Title: Oncocyclus irises
Post by: melbee on January 28, 2012, 01:36:00 PM
Hi everyone
I have just started growing Oncocyclus irises .Obviously I have become obsessed with them and want to get more. I have a few species of seeds for swapping if anyone is interested .But ideally I would like to buy a sack load of different varieties  ;D . If anyone could share a few cultivation tips or a site that deals specifically with this kind of Iris I would much appreciate it? I have very little cultivation knowledge as yet so to talk to other growers would be most helpful
Regards
Mel

Suggest you learn on a few for a year or two first. how many Iris have you grown before, what kinds and what is your climate?

I see you are in Cambridgshire a relatively suitable part of the UK. This forum and set of threads is probably the best place you will find for help with oncos. You will probably be able to meet Norman stevens if you get to one of the early AGS spring shows.

Greetings, Mel! I recommend you look into the Aril Society International, http://www.arilsociety.org/index.pl?Intro

The society's yearbooks contain a great wealth of information about many different growing techniques in a range of climates, and there is also an annual seed exchange.

Hi
thanks for your input Tom and Peter .I have just joined the Aril  society as suggested  not had time to investigate much .There is a great deal of information to take in .I have been slowly looking through the threads on this site .
I have grown run of the mill Irises before they are easy but these new ones represent a real challenge .Although consentrating on a couple of plants at a time is a wise suggestion, I have been given a few different varieties and would like to get them growing .
many thanks
Mel

Really impressive collection John. Thanks for bring this to my attention. You have quite a few there which I would love to try. Can we trade seed? (if you get flowers and seed set). PM coming your way.   :)

On the weekend I had my first ever oncocyclus iris bloom, (Dardanus x iberica) x iberica elegantissima, a cross made by Jim Kurtz and seed collected in 2014. I'm thrilled to join the ranks of onco growers and look forward to making more contributions next season.
