This plant is from Biokova (Croatia). Does anybody know the name?

A beautiful picture, Bjarne.
Carlina vulgaris perhaps?

Beautiful photo Bjarne. I agree with the others that it's likely a Carlina. Any chance of a closer view?

I'm quite sure it can't be anything else than a Carlina species. I would say Carlina acaulis, which, despite its name, quite often has a rather tall stem.

Or quite possibly some alien - and very agressive, looking at those spikes - craft from outer space, landed in Croatia and will soon attempt to subdue the populaton with smaller, detachable spikes.

Well, I wouldn't like to sit on it! I agree, probably a Carlina. Superb photograph.
