Title: Two flowers from the Ardèche department of France
Post by: t5247rb on August 07, 2011, 04:21:38 PM
Hello, my flower identification skills are getting rusty.  Got two flowers I need help with.

The first I'm wondering if it is a Saxifrage or in the Carnation family.  Tell me if I'm way off.  Then I'm having a hard time identifying it in either family.  The flower was found along a dry roadside slope at 400m on April 22 of this year.

The second was found on the same roadside at the same elevation and day.  I'm pretty sure it's a Brassaceae but the leaves are very fine almost like hairs.

Thanks for your help as always.
Rob.

First is a mossy saxifrage Rob.  Not sure about the yellow one.

Interesting, I think when you say mossy saxifrage you mean saxifraga hypnoides.  I've looked at photos on the net and I agree that it looks like hypnoides which is also referred to as mossy saxifrage.  However, I have seen saxifraga bryoides also called mossy saxifrage.  I wonder if there is a different English name for saxifraga bryoides.

I'll take a look in my book next time I'm thinking, its not handy here.  Do you have Malcolm's tome?

First is Sax. hynoides I reckon.
Confusing that Sax. bryoides is also called mossy saxifrage in English.... excellent example of why it's better to stick with the latin!

Not sure what the crucifer might be.... I find them almost as bad as snowdrops........ ;)

Yes I use this web site quite a lot also.  When I look at the photo of biscutella I don't see these fine hair like leaves that I found on the flower in my photo.

An alternative might be Coincya cheiranthos (Rhynchosinapis cheiranthos)?
There is a ssp. montana.
