Today I took a quick run up to Bellefield Plant Fair at Angela Jupes garden in Shinrone, between Roscrea and Birr, Co Offaly, one hour and twenty minutes drive up the motorway from here. Unfortunately the snowdrops were finished because of the mild weather and too early for the Daffs and Tulips. Despite a almost flowerless garden it was quite an enjoyable day out with lots of sales tables and the usual soup and cakes.
I am posting few pics which are self explanatory and some showing what was obviously a Nice display of snowdrops a few weeks ago.
-
A few more.
-
And again
-
Last few,plus a pic of a drop I bought
Galanthus kildare
-
It seems incredible to me here in Aberdeen that the snowdrops should be so far past :o
A different country, right enough. A lovely looking place, though with the promise of many flowers still to come. And a good gathering of stall holders to interest the visitors - that's always good!
The garden folly, with its copper onion is rather nice.... a good place for a summer snooze. ;)
Your new 'Kildare' is looking fresh enough, eh?
-
Michael, what a lovely plantfair! It must have been a pleasure to walk through the garden in the sun. The flowerbeds look promissing. It is a joy to see, every time of the year.
Your snowdrop is very nice too.
Lina.

Thanks Maggi, I also got Galanthus nivali blonde Inge. Lady elphinstone, Primrose Warburg, and Sutton court. SHHHH I don't want the Galanthofiles to think I have caught the bug ;D ;D ;D
-
Absolutely, Michael, there's no use exciting them unnecessarily!
The BD and I were just looking at our garden yesterday and thinking there are a helluva lot of snaadreeps there.... but there's no call for hysteria :-X
-
Michael looks great day out. I need some of those gloves in your picture. I bought some at the garden show they were great.
Maggi I did notice you buying an awful lot of snowdrops at the early bulb day or maybe you were just holding them for someone ::) ;D
Angie :)

No snowdrops here in mine or the garden I was in today except for the few in shade
-
Michael it looks like a fair I would have liked to have attended - were the Narcissus named? , Do I see lots of spring plants?
-
On pic 4871 bottom left, are they Pinguicula grandiflora flowering already? :o Can't be.
-
No, they are Primulas.
-
were the Narcissus named
Yes they were.
-
Thank goodness ;D ;D. Thought I'd missed a month or two!!
-
I think I could have persuaded Bob and Margaret to attend. Is it always this weekend?
-
Well, Michael, at one moment today I came up against a man and I said to myself, "that fellow is the image of Michael Campbell" and now I realise that it was you. I should have opened my mouth.
By the way,
Photograph 4866 shows Mary's shoulder in the bottom left.
Photograph 4889 shows her walking with a friend on the path in the garden.
You must have done some damage to the cafe because when we got there it was very scarce pickings indeed. Actually, we settled for a cup of coffee each and headed home.
You obviously missed the talk, the very excellent and brilliant talk on snowdrops which started at noon.
Also met a gentleman who introduced himself to me as a lurker. It took me a few moments to figure out what he meant. He is a lurker here on the SRGC. So, Terry, if you are reading, it is time to join in the chat here.
Also met a very nice man from Scotland, Alex Copland, from Peebles (is that right?). He it is who supplies snowdrops to Cambo Estate for their mail order business, snowdrops in the green etc. He had with him, which he brought in to show me, a beautiful pot of G. nivalis Sandersii ex Lowick. His father it was who found the original three bulbs and from this original finding all have been propagated. He had a very attractive poculiform snowdrop, not sure of its parentage, and a twin-flowered G. 'Magnet' which he very kindly gave me. He says it has been stable for him so I live in hope. He told me he knew our own Ian of the Christie kind very well, done business over many years. Of course, this Ian will be visiting us shortly and speaking in Cork; looking forward to that.
By the way, this Scot is obviously one of the very intelligent Scottish clans as he is moving to Ireland and hopes to be settled in here by June. Now, there's a clever man. He told me he was moving for our good weather. I hope he brings his snowdrops with him.
Met many snowdrop enthusiasts here also and had lots of good chats. It was a very enjoyable day except that I didn't meet Michael.

I am not sure Mark, but usually round this time.
-
Paddy, I was there for the last part of the snowdrop talk, when he mentioned Mark Smyth and Marks tall snowdrop.
-
Oh God, Michael, When "he" mentioned Mark and Mark's Tall. LOL
That "he" was me.
Paddy
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
And you never said, "hello".
I'm going to walk right past you if you are at the AGS in Cabinteely.
LOL, Paddy
-
Paddy, you need to update your avatar. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I will be at Cabinteely but I will be wearing my SRGC T-Shirt,
-
Paddy, I was there for the last part of the snowdrop talk, when he mentioned Mark Smyth and Marks tall snowdrop.
I know this already - just been chatting to Deborah on Facebook
-
Paddy did you show the huge group of Mark's Tall in Bob's garden. He has more than anyone else. I dont know what he is doing to it but it's working. It's great en masse
-
Deborah had a stall just at the door of the lecture room.

Deborah Begley? We know Deborah!
-
Yes.
-
Mark, I'm afraid your 'Mark's Tall' had to do with photographs from my garden. Don't have them from Bob's. Have some from Margaret's, I think. Doing well here but not a big clump yet but healthy and increasing year on year.
Maggi, Photograph 4867, stall to the left of the door; lady with bright blue coat - Deborah is second to left of her, facing camers; standing when she should be sitting down with broken leg - fell in garden, three more weeks in cast.
Do you know the man from Scotland who was there?
Must update my atavar - sometime.
Paddy
-
only 200 miles from Antrim = 2.5 hours @ 80mph 3.3 hours @ 60mph
-
Poor Deborah!
Which man from Scotland would that have been I wonder? There are millions of them, y'know! ;)
-
I see June Blake in the first people photo - short grey hair
-
I am so happy!!
Just ordered the februari issue last week of Gardens Illustrated!
Bellefield is in it.
Lina
-
Mark, motorway all the way bar the last few miles.
-
Maggi,
I am heartbroken that you are not hanging on my every last written word. But, having come to terms with it now, here is a copy of what I wrote earlier so you can read of the Scotsman I met today.
"Also met a very nice man from Scotland, Alex Copland, from Peebles (is that right?). Mark, I didn't see June Blake; did see her brother, Jimi.
Lina, nice article in Gardens Illustrated - I am even mentioned, fame at last.

I am looking forward to read it, Paddy.
I already expected some of the forumists in this magazine. :D
Lina.

Golly, when I get to Tabor next year I hope I recognise Maggi and Angie or I might go the whole Conference without saying a word to them! ??? :o
That looked like a really good day out Michael. I saw some super hats there and nice things to eat and buy. I recognised one man though. I guess he is international. And he (or she) is instantly known from the point of view of the Small(!) nurseryperson. Stands well back from the sales table with tightly folded arms. You just KNOW there will be no exchange of plants and money from that person.
-
Oh. sorry Paddy, I didn't realise you meant THAT Scotsman..... no, I have not had the pleasure to meet Mr Copland.... I don't think so, anyway. :-[
-

No worries, Lesley... I am short, but very slim and beautiful and Angela is taller and slimmer and more beautiful- how could you miss us? ::)
-
Can I hijack the thread to show Bob's group of Mark's Tall?
2008
2009
a giant one standing upright
-
Holy crap, Mark!! :o :o :o :o Just how tall IS that? I have some tall varieties, but that thing is on stilts. :o
-
About 20 inches / 50cm. Anne Wright was with me when it was found. It's her photo. Terrible hair! Me not Anne.
-
Amazing!! Have you grown seedlings from it to see whether the gene is passed on? If so, you could start producing your own super sized version in different forms. 8)
-
Mark - :o Is this a nivalis x plicatus or the reverse? Just a chance seedling in a garden?
johnw
-
John it was found in a garden that dates back to the 1800s. I remember from the 70s that the garden was a maintained woodland garden with loved rock edged paths. The garden has ?millions of nivalis and largest congested groups of Marks Tall. What I dont know is if it is a natural cross or acquired as that
My earliest photos date back to 2002 so I assume I found it just before then
-
That's very reassuring Maggi. Anyway, if I don't see you I'll stand in the middle of the Conference hall and holler. ;D
