Just arrived home from another excellent AGS North Midland Show at Chesterfield. Entries and exhibitor numbers were certainly down on previous years, but there was colour and interest throughout the hall.
Many congratulations to John Savage and his team on another attractive Society event.
The Farrer Medal, a super pan of the brilliant white Draba ossetica, was exhibited by Frank and Barbara Hoyle.
Further images will follow later.

That is a super Draba.... no wonder the Hoyles are looking so happy. 8) They must be very pleased with such a good plant.
Well done!
-
A well deserved Farrer if you ask me ! :o :o

Will add a few pictures taken at Chesterfield yesterday. Although there were fewer total plants on the benches this year the quality was as high as ever...bythe way Cliff Fritillaria kotschyana was not shown by me...was Don Peace I think...he had some fantastic frits on display however as they are difficult to photograph I did not take too many
Not a big plant but is one of my favourites, unfortunately lost mine but
Alkanna aucheriana shown by Ivor Betteridge reminds me of what I lost
Androsace pubescens ....Lionel Clarkson...small but well flowered
Anemonella thalictriodes....Lionel Clarkson....its the time of year for anemonellas but mine are really just getting going
-
next few
Dionysia hybrid f2 MK972001....Ju Bramley...the name in the bottom corner is not the name for this plant
Douglasia laevigata....Ian Kidman...in a 28cm pan at least. Ian again had the most points for the Open Section...his 10th consecutive year for doing this...the show gave him a bottle of malt whisky as a reward...must call over soon
Draba dedeana...Lionel Clarkson
-
Wonderful pictures, Cliff, of wonderful plants. It was nice to see Draba dedeana on a show bench midst the other rarer plants. Douglasia laevigata looked better than it does in the wild.
-
will do three more then have break...back into garden as stopped raining
Draba 'John Saxton'...Lionel Clarkson. A new cultivar which is a hybrid beteen D dedeana and D rosularis which shows great potential. Named in memory of John Saxton as it was he who produced the original plant...keith Lever, Aberconwy now propogates it
Fritillaria bithynica...Ian Leslie
Fritillaria tubiformis....George Young
Gentiana pumila delphinensis....Trevor Harding...again small but what colour
-
i'll add a few more over a cup of tea in between the showers...even hail
Hymenoxis lapidicola....Lionel Clarkson
Lewisia brachycalyx...Jim McGregor...two views, one close up to show flowers better
Narcissus rupicola...Geoff Rollinson, best bulbous plant
-
Paraquilegia anemenoides...Ian Kidman, one of his big 6 entries
Pleione grandiflora...John Craven
Primula bracteata var dubernardiana....Geoff Rollinson
-
Thought that went rather quick...will start again
Paraquilegia anemenoides...Ian Kidman, part of his big 6 entry
Pleione grandiflora....John Craven
Primula bracteata var dubernardeana Geoff Rollinson
-
Ranunculus alpestris (I think)....Lionel Clarkson
Two pictures of
Saxifraga columnaris, first by Geoff Mawson and the second by Ian Leslie
-
A little run of Townsendias
Townsendia exscapa...John Richards
Townsendia spathulata 'Cotton Ball'...John Dunn...may be a new species, introduced and named by Graham Nicholls
Townsendia spathulata...George Young...the normal version...is a true alpine as it lives over 10,000'. My first time of flowering, probably will now die
-
Final mish mash (from my picture) leaving the best plants till last
Rhododendron mucronulatum (dwarf) Dave Mountford...did not leave much room in car for other plants or people
The Farrer medal plant of
Draba ossetica...F&B Hoyle who also had
Draba mollissima on the bench...as short a flowering stem as I have ever seen on this draba...makes it worth while growing
-
Some lovely stuff there, thanks for posting George and Cliff.
-
So many really super plants to enjoy... but I must pick out that lovely Lewisia brachycalyx from Jim McGregor. How fresh and neat it is... the foliage is the picture of health.
Not to mention Peter Hood's pink version...lovely as well.
Seems early for that plant from the perspective of Aberdeen's climate so an especial treat to see it.
-
And the Smethursts (Brian and Shelagh) have Epimedium davidii in flower :o .... blow me down!
-
Will get round to writing info. about the photos soon :-[
-
Lovely images Anne, but I suspect that the clock on your camera might be slightly awry ... most of the exhibitors would have been on the motorway and well on their way home by 16.39!!!? :D
-
Cheers Cliff- just put it right! :-[
Mind you I've just put them on AGS site and included one of Loughborough :-[ :-[
Yes it's a stampede at the end, it amazes me how quickly the plants disappear- can't say as I blame the people who come such a long way though!
-
