Spotted this tree near Avondale, on my way to Oratia Native Plant Nursery. What is it?

Anthony, it looks like the South American 'Silk floss tree' Ceiba speciosa which should start flowering in NZ about now.

Thanks Ashley. It took me by surprise, so I have to stop the car in a bus stop (not the one under the tree but across the road) to photograph it.

That's certainly it, Ashley. I had posted a  photograph for identification late last year after a visit to Madeira. It is truly an impressive sight, stunningly colourful and beautiful.

A nice one to see, Anthony.
