!
Just must have had a great day, all of you.
Maggie, I wonder how you are! Is there a lot of damage? Must have been a desaster, happening on a day that you are so busy!!
Lina.
-
Yes aren't they beautiful, and beautifully grown, plants 8) Well done indeed Angie.
Thanks very much for the report Stan. As always, much appreciated by those of us who are geographically challenged.
Can anyone please tell me what the lovely little white rhododendron is, in the left foreground of Stan's Picture 2?
-
Congratulations Angie, good show.
-
Can anyone please tell me what the lovely little white rhododendron is, in the left foreground of Stan's Picture 2?
It is Rhododendron 'Egret'
-
Its beautiful...
-
And not exactly little Christine - not sure how Stan fits all his plants into his car - I think it is actually a tardis myself ;D
-
I remember Mike Dale telling me one year how Maggi & Ian were struggling in with a dustbin containing a rhodo, you seem to go in for biggies up there ....
-
It is Rhododendron 'Egret'
Thanks Graham. One I must look out for.

Thanks Graham. One I must look out for.

Remarkable report Stan of such a splendid show. Congratulations to Cyril, Angie, Stan and ALL the winners (and ALL the runner-ups, without whom the show would be pretty thin), to the team who made it all happen and to the retiring (never been described like that before, eh?) show secretaries who have (and continue to) expended so much time, energy and perspiration. Wish I could have visited just one of your events Ian & Maggi ... many thanks from us all.
-
now for some views of section 2
-
some people among the plants
-
finally some of the local group and other helpers not least Mr and Mrs Young in their last show as secretaries.
-
I trust Ian isn't saying; "To infinity and beyond!" in that final image?
Thanks again Stan for a superb report.
-
Captured the heart and soul of the show I reckon. Great job Stan!
-
Stan, that is terrific..... many, many thanks to you for this, and all your other show reports.
I've got some pix as well..... not as good as Stan' but I'll get around to posting them sometime.... Ian has a few too... it was a lovely day. Sad in that it was the end of an era ... but there can always be another flowering !
-
Christine, I have some news for you..... you left the entry of the two plants you sent up with Mike and Pearl to Mike's discretion .... he entered them in Section I ...... where I think they both won! Will double check that later, but I think I'm right! Congratulations!
Thank you, and the Dales very much for taking the time and trouble to support the Show.
The Dales have long had very close Aberdeen connections, of course...... I think it was 21 years ago, in the first year in this venue, that young Heather, then a student in the city, came along to help out at the show.
Seems like yesterday!
-
I think the furthest travelled plants for the show came from Hampshire - not show plants, but a large and super selection of plants donated for the Club plant stall from Jane, the daughter of local member Frances Lyall. :D :)
What a delightful surprise that was!
-
I trust Ian isn't saying; "To infinity and beyond!" in that final image?
Nah, he really only says that when he's wearing the costume........... ::)
-
Hi Folks
Finally got on computer to look at the show pictures. What a great day. I won't say how much home baking I had, but all I can say is I am sure it has helped my back ache, and before anyone says how much I did eat remember friends to have friends in your life is one of the great pleasures we can have, without friends its a very dull place ;) ;D
I was really pleased with my prizes and as gardening and all plants are my first love ( don't tell hubby ) it just is so nice to see them on the benches with other plants, even if you don't win a thing its just nice to take part.
Well done to everyone that put a plant on the bench and thanks to everyone that took the home bakes in. ;D ;D ;D
Stan your pictures are always great and it so nice for everyone that couldn't make the show see what was happening, thanks.
There was a few plants I wouldn't have minded sneaking away with, two were Grahams :o ;D and their was a lovely white cypripedium.
Angie :)
-
I can't believe Mike entered me in section one, I'd never have dared myself. Wasn't sure either was worthy of a place on the bench really, and I'd been breathing on the scilla to try to get it to start blooming, it was only just coming out when I gave it to Pearl to take for me.
Yes, the Dales love your Aberdeen Show, and isn't it nice the children are showing so much interest, it seems last year when they entered and won, they were hooked so to see their progression this year is wonderful. I'll see them when they get back ....

That's about it from my camera, I think... except for some shots of the plant which won the George Forrest Memorial Medal for the best plant in the show.
Daphne calcicola from the Glenrothes Greenfinger himself, Cyril Lafong.... grower of the stars!
Cyril had this plant before the Joint Rock Award Committee too, and gained and Award of Merit.
This is either the Squirrel's 44th or 45th Forrest Medal ( I ran out of fingers and toes to count!)... a world record! Well done Cyril, and many congratulations.
Thanks to Cyril and to all the other members who have entered plants at the Aberdeen Show over our years as Show Secretaries, and to the many hard-working members who have laboured selflessly to ensure that the Aberdeen Show has always been such a great day, with loads of fine plants and matchless camaraderie and fun, for the local group and all our lovely visitors.
Ian and I believe there is no team like ours... and we thank every one of them for their effort and loyalty and thank them all for their good wishes and unexpected words and presentation at the end of the day.
(Ian will show you that later, I hope.)
It's been a great spell for us in the service of the Aberdeen show, as exhibitors, working on the plant stall and as Show Secretaries. We'll miss it, I've no doubt.
-
What a lovely show Maggi. You've done us proud. Thanks for the kiddie pix too, its a joy to see them there. They look so happy....
-
What a beautiful show. Gratulation!
-
Magnificent, 8) 8). I have thoroughly enjoyed this Show ...... by proxy ;D ;D. Thanks to everyone who posted so many small tasters of what must have been a special day.
-
next....
Stan's winning Rhododendron 'Ermine'- just lovely.
The one pan rhodo class... three entries, Stan's, Roma's 'Egret' the small white, and Graham Catlow's vibrant red... he'll tell us the name, I hope...
Maggi,
The Rhodo is 'Maruschka'
-
Maggi,
The Rhodo is 'Maruschka'
Thank you, Graham, I should have remembered that. I love the cheery colour..... one might even say the cheery cherry colour ;)
-
Well! What an incredible Show that was, surely the best in the country for a long time judging from the photos. This thread has been a fitting memorial to the Show's long history and it is sad for those at this end of the world as well as for all its local supporters and visitors that this is the last, for a time at least. But those young girls look like the future for Aberdeen and surrounding districts and when children are encouraged to take part so early, it augers well for alpine showing in the area. Well done to them, their families and all who encourage them.
For me, while the plants are fantastic, I'm always pleased to see the people too and get to know a few more faces, especially this time, posters Graeme and Graham. I was pretty sure that large dog didn't really tell the story. :D
-
I agree Lesley. Lovely selection of plants. The judges must have a very difficult task, but I suppose the expert eye can reduce the difficulty? Well done Angie. Nice to see Karl Heinz.
-
Well you know, it looks a lovely show... and it was... with seven plants being awarded Certificates of Merit in addition to the other prize winners there is no doubting it was full of great plants..... but I can think of shows in the past that would have blown the socks off this one...... and the number of exhibitors is falling, even with some new folks.
I don't know what the answer is.... but something will turn up..........
-
Anthony your Cyps are giving me so much pleasure, thanks for giving me them :-*. Drove past Dunblane yesterday on my way to Glasgow and the sun was shinning and it was a nice 18c, everything was looking so lush with all the rain that we have had. There is some beautiful scenery around Dunblane.
Angie :)
