Title: Mystery plants from Argentina
Post by: Kees Jan on February 05, 2012, 02:31:14 PM
Any idea what on earth this could be? It is not in Campanulaceae is it? Photographed just outside Varvarco, Neuquen province...

The other mystery plant is a shrub of about 1-2m tall. Is it something in Rhamnaceae? Also photographed just outside the village of Varvarco...

The foliage on mystery plant number one looks a little like an Erodium?  ::)

Only a shot in the dark: No. 1 perhaps a Malesherbia species?

Just looked on Chile Flora site and I too think Malesherbia sp. See photo of M. multiflora - the flower buds look very similar, foliage quite rough and hairy, flowers could be similar if central petals brought together as in your photo. Interesting plant!

Thanks, Malesherbia seems to be a good suggestion! Here is another mystery plant, very beautiful, an Oxalis of some sort, photographed in Laguna el Diamante...

added 5th July:
I just received an e-mail from John Watson: the Oxalis posted above is the recently described Oxalis chachahuensis

It may be an overly vigorous one but I do like the speckled flowers and the furry leaves. Very attractive.

The Malesherbia is identified as Malesherbia humilis now!

Edit by maggi: refers to photo 072 in first post
