Title: Acer emenovii
Post by: Ulla Hansson on May 30, 2011, 02:15:32 PM
Earlier this spring I bought a small plant, the label says Acer emenovii, with variegated leaves. I can not find any information on this plant, so my question, is there any plant with that name or is the label wrong written?

I think we need one of our Russian friends to help on this one, Ulla... I think the name sounds to have the link of a Russian botanist, maybe?

Have heard of this plant from Tien Shan, I think.  :-\ or maybe A. semenovii??

Sorry, just noticed Maggi already suggested semenovii.

Thank you for help with identification. I bought the little plant in spring when I was in Berlin on the big spring market. There were two plants in one pot one with green leaves and one with variegated.

Maggi, you have a good ear for Russian surnames, even without the inicial letter. Semenov is a typical Russian family name derived from Semen which is the Russian variant for Simon. The plant is named after the Russian botanist, geographer and public figure who explored Tien Shan in the middle of the 19th century and later organised expeditions to Central Asia.
