Title: Colchicum 'seeds'?
Post by: robg on May 22, 2011, 10:23:51 AM
This is an 'excuse my ignorance please' query.

I grew some colchicums from seed some years back (I'll need to check my records on what variety), and they have flowered well for several years.  The spring growth has been particularly vigorous this year and I'm seeing in the centre of the leaf structure what look like seed pods - correct ?  Or have I planted something else on the same spot and this is something totally different with a large bud (quite possible knowing my gardening!).

You were quite correct in your assumption, rob... those are the seed pods.

I had almost the same question today at the Beechgrove Potting Shed: A lady was tidying the dead leaves on her Crocus and noticed what she thought looked like buds, just appearing at ground level. She was intrigued to learn those were seed heads and she is now looking forward to self-sown increase in her crocus over time.

That being said, I cannot say the we have noticed much in the way of self-sown seedlings from our Colchicums, in spite of fat pods!  :-\

Rob:

The Colchicum has its ovary below soil level.  After fertilization is completed and with spring growth the seed containing capsule is thrust upward.

It will ripen and dry releasing the seeds.

Many thanks, everyone.  Logical really in light of their late flowering.

Rob:

That's the thing about these bulbous fellows (gals).  They are loaded with evolutionary adaptations to varying environmental challenges. I find it amazing as one learns the different things that they are capable of.

What I would like to know is how a slug can munch on Colchicum leaves and not  meet their maker  with massive doses of Colchicine
