Title: Paeonia brownii
Post by: Kristl Walek on November 28, 2011, 11:21:01 PM
As I have managed to secure wild-collected seed this year, I am trying to get a better sense of how this species fares in various (non-western North American) gardens.

A friend in Hamburg tells me it needs to be greenhouse-grown there; never survives outdoors. Not sure if this is a matter of hardiness, or too much wet or soil conditions.

Is anyone growing it, where, and how are the plants doing?

Hi Kristl,

It has been hardy here (zone 6b/7 for a number of years.  It has not flowered yet - but then it seems to be very slow growing.

Best,

J.

I have tried this a couple of times and it now seems established on our sand bed (from a plant from Potterton's Nursery). Hasn't flowered so far but I keep my fingers crossed. Our climate is quite mild and I cover the bed with glass lights in the winter. The new shoots are just appearing now so it must be quite vulnerable to severe cold and wet weather.
