Title: Rosecarpe Horticultural Society Spring Bulb Show 2012

will be held on
Saturday 21 April and Sunday 22 April (1000-1700hrs)
at Gateshead Leisure Centre, Alexandra Road, Gateshead, NE8 4JA.
This is a major show for Daffodils and Tulips, with a strong representation from the Northern Group of the Daffodil Society.

To give you an idea of the size of the show in 2009 there were over 350 entries, with over 1050 stems of flowers in 51 daffodil and tulip open classes with entries from as far afield as Dundee and South Yorkshire.

The exhibitor, Morris Robinson, of last year's winning Rosecarpe Tulip Open Championship class for 9 blooms/stems also won the Tulip Championship of Great Britain (at Harrogate Show) with 3 vases of 9 tulips (27 blooms in all). On both occasions his winning variety was 'World Peace' a pink/red shading to yellow.

A report of the 2012 show, hopefully, will follow after the event.

The bulb show seems to have come into being to occupy growers and showers in the North East of England in the early part of the year.

I do recommend a visit as visitors are made most welcome, with the committee and well-known Northern growers/breeders (daffodil and tulip) puting themselves out to assist and share knowledge. I was also the recipient of beginner's good fortune.

The show results from the Tulip Classes were:

Sorry no pictures (forgot camera!). Everything was beautifully staged in Gateshead leisure centre and the show was organised professionally with well-printed cards etc. This was a real credit to the show secretary Mr Peter Wilkinson.

I'd seriously recommend checking it out next year - after all it's only 25 minutes further south than Ponteland or Hexham (which are show haunts for Scottish showers/growers).

Yes - I should have advised so.

It was my first time showing daffs/tulips so I was fairly chuffed, particularly against the top showers. The daffodils were something else - with many, many narcissi species on show (as well as all the usual daffs in divisions 1-12). A great show and exceptionally well-organised.

I did half and half: half in wine bottles and the others dry in a sealed box wrapped in paper (and in order to keep the temperature down I enclosed cooling wine sleeves). With all this talk of alcohol anyone would think I was a drinker and yet ironically I'm teetotal!
