Hans,

The "standard" Aspidistra (no idea what species it is) that we get here in Australia is almost always in flower when I check.  Unlike yours, which sets the flowers on a small stem, with mine the flower emerges it's point to the surface then opens just at ground level.  The flower almost reminds me of balsa wood in it's consistency.  Pretty much every time I have checked it (which isn't often, but has been at various times of year) there has been at least one flower sitting on the pot surface.  Everyone says that Aspidistra don't flower, and never believe me when I tell them that they do.  ;D  Good to see yours flowering..... it's definitely more impressive than the ones on mine.  I must check and see whether mine has flowers at present, just to add a pic of it here as well for comparison purposes.

Thanks for showing us.

Paul ,

the standard Aspidistra are mostly Aspidistra elatior ( and some cultivars of these )- all other species are difficould to get and really very few nurseries sells it ...it is a hard and stony way to build up a collection !

I had in winter also some flowers of A.elatior  ( and the same flowers on A. elatior variegatet ) -in spring a other species has flowered ( I dont remeber )

My opinion is the reason for this name ( A.lateralis ) that the flowers comes not from the ground .

I hope to have later more and other flowers to share it with all of you.

What a super flower... all the aspidistra flowers I know are so dark brown as to be almost invisible.

Thank you Maggi + Peter  :)

This flower has a diameter of 3,0 cm ...so really not invisible  ;D

Maggi - I think you mean A.elatior ...they are the common
In last years a lot of very pretty Aspidistra was found in Vietnam and other countries - but they are pretty rare ...

Has anyone tried growing Aspidistra outside in a winter cold climate? What works?

leafy conditions in shade, they love it especially when they get summer rain. Little snails chew patterns in the leaves so that the plants always look a mess. I have an  A. elatior under a green house bench.  The green house is not fully glazed and is not heated. Last spring I thought it was dead but it has grown a new set of leaves over the summer. I did loose a couple of other Aspidistra species in there though. There were night time lows of -18 C and frozen for most of last winter

I recall a big potful left outside a farm bungalow near Durham some years ago. It stood neglected for some years and did just fine.
