Hakone,
A violet for sure - one of the group related to Viola violacea (section Adnatae).

You don't need to go to North America - it grows wild here in Norway, although it's rare!

I was in the Limerick market this morning and one stall had a nice stand of a perennials labeled, CROWN OF SNOW.
I asked the woman in attendance did she have the botanical name as I didn't know what it was by that name, she called the husband who informed that the botanical name was OBEDIENCE PLANT ::) ::) ::).
Looked like a white form of Sidalcea or Salvia but there was no hairs on the leaves and the flowers were not open and only had a hint of white showing.
I should know what it is but my memory fails me. Does anyone know from the pet names what they are?.

I remember this from a Potting Shed question a year or d so ago... I'd never heard  those names so I had to go searching for them, I think I found one in Phillips and Rix, but I'm not sure.... Physostegia virginiana... its got longer flowers ( more tubular) than a Sidalcea, hasn't it?

Thanks Maggi. 50 years since I have grown that one and I knew I should have remembered it.
