Title: Julian alps
Post by: glynnffc on February 13, 2012, 04:18:29 PM
At the end of next month I am going to Slovenia and am looking for any advice about where to go botanising.
I can find very little information about the area and the only flora seems to be unobtainable.
I think I will be too early for any orchids except maybe near the coast, but there should be some early alpines somewhere. Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Glynn

The Julijana Botanical garden might be a good starting point Glynn. I'm sure they will point you in the right direction.

Glynn, forumist Matic Sever is from Ljubjana in Slovenia.
Here are some threads he posted to which might give you some ideas for flower rich areas ( though not perhaps so early in the year  :-\) :

http://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=884.0  Julian Alps  Photos were taken in mountains Lepoca and Trebisca. Around 30 km east of Kanin near village Trenta (river Soca valley).

Also this on that area: http://www.srgc.org.uk/forum/index.php?topic=799.0

Will contact Matic ( he hasn't been around in a while) tio see if he can help.

Hello,

actually I do not think that here are many alpines in flower at the end of February!

Perhaps some Hellebores on sunny slopes, some crocuses in low areas and Galanthus nivalis.

By the way the south eastern alps got plenty of snow the last days!

I fear you may be correct, Herbert.... Slovenia is a popular destination for skiing until March/April is it not?  :-\

Hello,
you never know what you get in March in Slovenia. It can be covered with snow or in "full bloom"  :) In mountains it is usually too cold and all you can find is Helleborus niger on sunny slopes, but it can be spectacular especially for those who come from countries where it doesn't grow. In March with average temperatures you can find some nice plants, especially rich are forests. It depends what would you like to see, because not all plants grow everywhere in Slovenia, but it is not hard to find something interesting because whole country is very rich in flora.
You can contact me and If I'll have time I can show you some interesting places and/or gardens with alpines. My e-mail: matic.sever@gmail.com
Here are some photos taken in March previous year:

Hey, Zvone, you are another Slovenian who knows the mountains...... but I think your  marathons will be too much for our holidaymaker, eh?  8) ;)

Too right ,Maggie I'm going on holiday not for a marathon.
Seriously thank you all for the replies. I am hoping that by the end of March beginning of April all this cold weather will have gone and some sign of spring will be in the air.
I'll have a good luck at all the sites mentioned and let you know how I get on.
If there is a lot of snow I might have to just do a Stephen Fry, travel to the top in a cable car, have a good coffee and something , and then travel back down in the cable car!!
