I notice that apart from Ron's offer of a lift there has been no mention of the AGS show in Burleigh College on Saturday 10th. March.
With any luck and no bad weather, sick animals or other trauma to prevent us, we shall be going.
-
I'm sure all the usual suspects will be there. Hopefully some pictures from Harlow will appear shortly. I was there but didn't take my camera. Good show but no plant deemed worthy of the Farrer Medal. Best in Show went to a Corydalis sp. I can't remember (it's an age thing). Sections B & C were fairly well populated which was good to see. Maybe by Loughborough I might even have a plant or two worth staging.
-
Looking forward to meeting forum members and lurkers on Saturday. If you recognise me stop me for a chat
-
we will be there. first show of the season
-
I'm taking the guy above in flat cap and sunglasses, and I will be in my red Forumist's sweatshirt. Between us, we should be easily spotted if you want to avoid us! ;D ;D
-
except there will be no flat cap, scarf or coat. I'm travelling light to make way for plants ;D

In which case we have no chance of spotting you. I'd suggest a T-shirt with your name in large letters across thefront and back ;)
-
Martin
Would that be some sort of -Mark-
-
I might be in a pale green jumper and pink shirt
-
That's going to clash with my red jumper.. :-X
-
Martin
Would that be some sort of -Mark-
That's dreadful ::)
-
Well I shall be taking pictures in the raw. Lousy lighting at that venue.
-
Well I shall be taking pictures in the raw.
I hope that doesn't mean what it can mean round here. If it does, they're going to need to turn the heating up.
-
Would that be some sort of -Mark-
would a dirty mark do?
-
Well I shall be taking pictures in the raw.
All I can do is pray for cold weather Eric :P
-
Do you not have a white shirt with green markings on it Mark? ???
-

Don't think Mark plays cricket? ::)
-
No interest in sport :P
-
Looks like there will be a good turnout of forumists at Loughborough on Saturday - I guess that apart from the usual suspects (and Martin without the dummy), I need to look out for a white rooster and a ginger cat. ;).
I think my role will be to carry heavy pots for Jon Evans to photograph, so feel free to come up and say hello/catch the pot as I trip over etc.
-
Not quite sure if I will be in my winter or summer coat yet Peter !! :-\ :-\ :-\

As a rather obvious attempt to gather all the attending forumists in one place for a photo, I intend to take CAKES, which will be available in the cafeteria area at 2pm.
-
See you there ! You've sealed the deal. I'll take the pic if thats OK.
-
Better not overdo it at lunch then :-X
-

Are you one of those cats with thumbs that I saw on TV, then?
-
LOL. I dont know Anne, I never saw that programme :)
-
Seriously thinking about going ,but am I going to get back in time to go to work?am I right in thinking that it does not open until 12 noon?
-
Opens at 9 I think Chas. Everything says 12 to 4 but its just not the case. I think that is the show time after the judges, but I think the whole thing opens at 9. First year we went we missed all the good stuff to buy because we got there for 12! Now we aim to get there for 10 and everything is always in full swing.
-
Hi Ron and Chas, can I just confirm that the show will not be open until after judjing finishes 12 00 officially but may just be a little earlier,The sales room however is open during the morning with a dozen or more trade stalls and well worth taking a bit of time of Chas.I will se you on the members plant table.
-
Thanks for that, Ronm and Tony,We shall definiately make it then :) :)
-
Pottertons Nursery sales area will be open at 7.30am; discount offered to anyone who helps us unload at 7. Please be aware that ELLIE and JACKIE Potterton will be doing the selling, Ellie's adding up is still not the best so further discounts may be available from her.

-
;D ;D I'll bet that Ellie is the toughest salesperson of the lot!! ;)
Hi Tony, I agree its good to get there early and do all the buying, eating, more buying, and more eating!! Then into the show at 12 with no pressure, ;D ;D ;D. See you Saturday.

Sounds as if you will all have fun meeting up on Saturday. Wish I was going. I noticed that Laneside Orchids will be there. I could have treated myself to a few Cypripediums :'( Looking forward to seeing some nice pictures. Can someone take a picture of Laneside Orchids stand and post it here that I can see what I missed.
Angie :)
-
Laneside Orchids :o :o I may stay at home LOL
The weekend is to be warm and in the teens.
For me look for 'yellow', dirty, timberland boots, jeans, green jumper, pink polo shirt and spiked very dark going grey hair. Cant be many like that around ;D
-
Can someone take a picture of Laneside Orchids stand and post it here that I can see what I missed.
At this time of the year, the Laneside stall is often an expanse of pots of......compost. I'll see what I can do though.
-
Peter there will be pictures to show what you are buying. If I was going I would be coming home with something nice.
Enjoy yourselves as Mark said the weather is meant to be nice.
I will be cutting my grass :(
Angie :)
-
Is anyone going to be at Loughborough, Blackpool and Hexham? I'll be at the first and last, but not at Blackpool, and I was thinking of putting one of my narcissus in for the Joint Rock. If anyone is willing to babysit my pot for a couple of weeks please let me know. Thanks.
Cakes made..
-
Just been picked up - its raining
-
Plants picked out, orders trayed up and van loaded ready for an early start. :D
-
Love the bed Rob, can I hire it out for my afternoon nap tomorrow. The van will be empty at that point I presume.
-
Crikey Martin, now there's a thought; we could give up the nursery and rent beds out at shows instead.
p.s. the bed is already in use tomorrow!!! ;)
-
Wouldn't mind hijacking that van ::) ;D
Angie :)
-
What time will you be arriving Anne? ( and Mark) :) :)
-
I'm afraid no Belgian bus making the crossing tomorrow... :'(
Have lots of fun all !! :D
-
Maybe one time Luc we will see you here? Ferry to Hull is very easy.. stay with us and then down to the show??? Maybe next year?
-
Now there's something to keep in mind Ron !! :D
-
Always welcome Luc, stay as long as you like ;D
-
Not with the whole bus I guess... ;D ;D
-
Bring your sleeping bags !! Food and drink is easy, and no neighbours to worry about!! All welcome!! ;D ;D
-
arriving at 9am
-
We are just about to leave. Watch out for a small black car full of hand made Tudor bricks.

I would SO like to see that for myself.......... ???
-
Back now, bricks delivered and small black car full of purchased plants. Or it was until I transferred them to the Greenhouse.
-
Eric, why didn't you let me know you were going I may have been stood next to you!
(Maybe that's why!!) ;D ;D ;D
Anne (aka Pumpkinlover)
sorry I did not take my camera folks- but sure the professional pics will be on here soon.

What? Oh, Anne, you mean you never spotted a black car full of bricks?? :o :-X
-

Hand made Tudor bricks?! There has to be a story behind this. :-X
-
So the first photo from Loughborough ....... is Martin relaxing on my bed in the back of the van. Thank god i didn't take the double!!!! :o
-
I probably stood next to a lot of people at the show. It was crowded and VERY good.
The bricks are simple really. There was a house here in Elizabethan times and the bricks were probably made locally. There are clay pits up the lane and a field called "Brick Kiln field" When that house was knocked down the bricks were reused in three 1804 (ish) houses. These in turn were demolished in the 1950's and the rubble from spread across what is now our garden. So every now and then we find whole Tudor bricks. Our daughter lives in a 13th C. house and they need thin hand made bricks to repair the fabric. We deliver the ones we find.
And so now on to Blackpool! Does that light your lights for you?
-
Fancy that, delivery of Tudor bricks... who says the Forumists are not multi-talented? :D What a wonderful diversity of schemes they are engaged upon. ;D
-
i met more lurkers than forum members.
-

Martin I hope you deserved the rest. Did you empty the van.
Hope you all had a great day, looking forward to see some pictures.
Angie :)
-
Jackie and Ellie emptied the van Angie, no gentlemen in sight; however quite a few turned up immediately they had finished and proceeded to empty the sales tables. :D A very busy show with lots of happy nursery folk by the end.
Lovely morning outside here, blue sky and warm sunshine, just leaving office to start packing my mail orders.
-
Angie, I'd just completed a 20 minute drive and put 2 plants on the show bench so I reckon by 8 am I deserved a bit of a rest until the bacon buttie sales were open :D
-
Rob that's typical, once the job is done the offers come in ;D Really glad to hear that it was busy show for the nurseries. Its hard enough living in these economic times let alone try and run a business.
Martin sounds as if you had an exhausting time ::) ;D hope you enjoyed your bacon buttie. Did your plants do well.
Cant wait to see some photos.
Angie :)
-
So that explains Martin's cryptic comment to me about a photo. The poor lad must have been really tired. :D
-
After a sixteen hour day yesterday, I've just been awoken by a phone call (thank you Mr Newton!) to find glorious sunshine and a lovely spring day. Many photos to work though (including ones of the Lanside Alpines stand, Angie), but they will have to wait a bit. Off outside for some fresh air and gardening therapy. 8)
-
17c at Annes. Lunch outside. Never seen so many lady bugs. All plants bare rooted or in my carry on bag. Great idea to travel light. Plants also being mailed home. A case of Viv whats her name - spend spend spend.
In the car now heading to Harlow. Posting on the move is great.
-
pagea of blether and no pics yet so I thought I would get a few in. Lots of forumists about, even heard an Irish accent so might have been MS but gone from vision by the time I had finished the 'blether' in the pundit group!!!
I will attach pics in no particular order just as they come up in my picture folder, most, but not all, were red sticker jobs and I had to miss out on some because light in hall not conducive to true colours, I expect Peter to sort those out
Androsace ochotensis Geoff Rollinson
Benthamiella patagonica Eric Jarrett who had a very good day including the Farrer Medal...more later
Class 1, the big six had an entry from Paul and Gill Ranson, all Dionysia in pretty large pans and all in really good fettle which is quite an achievement this year as the Dionysia cohort in the south have had a tough time this year. I have tried to get close ups of most of their entry in this class but cannot say that the colours are always right
-
More pictures from the class 1 six pan and the Dionysia
Dinoysia curviflora x tapetodes MK9109-4
Dioysia 'Ewesley Legacy' so must be onbe fromthe Eric Watson era
Dionysia MK99310-27...an f2 hybrid
Dionysia PMK-MK03146-4
The Farrer medal winner by Eric Jarrett, Dionysia termeana...the pundits said it was as good as it could possibly be grown
-
There were a few more Dionysia on display so I will put these up now before doing other plants
Dionysia broides from Derek Pickard...he says his best plants are still coing on....look out Blackpool
Dionysia 'Tess' Bob Fenwick shown in the B section and only getting a 2nd (but a Cert of Merit), was a really good plant taking up the full 19cm pot but took the pic partly cause my new Springer Spaniel is called Tess!
Dionysia Bevere again by the Ransons...it may have been part of class 1
-
What super dionysias...... even allowing for the odd colour from the hall lighting, these are lovely plants.
The yellow of D. termeana is very cheerful, isn't it. Few more of those and the light would have been better! ;)
-
Good grief! What in the name of goodness beat the lovely D. 'Tess' ??? :-\
-
Good question Mags so I will put the winner of the class up next
Corydalis nudicaulis Cert of Merit(I think thats right) by Peter Taggart...I did look at the class quite closely and it is probable that the corydalis is not quite out but I don't remember seeing it at a show...I spoke to the judges after and it won 2 out of 3...nuff said. They are still both cracking good plants
More corydalis seeingt its come into play
Corydalis darwasica shown by Bob & ranveig Wallis
Corydalis sewerzowii by Ivor Betteridge both 'at a distance and closer up...do like this
Corydalis kuznetsovii by Don Peace
-
A few Iridaceae now
Crocus heuffelianus 'Brian Duncan'..shown by me, was a bit miffed ot only got a 3rd, such is life beat by
Iris Willmottiana Ivor Betteridge
Crocus vernus albiflorus Clalre Oates
some Fritillaria
Fritillaria alburyana Geoff Rollinson...this frightened most of the other frits into other classes but I stuck in
Fritillaria tubiformis in the class as I like it. There were other nice frits, all small pan (the large pan class had only two entries). The next two are both shown by the Wallsi clan
Fritillaria carica
Fritillaria crassifolia ssp crassifolia
-

Oh, Ho! That's a cracker too!
-
In the main the Primula allionii classes were down in entry numbers bit there were still nice plants on display although I did not photograph many. Geoff Rollinson had a nice three pan in the larger classes one of which was P A Mary Berry, the other two were P A Joan Hughes (at the back) and P A 'Anna Griffith' still one of the best
Although the saxifragas had quite a decent entry it was generally thought that quality was back on previous years. However Tommy Anderson produced a very large pot with
Saxifraga 'Allendale Grace' which won the Saxifraga Society Salver and a Cert of Merit
Saxifraga x dinninaris shown by Robert Rolfe, full of buzz as usual but nursing a rather nasty gash on the fleshy part of his hand done that morning on his garage door, he's of to Peru on Monday morning for a week so we were all hoping that the wound would be ok...I offered to put a few stitches in but he would have none of it!!
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem' from Ian Kidman
-
Brillant pictures. That Dionysia 'Tess' is just perfection. What a dream.
Angie :)
-
George I was at the venue from 8.45am until 4.30pm-ish
No photos from me. I didnt know how to change the camera light setting to orange sodium lights.
My favourite plants were the perfect spider orchid, two Cymbidiums, a few Frits, mini Narcissus ....
Anyone know who was selling plants opposite Edrom? They have a miniature ash tree I should have bought.
Edrom sold out except for a few Hepaticas and Cyps - well done. I would love to see them come to our show but the committee says no -grrrr
-
I am getting through them, down to 'odds and sods' but this is notmeant to be demeaning to the plants as there are some really nice ones to come. The Narcissus in the main were much fewer in number and mainly 'garden hybrid' types but
Narcissus cyclamineus won the Narcissus Salver for Clare Oates
It would not be a show without Cecelia Coller bringing a van load of wonderful plants and two I photographed were
Iphion sellowianum .... one of several pans of this Cecilia had on display
Hepatica nobilis var japonica...there were very few hepatica on display
-
I am having a bit trouble with the server so I am glad to be down to the last few pictures
Rhododendron leucapsis Harry Roberts...not sure if the spelling is right but its what the label says. I had a dickens of a job getting a picture at all because of the hall lighting but its something like it should be.
Eric Jarrett had a fine day as in addition to winning the Farrer he won the best pan of American with
Trillium nivale ad won the large cushion class with
Benthamiella patagonica and the silver class with
Santolina elegans...as good an example as I have seen, compact dome 24cm accoss
Erics trillium beat my
Viola trinervata for the American prize
-
Saints preserve me.... what I wouldn't do to have a pot of Trillium nivale like that?
Super violet, George. You always do so well with that.
-
Another great show. Thank you George, for pushing aside all the banter and getting to the nitty gritty, remembering perhaps that those who can't attend still like to see the plants. Some gorgeous plants there and especially fine for someone stuck in that deadish time between summer and autumn. Summer's finished and the autumn lot haven't really got going yet.
But well done everyone. I'd have loved to be there to help unload Potterton's van and wouldn't have had to hurry to the sales tables - except to look. :'(
-
Last two I think. Yesterday was a long day, 400 mile round trip, not as long as Mark but long enough and putting up with Kidders in the car for 5 hours will test any man (only joking Ian but I wish you would keep your eyes on the road when doing 90mph instead of smoking with one hand and driving with the other....glad I slept a bit on the way down) As Mark says the nurseries seemed to have a really good day, not many plants left on the tables by the end of the day.
Synthyris renniformis 'dwarf form' in the rare in cultivation class, shown by Brian Burrow
The winning pan of Sedum shown by M & S Lloyd, unfortunately I missed getting the name but it was a blemish free specimen
-
Maggi there was some talk that the Trillium nivale may be a 'hybrid' as some that the flowers sere a bit more rounded in the petal, however I just thought it was a mature plant producing mature sizes flowers as talking to other growers who had nivale on display the drift seemed to be that the bulbs they had were all 'younger'...no doubt your better half will have an opinion!
-
I agree with you, George, and the Boss does too. T. nivale should have voluptous rounded petals... this is a beautiful form and look at the perfect foliage. A cracker!
-
The 'sedum' was Sempervivum calcareum (I think)
-
Thanks Martin, my picture of the sedum suggests its may be a 'clonal' name but will do for me. I realised that I also had taken a picture on my phone and as it was John Richards with his red sticker Callianthemum anemonoides in class 17 ( I think ), quite a tough class, thought it deserved to be seen. Sorry the colour is washed out and I seem to be unable to 'ajust' it it had nice colour on the reverse of the petals. Perhaps Peter will get time tomorrow to post a few photos, its out local group meeting tonight so he will be there, I did not get basck from a day trip away till too late to go....must be getting old
-
It was one of those Semp. source names 'from Gleize'
-
The ones that got away ..
I saw for sale and didnt buy Scilla greilhuberi
I saw for sale, meant to buy, then forgot to buy Fraxinus excelsior Nana
-
What a great show. Lovely to see so many things in full bloom and so early too! Thanks George....
-
Thanks for showing us around George !!!
-
Jon Evans has more pix onthe AGS site.... including some gorgeous Narcissus from Anne Wright 8) 8)
http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//Loughborough+Show+March+/889/?page=2
-
For interest below a few general photographs of the show benches with plenty of well known folk around inspecting the plants.
-
.... and a couple more.
-
I've finally had the opportunity to sort out my photos from Loughborough (and here we are at the Kent show weekend). I posted my plant photos on the AGS website (well it was their show!) so you can use the link that Maggi used earlier:
http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//Loughborough+Show+March+/889/?page=2
However I also promised Angie a picture of the Laneside Alpines stall and Geoff was expecting to be photographed, having been warned by her, so I'll post that here.
First, a close-up of pots of compost (with one or two green bits showing - it must be spring after all)
Second, the stall with the man himself
Thirdly the Aberconwy stall early in the day - there are already some empty spaces, and plenty of people standing there in the classical label reading pose!
-
Thanks Peter, much appreciated ;). Its nice to put a face to the owner of Laneside Orchids. Oh and all those pots of lovely Cypripediums. I showed my hubby the picture and said I wish I had been there, look what I missed. His reply was haven't you got enough. ENOUGH, not such a word ;D
Hope you managed to find something nice for yourself.
The plant sales looks really busy. Looks a really good show.
Away to have a look at AGS website :)
Angie :)
-
Angie, I was very restrained, only bought three. ::)
-
Angie, I was very restrained, only bought three. ::)
Being restrained is only buying one Cypripedium :-X Will be looking forward to see some nice pictures then.
Angie :)
-
Being retrained is buying no Cypripediums!
-
I need to be retrained because i did buy Cyps 8) They are growing fast. "Pot grown" wasnt true for all. Only one had filled its pot with roots.
-
I tried retraining - it doesn't work, some bad habits are impossible to break. ::)
By the way, did the photoshoot/get together over cakes that Anne has planned ever happen? I was too busy taking plant photos after 12 o'clock to take part, but did not see any sign of a gathering as I wandered in and out of the show hall with plants.
-
I am to old to be retrained ;D
Angie :)
-
Only Anne and Diane went for cake. I didnt realise the time had come
-
Only Anne and Diane went for cake.
Why am I not surprised that these two managed to nab the cake? ;D
-

Shucks! I'll believe you... but only because you've got an honest face.
-
It's true! Diane was strong-willed enough to refuse. Nobody else turned up.. :-\
-
Nobody else turned up.. :-\
Shame on them all. :'(
-
I agree with you, George, and the Boss does too. T. nivale should have voluptous rounded petals... this is a beautiful form and look at the perfect foliage. A cracker!
Photos of Trillium nivale in Case and Case show both rounded and long petals. They tried to cross it with T. undulatum but didn't have the results ready for the book. There seems to be surprisingly(?) few hybrids outside the erectum types.
-
Would have liked to join you for the cakes(honest) but had to leave early in order to get 40 winks before my 12hour night shift.....................maybe next year
-
Chas, I think it's a wonder how you manage to get about and hold that job down..... well done you!
