Title: Meconopsis pink perennial hybrid
Post by: Roma on June 10, 2011, 10:13:19 PM
I grew this from SRGC seed sown in January 2009.  I have three strong plants but the colour is a big disappointment.  It is not even a good blue.
The second picture is one I've had a long time and call betonicifolia lilac form.  It is pinker than the supposed pink form

Well forgive me, but I rather like them - both.

I like them both also Roma, but if you are interested in true blue I understand you have been disappointed  ;)

Well, what makes M.betonicifolia and allied so breathtaking? Its unbelievable blue of course. If it wasn't so blue, we would just want it to be somehow so blue.
These are just colors that we so often find in any other plant species, in my eyes of course  ::)

I did not expect a good blue from the seed but if it was 'Pink perennial hybrid' I would have expected the colour to be nearer pink.
It looks better now after some rain and has recovered from the wind.

Roma,
obviously you needed to add water! ;D
Since we can't grow any of them here I think they all look wonderful!
cheers

It seems that those we use to call betonicifolia are in reality bailieyii, The true betonicifolia is not in general cultivation (or at all).
They come in three major color variations: blue, white called 'alba´and a lilac form called 'Henshol Violet'. They tend to come true from seed but seed that is available seems quite often to be a mixed lot.
The color as shown in your pictures seems much lighter than 'Henshol Violet' and also bluer. I wonder if your pictures come out right on my screen. A real hybrid would be expected to come out variably not three similar. If the colour came out right in your pictures, it is a form that is new to me and I would appreciate a few seeds when the time comes. I cannot offer pink seed in exchange only blue white and 'henshol violet'.
I must admit that I have never heard about a truly pink "betonicifolila" so I googled and the only reference I found was at 'findmeplants.CO.UK' including a picture that is obviously photoshopped to become pink (The orange yellow pollen is too reddish). The reliability of this site seems for various reasons to be limited.
I find that blue meconopsis colour can change a little from year to year; Especially so M grandis but the aberrations tend to go towards darker shades not towards pink.
Has anyone else grown - or seen - a pink "betonicifolia" ??

Only one survivor from 3 originals.  This year the flowers are pinker but not what I would call pink.  They are closer in colour this year to the ones I call 'lilac' which I have had for many years.  With the weather being so awful I did not get many pics.  So many things to do when the rain stops.

It still looks surprisingly pink to me. The habitus is also not the typical baileyii. A hybrid between henshol violet and albe could perhaps produce this result. I would appreciate any surplus seeds. If you really want Tall blue poppies, I suggest 'xLingholm'. I can send you seed if you want when the time comes.
Cheers
