Anyone coming down? Usual venue, St Luke's College, Harts Lane, Exeter, EX1 3RD
-
I'm afraid I won't be there to surprise you this year David ! Have fun !! ;D
-
I'd love to come, but I might be a wee bit busy at Hexham. ::)
-
Family commitments this weekend I'm afraid. I would like to go to both of these excellent shows (but not on the same day ... well, not without using air miles anyway)!!! :D
-
Sorry David, Hexham is easier and slightly closer and......there is the promise of bubbly (non alcoholic alas) and cake for the anniversary celebration :o :o
-
Some pictures from Exeter today. Weather cloudy but dry and cooler than of late. Plenty of good stuff on the benches but didn't seem to be the usual Show 'hubbub'. May have been as a result of the fuel situation and a clash with the Cornwall Spring Flower Show and a Plant Heritage 'do' in Somerset. We hardly sold a plant on the member's Plant Stall after 1.30PM.
Hall 1 & 2, very good light.
Daphne 'Collinton Crown' (D. x eschmanni x D. petraea) Raised by Cyril Lafong and Exhibited by Robin White. Farrer (I think, or was told but didn't seen the certificate) and a Certificate of Preliminary Commendation. (whatever that might mean!)
Primula kialensis (a new one on me) First for Peter Summers in Class 101
Hepatica 'Millstream Merlin' First in Class 82 for Audrey Dart
Trillium rivale-grown from seed sown 18/08/2000- First for Lee and Julie Martin in Class 74

Primula 'Doris Payne' First in Class 8 for Jean Morris
-
My, some cracking plants there. I think you are so lucky with all the natural light that comes into the show hall there, David.
Townsendia spathulata 'Cotton Ball' from Dorothy Sample is a beauty.
Methinks a note will need to be sent to the Joint Rock committee etc ... because I think Cyril's Daphne should be a COLINTON with one "l" not two. (It refers to where he lives.)
What a fat pot of Iris suaveolens :D

Primula 'Doris Payne' First in Class 8 for Jean Morris
Super primula... can we be sure that Jean did not embroider the whole thing in 3D ? ;)
-
... and the final ones before the batteries ran out>
A nice Pleonie from our Local Group Treasurer, Maggie Grimbly who was entering her first Show. A First in Class 111 and best Plant in Section C.
Narcissus 'Solveig's Song' First for George Elder in Class 64.
And last, but by no means least Erythronium hendersonii from the ace photographer Jon Evans a First in Class 60
-

Yes, I don't think I mis-read it Maggi. I typed it from an image of the certificate I took, I can't re-check as I've since deleted it.
-
Well done Maggie G. for that debut triumph, a lovely pot of pleione.
'Solveig's Song' is smart.
Well, always a soft spot for a fine Erythronium here... but extra nice to see Jon getting a chance to stage a good plant as well as take agreat picture!

I don't think you mis-read it either, David : I can just about make out the Collinton on the picture.
-
Wonderful images David. Thanks for posting. Did I miss the Best in Show? Was a Farrer awarded?
-

I think that the mis-named Daphne is the Farrer winner, Cliff.
-
Thanks Maggi. I completely missed that. Must be tunnel vision - searching for buttercups. ;D
-
I dunno... thought you had your eyes fixed, Cliff? :-X
I'm rather worried about poor David's batteries running out, too..... none of us getting any younger, I suppose.... ::) ;)

I hear he's needed a jump start for years! ::)

I emailed Cyril for confirmation : the plant is indeed misnamed , it should be 'Colinton Crown'

Spot on, and I like currents too!
-
That really is a remarkable daphne - how an earth does Robin grow them so well? They are not renowned for being easy in pots. Cyril Lafong must be very proud of such a fine cross, certainly somewhat removed from one of its parents petraea! Spring is really in the air in more ways than one with talk of jump starts and currents! AC or DC?

Primula 'Doris Payne' First in Class 8 for Jean Morris
Super primula... can we be sure that Jean did not embroider the whole thing in 3D ? ;)
Doris Payne was a seedling in 2002 that I named after my mother .I did put on another display of embroidery at the show Jean
-
Hello Jean, how nice to hear from you, hope you are well?
An interesting point about the primula being one of your raising and named for your Mother... makes it even more special.
So I was right, it is in fact, "one you made earlier" ;) :)
And you had time for a needlework exhibit too... what a great support to the show.
-
It was a lovely display and had the batteries not gone I would have had a picture of it. I hope Jon has one. Lovely Primula too Jean.
