Title: Early Spring Show 2012 in Harlow
Post by: Luc Gilgemyn on March 04, 2012, 04:46:34 PM
We made a hop with a busload of VRV (Flemish Rock Garden Club) members to Harlow this year : 46 people on the bus !
We had a grand day and for many of our members, it was a first time ever visit to a Show - I can tell you one thing : jaws dropped !!  :D

1) This six pan entry by Bob and Rannveigh Wallis hid the best plant in show
2) Corydalis darwasica - best plant in show was not deemed worthy of a Farrer medal though...  :(
3) This pot of Galanthus "E.A. Bowles" (gosh, what giant flowers !!  :o :o) looked astonishing - an entry by Monksilver Nurseries.
4) This is what the trunk of a bus looks like, when a bunch of belgian and dutch enthousiasts leave the sales area from an AGS show...  ;D

I'll try to post some more pictures later on.

Luc  - Happy hear you had such a successful raid on England.  The bus trunk rather resembles David & Brian's car trunk on a normal day what?

Nobody bought much then, Luc?    ;D

So pleased that you had a wonderful day ... and I wager the organisers were THRILLED to welcome you all!!!

The raid was successful John - but I've never seen David's or Brian's car trunk, so can't compare...  ;D

We just bought a few bits and pieces Cliff...  ;D  ... and not only the organisers looked happy... I did notice some nurserymen (and -women) with broad smiles...  ;D

Here are some images of people and benches (with quite some gaps I must admit... but then, it IS a very difficult season I guess !)

Behave yourself John ;)

Glad you had a good day Luc and the VRV visitors.  I was disappointed not to get there but have had a series of reports from various friends :D

Fantastic!  Proof that you can have a "garden" even if you have only the tiniest space!

Did the bus cross in the tunnel or on a ferry? I wonder a ferry could cope!?????

We had taken no risks Maggi - the tunnel seemed safer...  ;D

Despite the difficult season, there were some quite excellent Dionysia's around...

Sorry I don't have the names of the exhibitors, but the names of Nigel Fuller and Paul and Jill Ranson were definitely present !

1) 3 pan entry
2) Dionysia 'Ewesley legacy'
3) D. curviflora x tapetodes
4) D. "Monika" - looked marvelous and caught some sunrays
5) D. "Tess" also caught my eye

Some more :

1) Crocus tommasinianus 'Ruby Giant'
2) Cyclamen coum f. album
3) Cyclamen persicum
4) Hyacinthella dalmatica
5) Primula allionii seedling - a very striking dark fuchsia coloured clone - much darker than my camera could show..
6) Iberis pruittii candolleana - not at it's peak yet - but a very neat and compact little shrublet.

Maybe more later !  ;)

Looks as though you were all trying to solve our little Balance of Payments problems Luc. Bet the £ shoots up in value when the markets open tomorrow. You could well be in the running to be the second Belgian President of the European Council. Got to be better than the first one ;D

Luc - my wife really liked those tufa plantings just outside the Show Hall, and it gives me hope that my long awaited tufa garden might bear fruit this year! Some lovely plants; I really liked Hyacinthella dalmatica but the highlights for me were Primula 'Arduaine', not a large plant but beautifully presented, and Trillium nivale, just the loveliest of things. I think the nurserymen always like Harlow; it is spring arriving and there is a great atmosphere.

Your Balance of Payments should be ok now David...  ;D ... and a further surge is to be expected at the Kent Show shortly... no busload of belgians then, but some export of John Innes compost (along with more plants) is to be expected on that occasion !!  ;D

Some more goodies from the show now :

1) Colchicum kesselringii
2 and 3) Dionysia termeana caught the attention of the judges !!
4) Eranthis "Guinea Gold"
5) Galanthus "Straffan"
6) Hyacinthella pallens
7) Ipheon sellowianum
8 ) Iris aucheri - quite compact
9) Iris kushakewiczi
10) Iris rosenbachiana "Tovil Dara"

The tufa mini gardens were amazing and quite inspiring Tim... I hope you'll have a go at them too !

The pot of EA Bowles was exhibited by Monksilver nurseries Mark.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the questions Cliff and Ron...  :'( I hope somebody else can.

The Colchicum kesselringii was shown by Lee & Julie Martin. The tufa gardens were not  Dave Philbey's. I think Dave's stepson, photographer extraordinaire Jon Evans who helps him with them would have had a heart attack if Dave had asked him to take that many to one show. I'm pretty sure they were shown by Michael Sullivan from Brentwood who shows in the Novice section and who I think qualified for his Bronze Merit medal but as the show results have not yet been posted I am relying on memory.

I was quite happy with what I found Ron...

Daphne petrea "Tremalzo"
Ranunculus parnassifolius - nuria form (had been on my wanted list for at least 10 years...)
Gentiana depressa
Crocus chrisantus "Sunspot"

went in the trunk of the bus...  :D  ... now all I have to do is try and grow them properly...  ;)

He would have been shot, if he hadn't come up with the goods!

You obviously have your bus drivers well trained Luc. ;D

Alas, at Tabor any plants for sale will remain untouched by New Zealand or Australian hands. :'( Perhaps Angie will let me borrow - and run amok with - her credit card, on her behalf of course. ;D

Angie, alpine gardeners are the same all over the world... wether they're Belgian, Scottish, English, Dutch or NZ'ers, when they see plants... they buy them... ;D

I wouldn't have wanted you to go back to the car Art...  ;D ;)

Trillium nivale, just the loveliest of things. I think the nurserymen always like Harlow; it is spring arriving and there is a great atmosphere.

Not the fullest of benches, perhaps, but I expect Kit and her Team were still pleased with the turnout.

I am just besotted by Trillium nivale.... I think it is  just a gem of a plant.
Looking at the potfull in Tim's picture, I notice a lot of leaves seem to have little yellow spots,( or even holes ?) in them - does anyone have any idea what might cause that?
