It was already mentioned briefly in another topic a couple of months ago, but so that nobody misses it we just want to post this as a reminder.
On Saturday, November 5th, at 10 o'Clock, our VRV (Flemish Rock Garden Society) organizes another meeting and lecture day at the Botanic Gardens of the University of Gent.
The venue :
Plantentuin Universiteit Gent
Karel Lodewijk Ledeganckstraat 35
9000 GENT
(entrance through the garden at the back - follow the signposts in the building)
There will be a plant raffle, plant sales and lots of opportunities to meet and talk to friends !
It's not just "any other" lecture day !!! ;D ;D
We are more than proud to annonce that we have invited the one and only ;D Bulbdespot, Ian Young to enlighten us with no less than 3 of his lectures !
1) High rise and time share
2) The bulb log live
3) Troughs "A fishy tale"
Entrance is free for VRV members and just 2 € for non members. Coffee will be available but please bring your lunch.
We start at 10.00 o'Clock and finish normally at about 15.30 - 16.00 hrs.
We hope to welcome all alpine enthousiasts living within "hopping distance" ::) of Gent as this is (again!) an opportunity NOT TO BE MISSED 8)

Ian is certainly looking forward to seeing many friends and giving you all a great day's entertainment in Gent.... he has his travel plans made....
[attach=1]
he is working hard to be ready: he gets up early.....
[attach=2]
eats well and trains to keep fit....
[attach=3]
and works hard to build his strength for three talks in one day!

That's the spirit Maggi !
We would not have expected less from a BD !! ;)

Ian has left here en route to Belgium..... hope Luc can find him at the airport tonight!

He'll be somewhere with a pint, eating a plate of chips and mayonnaise followed by chocolates, and closely studying the list (an extensive one) of famous Belgians :P ;D

Good to know you've got him.... hope it is the right one!
-
Well... he does have the fancy socks... :-X :-\ ;)
-
That'll be the right fellow, then Luc! I expect he is probably fast asleep by now after his nearly ten hour journey by bus, train, plane and car .... I hope that everyone attending the VRV day tomorrow sleeps well tonight and travels safely to and from the event.
I'll be thinking of you all :D

We have just come home and I enjoy again
All those beautiful moments of this day with Ian and all other friends are back in my mind. We had a wonderful day. Ian is a great speaker and his approach to gardening has stolen my heart .He is an artist with rocks, plants and he makes miniature landscapes as they also occur naturally.
We have learned so much and gained so much inspiration.
Most important lesson, the nature is the best teacher ...
Thank you very much Ian . Also many thanks to Maggi that we could borrow her sympathetic husband for this weekend.
-
There's not much more I can add !
We had one G R E A T day - what a treat it was to have 3 lectures by Ian !! Tremendous !
Now off to bed !

Familiar faces ........spotted in Gent .
Cheers ......

I just got back from the airport in Charleroi where I dropped off our much aclaimed lecturer of last Saturday ! If all's well he should be landing any minute in Edinburgh now !
It' already been said, but I'll gladly repeat what a wonderful time we had over the weekend having Ian amongst us and enjoying his lectures on Saturday. If he's had half as much fun as we had, he will have had a great time as well ! ;) Kris' picture will make great memories ! (and not just of the belgian beer... ;D)
We had a record breaking attendance (even from Holland and England !! :o) and as you can tell from the pictures, the hardest part of the exercise for Ian, only came after his lecture marathon... He prooved to be a worthy Scotsman though...
And Maggi,... I'm not giving away any secrets here, but I don't think there will be need to change the locks... :-X
A great experience it was ! :D :D

I just checked the Edinburgh airport site.... FR7353 BRUSSELS SOUTH LANDED 1135
....so the BD will be home by suppertime.
Luc, I know that Ian will be extremely grateful both for the kind hospitality of you and dear Rita, and for the "extra miles" you have driven around Belgium on his behalf. Charleroi is miles form anywhere, as is usually the case with the airports Ryanair uses (!!) but it does mean cheaper flights and it was really good of you to support your VRV by all these driving duties. You have done them a terrific service as well as for Ian. Thanks!

Familiar faces ........spotted in Gent .
Including some reverse direction Channel-hoppers :o ;)

The "bug" seems to spread, Diane... ;) :P

Glad to have been of help Maggi ! ;)
By the way, when you drive around with Ian in your car, the miles pass very quickly indeed... ;D ;D you'd wish Charleroi were even further away... ;D ;)

I have just arrived back home after my lovely visit to Belgium.
I want to thank all at VRV for making me so welcome, for my very nice presents of chocolates, the fantastic book on the Flemish Belfries - also the meal and beers that I enjoyed as your guest were wonderful - thank you. In fact there are so many beers I could not possibly try them all in a short trip so I will have to come back.
The time I spent walking around Ghent and Bruges was fascinating such buildings I cannot see in Scotland.
Meeting so many old and new friends was a delight - to me the people come before the plants - gardeners all over the world make the nicest friends - like an extended family unit.
To everyone I send my best wishes and thanks but especially to Luc and Rita who were the best hosts I could wish for and looked after me wonderfully - complete with a chaufer driven service to and from the airport.
Also thank you all for your kind comments in the above posts - I enjoyed delivering my talks to such an enthusiastic and attentive audience.
-
We too had a great day at Gent. But when we arrived there in the morning the first thing we saw outside in the garden was a plant that I never saw before:
Mandragora autumnalis
Don't know if many visitors saw it there, so here is a picture.
-
Glad you enjoyed it Ian !!! :D

I missed that one Luit, and I bet, many of us did ! We miss your plant "hawkeye" ;) I suggest that you give us a guided tour through the garden at the next occasion... ;D ;)

Well Luc, I cannot blame you for not seeing this plant. After all you had to deliver your guest at the front door, but we had to park outside the garden and therefore we did see this plant, which was just alongside the path :)
-
Lucky you, not needing a parking ticket as well.... ;D ;D ;D
-
On behalf of the 3 channel hoppers I must add my thanks for a really excellent weekend. A lot of people worked very hard to make it so.
Ian of course was outstanding, but I agree with him that the people are even more important than the plants. It was great meeting friends again.
The walks through Gent and Bruges - two cities I have not had the opportunity to visit before - were a bonus.
And yes we did make it home safely :) ;) ;D :) ;) ;D
-
I hope my little Mandrogora autumnalis flowers in 6 months or a bit less. It should be big enough by now. :) The M. officinalis, seed from a kind Forumist are doing really well.
I only know Bruges in the 15th century, from the wonderful books of Dorothy Dunnett.

Arthur, that's nice to hear, it's easier than finding a B&B in Wijnendale, isn't it ;) ;) ;D

Lesley,
you're always more than welcome to visit Bruges...I would love to give you a tour around the city and the chocolate museum. ;)

For some pictures from Bruges check out this week's Bulb log if you have not done so already.

It has been our great honour to be invited to present the next series of lectures to the VRV in Ghent on Saturday 17th November 2012 and, in anticipation of this, we spotted the attached promotion blurb for the event on the web:- http://www.tuinagenda.be/events/index.cfm?fuseaction=eventsfiche&ag_id=408 (http://www.tuinagenda.be/events/index.cfm?fuseaction=eventsfiche&ag_id=408)
With great interest (and a total lack of language skills), I filtered the message through a Google translator and the result is printed below. Please don't eat whilst perusing, choking could ensue!!! LOL.
-
I can assure every reader, that the text in Dutch is far better than the Google translation.... ;D
There's no mentioning of "canned AGS shows"... :o :o :o or Cliff's honor being "violated" ... :-X
It comes to this, that we (the VRV) are very happy to have Cliff and JohnyD come over to entertain us with their lectures... ;D

John and Clare and Sue and I are back from our wonderful weekend in Gent, where we were shown tremendous hospitality, a very warm welcome and such pleasing responses to our three presentations. VRV are a hugely enthusiastic organisation and it was a great pleasure to meet old friends, both from the forums and from past encounters in person, and to greet a host of new friends from Belgium and the Netherlands.
Many thanks to you all for your kind assistance and support and special thanks to Luc, Kris, Wim and Danny (and, of course, John and Clare) for your warmth and humour.
A few images from our visit ...

Thank you for the pictures and the kind words Cliff ! A better compliment is hardly possible ! For us it is also a great motivation to go on this way .
As you know we are a smal group , but I never mind about that . I rather hope we keep going for quality rather then only for quantity ... And that's why we ask you to give this lectures .....As we told you before we where extremely happy with your performance and the lectures as wel. And not only yours but also John's lecture. Again this was a big day in our short history .
After Arthur and Ian you deserve our VRV-star to.
It was great to ,to have the opportunity to speak and see each otter after the lectures and drink a beer and have dinner together with some other friends . Not only plants are important but even more al the people , the warmth and yes oh yes ...humour must be always our best neighbour ....
-
It was indeed a marvellous show of splendid pictures of beautiful alpines and not only these from the Dolomites, but also many other jewels of the alpine world.
Pictures of outstanding quality and many great ideas were presented in a mostly humourous way, which made this a great day.
I have only been a member of the VRV for almost a year, but I couldn't be without it.
This last thing is what I always tell my wife too ..... ;D
-
Good to hear you all got back safely Cliff !
So glad you had a good time with us and for sure, we were very happy to have you all.
The lectures were superb and will long be remembered by all the attendants. I'd like to point out that the picture showing the hall gives a wrong impression about the audience... it was taken during the break, when a lot of visitors had left for a sanitary stop.. ;D We were very happy with the number of people attending ! :D :D
And as Kris already pointed out : we're so happy to have made some new friends !!
-
................. I'd like to point out that the picture showing the hall gives a wrong impression about the audience... it was taken during the break, when a lot of visitors had left for a sanitary stop.. ;D ..........................
It's an age thing Luc and seems to happen particularly when quantities of good beer have been drunk! ;D
-
;D They are a very young group, David ... but they DO like their beer!!! (Thank goodness). ;D ;D ;D
Many thanks Luc.
