Need to germinate seeds of Fritillaria frost?

Some do and some do not need frost to germinate. We sow all ours and set them outside in open frames until they germinate and only then do we take them into the alpine house if they germinate very early in the year - in case of late frosts and to make it harder for the slugs to find them.
If they germnate when better weather has arrived  they can mostly stay in a frame.

The seeds must be covered with substrate?

The seeds are sown on the surface of the potting mix and only covered with stone chippings.  (about 1 to 2 cms  deep of the chippings which are circa 6mm in size)
