Title: AGS Cleveland Show 2011
Post by: veteran vet on April 24, 2011, 10:41:01 AM
Stockton on Tees was basking in hot sunshine nearly all day...most unusual for this show as I have been there on some very cold Easter Saturdays. As John Richards said at the start of prize giving it was a May show in April. Norma Pagdin had been slightly worried as to level of entries but the benches were awash with colour and plants of excellent quality, the only classes that were virtually non existent were European primulas otherwise the classes were well supported.
The Farrer Medal went to an old hand at winning Farrers, Geoff Rollinson with a pan of Androsace cylindica x hirtella he had raised from seed...pan size approx 25cm to give an idea of scale
Another androsace not so often seen now was
Androsace muscoidea longiscapa shown by Ian Kidman

Fritllaria epirotica....George Young...had a post show mating session with one shown by Robert Rolfe! For interest of the bulb despot I did show a yellow form of F epirotica in the rare in cultivation class which appeared last year in a pot of normal epirotica. Robert R had seen this once in the wild many years ago when out with Jim Archibald
Dodecatheon clevelandii alba...Jim Watson, best pan Primulacae in Intermediate
Lewisia cotyledon...Barry Winter...a massive pan, part of his large 6 entry. Also in this class Barry had

Of course George has neglected to mention that he had a particularly successful day winning both large and small 6 pans and the open aggregate. Well done!

last one of mine I have a pic for
Townsendia condensata....for me this has always been an 'annual' till this particular plant produced 4 side rosettes this spring and flowered, really needs sun to open...I left last years flower untouched in the middle as did not want to 'huff' the plant
Now for plants from other folk...I did take a few of others plants
Campanula bellidifolia .....B & S Smethurst
Cassiope 'Arctic Fox'...Lionel Clarkson
Corydalis rupestris...R & S johnson...the picture does not do the plant justice, was a worthy winner in a strong class
Rhododendron sargentianum ....Dave Mountford...a Certificate of Merit job

Some outstanders there George. Particularly like the yellow I. barnumae x paradoxa and Helichrysym sessiloides. Judging from the notes it seems I can look forward to Allium mirum flowering (from very old Furse seed I believe) when I am 82. Some germinated last year!

Last few.  What a great show it was.  Had a wonderful time, sunny day, too warm (how can that be in April?) too many cakes, hot cross buns were yummy as usual, and this show certainly has the best lighting of any of them for taking photos.  Was helped by the sunshine of course.

they're home made ones Angie, they do it every year as their show is on the Saturday of Easter weekend.  They are delicious and exhibitors get a free one with their coffee, such a nice idea...

Good luck to all the exhibitors and visitors attending the Cleveland show in Fairfield, Stockport on Tees TS18 5AJ tomorrow -  hope the weather is kind to you! The forecast looks a bit changeable.  :-X

We'll be thinking of sadly lost friends from the area -  Jack Brownless in particular - I expect the show is not the same without him.  :'(
