The Farrer Medal plant of Robin Pickering, Cypripedium Gisela. The plant had many many more flowers on it, but for once I thought a close up was in order.
-
Thanks Eric - you must have got home quicker than me (Sue's extended and expensive visit to the huge Marks and Spencers store delayed me by at least an hour). Congratulations to Robin on his first Farrer Medal for his super plant of Cypripedium 'Gisela'.
Many thanks to Show Secretary; Jim Magnall and his team on another excellent show.
ROBIN PICKERING from GOOLE with Cypripedium 'Gisela'

What a superb plant and a happy exhibitor! Congratulations to Robin on his first but I'm sure not last, Farrer.
-
Naturally, Robin was delighted with his Farrer Medal success, but equally happy on the day was one Fermi de Sousa from Australia who scooped the highly prestigious Pudsey Pig award for 2011. Beating off thirty three other ravenous contestants (including at least five past winners and several potential champions in the making) Mr de Sousa chomped his way through a sizeable starter, an enormous main course and a cholesterol rich dessert which would have been followed by three or four more courses if the pub hadn't run out of food.
Chief judge; John 'The Hulk' Dower selected efforts by Tony Lee and Peter Farkasch as worthy of Certificates of Merit (in the shape of perfectly formed fairy cakes made by the fair hands of Mandy McLoughlin), but there could only be one winner and the jubilant Fermi did a celebration lap of the pub before collapsing to his chair clutching the trophy to his beating chest.
I have images of all the contestants at their troughs (and their meal choices), but these may have to wait until the Settlers and Rennies have brought instant relief and the G & T's have been iced and lemoned.
For those of a nervous disposition please look away now ...

I'm happy that they went to went to some good homes. I've already seen that Angie has done well with two of mine. 8)

I see Ron hasn't lost his appetite!!!!
Where was the pub? As a past PP winner, those plates sure looked half empty to me but I must say Ann's plate looks VERY tempting at this time of the morning. And what about a photo of Fermi's plate.
Thanks for the pics Cliff...good to see so many 'old' friends
-
I think they lack some good class competition, unless the plates we saw were only starters ;D
-
Moderation in all things, folks - these are hard times!
Many had partaken of the bacon butties at the show and some consumed three courses at the event (held at a pub in the centre of Wilmslow). Not the heady days of your impressive victory Alan or the gargantuan meals of the original Owl at Rodley, but at least we could walk to this venue from the show hall and crawl back!
-
No more PPs for me Cliff....if it ain't green and healthy Sherba won't let me eat it.....neither will my digestive system....but that gammon would have gone down nicely between two pieces of bread....unless of course it was chicken and you're still not seeing colors correctly :)

I know purple when I see it Mr G.!!! :D
The Pudsey Pig virus caught up with several competitors ...
Martin, Carol and Diane all afflicted.
-
Other tables showed a little more decorum ...
-
The desserts sorted the men from the boys ...
That's all folks!!!!
-
Great pics Cliff - and everyone smiling!
As most of you know by now, there is only one rule at the PP comp. - there are no rules - which can sometimes mean prizes going to winners for other reasons than a huge plateful cleared.
However, not only did our latest winner travel an awful long way simply to take part, he also demolished a starter, main course AND pudding. A worthy winner - Fermi da Sousa. :D
Well done Fermi, and great to met you and Will.
This forum really does work.
JohnnyD
p.s. Did you notice someone still wearing his 'I am a forumist' badge? At an AGS event too. :o

Quite shocking behaviour going on, I see..... I spotted Sue Booker with a large SALAD on her plate!! :o

I noticed that too Maggi...as you say, "quite shocking behaviour" from Mrs B.
But didn't those steak puddings look good? Try finding one of those over here!!!
-
It ALL looked good to me, Alan... the food, the plants.... just a perfect day out at a grand show... with lots of friends... what could be nicer? 8)
-
Oh! There were plants ALSO were there Maggi? Trust me to concentrate on the food aspect ;D
Only joking, the plants were fabulous. Just loved that cyp.
-
"But didn't those steak puddings look good?"
They were Alan, they were. ;D ;D ;D

I think we're being tricked! According to Cliff's file names, and I quote, "JohnDower small". I wonder how far JD can be construed as "small"? :P If my old mum could see that false looking steak and kidney pud she'd turn in her grave ;D
Whatever, it's nice to see some of the Lancies get a square meal down them, such a change from gruel!
-
It certainly can be 'gruelling' David.

I would like to thank all of the East Lancs group for organising this excellent bit of fun, although it was the East Cheshire show,(new venue)it is the East Lancs members that make this event happen Brian and Shelagh for finding and booking the new venue, for 20(could 33 be a record ?) John for judjing and Cliff for the wonderfull picture commentary, thanks folks.

No Tony - but 34 certainly was.

I must say that the mass exodus which we witnessed whilst eating our Smoked Salmon sandwiches in the car, was a fearsome sight. However, it did leave plenty of room in the Hall for taking photographs without having to elbow people out of the way. Why do Judges and Exhibitors ALWAYS choose to stand and talk about almost everything under the sun, right where the aisles are their most narrow? Do they do this at Scottish shows or is it a purely English thing to do?

Ian remarked that the lucky keeper of that hostelry must have thought all his christmases had come at once ;D

In Scotland EVERYONE chooses those narrow spots to stand and chat, Eric! ::) :-X
-
I too Maggi was very surprised to see that SALAD is an option on the Pudsey Pig menu. Surely a miscalculation. And like you David, I was ASTOUNDED to see the word "small" attached to all of Cliff's file names. Lord knows what "LARGE" would be like. ;D
-
Not all is as it seems.
I can tell you that one of the contestants who had salad had it as an accompaniment to two large chunks of chicken (chicken salad you see!), two large pieces of garlic bread and a substantial bowl of chips!

... And Mr N. ... I think you should apologise for likening my old mate JohnnyD to a 'false looking steak and kidney pud'! Jam roly-poly I will accept, but not a 'false looking pud' That's no falsie is it mate? ;D

What cracking plants... every bit as good as lunch!
-
I see from a rather belated look at the AGS site that Martin R had the most points in the Open section, well done indeed....amazing what all those Lewisias can do to a points score.
Also many congrats to the Farrer for Robin Pickering...I assume is the same plant that he had at Cleveland where I thought was a fantastic potful but could not go up for the premier award as was placed second behind a C calceolus...I am aware there was considerable discussion among the judges who judged the class and two went for the the species plant and not the hybrid...its the way showing goes sometimes....I am glad that Robins specimen held on for another week to get its full credit.
-
Very nice Lewisia rediviva x 'Little Plum.' That would be a distnct possibility here. :)
-
Um good plant!
-
Thanks George, although I think I may have come close to setting a record for the aggregate trophy won with the least number of points ::)
-
This has taken a long time, mainly because I have actually been gardening!
