Details of a holiday taken in Potes, Picos de Europa, northern Spain by John and Clare Dower and Sue and Cliff Booker from 22nd May 2011. Marked by sunny skies, very occasional showers and a truly splendid flora this holiday inspired countless photographs and many of these will be posted on these pages when time and tide allow.
Lizard orchids pictured in the Picos de Europa National Park in Northern Spain this week. At the hotel in Potes at the moment and starting to download another 340 images captured today of serapias, dactylorhizas, gymnadenias, orchis, ophrys, etc, etc, in ABUNDANCE.
2200 images taken in nine days ... the weather and flowers have been magnificent.

Now that's what I call trying ;D

Anyone care to make a reckoning of what that would have cost Cliff in money for film and processing? :o :o

Crikey!

We have never encountered a serapias meadow like this ...
-
That is spectacular :o, I was excited when I found two on Majorca several years ago.
-
Cliff love that lizard orchid. 2200 images taken :o hope we will get to see plenty more delights like the ones that you have already showed.
Angie :)

Were they all the same species Cliff?
-
This particular meadow was vast and contained thousands of serapias (all of which appeared to be the beautiful Serapias cordigera), many hundreds of the Pyramidal Orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis) in a range of hues, dactylorhizas and gymnadenias in abundance and, or so it appears, just one little Bee Orchid. See below.
There were four sets of eyes scouring the meadow for at least an hour and only one Bee Orchid was espied. That doesn't, of course, mean that there weren't many others! :D

Must have been an amazing experience? 8)

I thought I'd move Cliff's pictures from Steve's Suffolk thread ..... so here they are in this new location. :)
-
Wonderful pictures Cliff. How many did Sue take, is she catching you up ;D
-
While we wait for Cliffs vastly superior pics, here are a few shots of orchids taken during a simply great break in the Picos de Europa.
Clare and I have been there many times since 1994 and never seen quite such a range of great flowers.
Clare loved the Gentians but I think it was the orchids which won the day - from the first day to the last.
In no particular order - and a distinct shortage of labels.....
-
Oops - got one twice there!!
-
and more.....
-
and finally. ;D
-
Smashing series of shots John ...
Just one more from me this evening ... perhaps Maggi might prefer us to post these in the special 'topic' she kindly created?

Johnny, Clare, Sue and Cliff.... thanks so much for sharing your obviously very successful trip with us. I bet Clare was not too far off the mark with her favourites the gentians, which I imagine were gorgeous... but the sheer range of these orchids is mouthwatering. Super photos too.
I can move the posts across for you.......( and get t rid of the "extra"pic ;) )
Picos orchids now all here.... feel free to start a more general "Picos" thread inthe Trips and Travel Section for other plants etc.... we can always post links to here. :)
-
Johnny you are such a tease showing small photos :'(
-
Some of J's pix may be small... but they're clear. 8) I like 'em!
-
Wonderful pictures Cliff. How many did Sue take, is she catching you up ;D
Sorry for the delay Shelagh ... Sue took over 300 shots in the nine days, but all hers were in focus! :D :D

We were based at the beautiful Hotel Casa Cayo in the very heart of the town of Potes and we couldn't have been looked after more royally. This family run hotel (established in 1936) was clean and inviting and the staff couldn't have been more friendly or attentive.
We had heard fisherman's tales about the size of the gin and tonics, but this particular angler was telling nothing but the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. After long days in the mountains and meadows it was wonderful to partake of hot showers, excellent food and AMPLE alcohol in such splendid surroundings.

OK Mark - perhaps these will be better sized.
Just a sequence of pics in no particular order.
The Picos de Europa is a truly comfortable place to visit, and requires a lot of pics to do it justice. (Look at the number Cliff took!)
