Just recently new Crocus species was described from Macedonia (former Yugoslavia) - Crocus jablanicensis - close to cvijicii and veluchensis but white, with white stigma and nude throat. By picture it really resembles white cvijicii, but between cvijicii white specimens are 1-2 per million yellows. Crocus jablanicensis population at locus classicus reported as pure white without yellow ones and with white stigma. Although I suppose that mine white cvijicii has white stigmas, too (can't check my pictures at present as I'm in hospital now). Just the glabrous throat makes the main difference between both (by my opinion - I didn't see living material). Veluchensis has different shape of flower.

Forgot to mention another feature separating new Crocus jablanicensis from Crocus cvijicii - it is much longer stigma - well exceeding anthers as you can see on attached picture. In cvijicii stigma rarely slightly exceeds anthers.

Very special one Janis :)
Pity , Not so special shape :(
Hope it is not to serious that you are in hospital ???
Roland

Yes, hope you are soon back home and in good health Janis.
-
Great to see the crocus but very worrying to hear you are ill, Janis.
Lots of get well wishes from Ian and from me.
-
With me all is OK, thanks for your wishes. I had surgical reatment on palm and now my fingers will move better. Here another picture of new crocus which I found on internet.
Janis
-
Wishing you a quick and successful recovery from the surgery, Janis!
-
Janis , glad to hear that the surgery on your hand was successful , so you will be able to post even more of your most informative and interesting articles in the Forum ,like the new white Crocus . No doubt there are still new species in Turkey waiting to be discovered .
-
I wish you the best outcome for your hand surgery Janis. Our hands are so vitally important. To everyone of course but especially to someone handling bulbs, seeds and plants all the time.
That is a wonderful crocus and looks like something really special to greet the northern Christmas, perhaps with snow. :D
-
What a lovely discovery. Thanks for sharing with us in spite of being in hospital. May I also wish you a speedy recovery.

Yesterday in my postbox came nice parcel with several books from Slovenian - there were two about snowdrops, one about CVyclamens, one about 200th Anniversary of Ljubljana Botanical Garden, but for me most important was book written by Dr. Joze Bavcon - Crocus in Slovenia, 2010. ISBN 978-961-6822-04-6
Front cover and scan of one of inner pages in attached pictures.

It is bilingual - half in Slovenian and other half - identical translation in English. In total 176 pages. English part starts on page 88. Picture captions translated in Slovenian part, too.

Did you buy it online ??
-
No, I got it from author.
Janis

If you want to buy it, you can order it directly from the botanical garden of Ljubljana, see link: http://www.botanicni-vrt.si/content/view/16/30/lang,en/

Some pictures of Crocusses which have been flowering here in the garden during the last couple of weeks:
Crocus korolkowii (in bud)
Crocus laevigatus
Crocus korolkowii 'Lucky Number' (in bud)
and Crocus chrysanthus 'Uschak Orange' (in bud)
-
Way in front of mine Wim, very nice.

It's that difficult time of year when not a single crocus is in flower here and won't be for a couple of months at least. I'm not REALLY looking forward to autumn rains but they will breathe new life. Actually I'd welcome any rain at all here on the lower east coast of the South Island, unlike the north where devastating flooding has occurred.
The page 73 in your book Janis gives a whole new take on the wonder of Crocus vernus doesn't it? Well worth growing numerous seed forms.
-
Leslie, It is not my book! I only informed about it and scanned one page (73rd) for illustration because forms pictured on this page something resembles my famous variety 'CARPATHIAN WONDER'.

Marvellous, Ibrahim! With me started blooming - showed out coloured buds - stridii, punctatus, graveolens, all hittiticus stocks, 2 stocks of atticus.

What a wonderful sight they will all be if only the sun would shine on them. :)

I had not heard of Augis bulbs before this year and decided to buy some Crocus and Frits.
There was a bargain 100 large corms of Crocus korolkowii for €10.00 I gave some to firends and planted the remainder in pots.
The first two shots are of Crocus korolkowii from the SRGC Discussion Weekend in 2010 - 'Kiss of Spring' & 'Dark Throat' The remaining shots are the unnamed from Augis - will certainly be ordering more bulbs this year.
