Title: Didymophysa vesicaria??
Post by: Lori S. on June 11, 2011, 05:35:36 PM
Hi, could you help me with an ID please?
I grew this plant from Holubec's seed described as follows:  Didymophysa vesicaria - "China: Beima Shan, Yunnan, 4800m, limestone scree, small caespitose plant, 8cm high, white to pink flowers in terminal inflorescence, rounded inflated siliques, 15mm wide; 2008 seed."

The plant has been absolutely delightful and extremely long-blooming, but I have not been able to find a reference to that name, and am curious if it's correct.
Thanks.
Lori

Lori, this has been listed in the AGS seedlist, so perhaps Diane Clement will be able to shed some light on it?
It's not one I know but it's cute!

How's your Latin?
Not so good as I would like.  ;)
Thank you for the references.  It seems its (the genus, that is) classification is in flux!
The Plant List refers only to D. aucheri and D. fedtschenkoana.
Info on the former seems to suggest it's a plant of Turkey, rather than of China (assuming the entire range is shown):

http://euromed.luomus.fi/euromed_map.php?taxon=295863&size=medium

eFlora brings up only this one,
Didymophysa fedtschenkoana:
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=5&taxon_id=250063615
I guess I'll have to get out the hand lens and see if it matches.

Edit:  Well, I don't think it's D. fedtschenkoana if its flowers are supposed to be only 3mm across!  The plant in question is quite showy.

perhaps Diane Clement will be able to shed some light on it?

and perhaps she will be utterly useless on the matter ::)  On my database, my name reference is "Holubec" which was the source of the seed on the AGS 2007/08 list.  I did wonder if it a synonym but any likely candidates are neither compact nor white flowers, as Lori's.  Coluteocarpus/Alyssum vesicaria seemed a likely synonym but it's from Turkey, not China.  Flora of China doesn't list this genus at all.

It is certainly very cute as MAggi says and is obviously happy with you Lori. :)

It does look like it!  I'll have to hunt down more pictures, and a description if possible of Braya linearis, to check it out further.
Thanks to everyone for pondering it and especially to Arisaema!
