Home territory here we come. That is if the weather is favourable and I can persuade S.W.M.B.O that she would really like to go to Gordon Riggs!

Well, 17.20 and, miracle of miracles, the pots are polished, flowers tweaked, packed in crates, labels printed. OK, so I did some pre prep last night. Red label potential?.................................... :'( :'( :'( :'(

I'm off for a beer.

See you all early, if not bright, tomorrow morning for fun, frolics and a pub lunch.

And remember when Carol speaks the only valid response is Yes ma'am, right away, ma'am

Well, the EAST LANCASHIRE AGS SHOW 2011 is over and what a wonderful event it turned out to be.  Many congratulations to Carol Kellett and her magnificent team on yet another highly successful show on a glorious sunny day.
We (along with many other willing volunteers) were at the show hall in Whitworth, near Rochdale at 6am to set up the entire event (another function at this popular hall prevented us setting up on the Friday evening) and we were ready to accept the first arrival of plants at just after 7.30am.
First image was taken just prior to judging.
Second image shows a typically colourful show bench.
Image three illustrates a magnificent Pulsatilla grandis 'Budapest' exhibited by Geoff Rollinson that was runner-up to the Farrer Medal plant and gained a well-earned Certificate of Merit.
Image four shows Farrer Medal winner Derek Pickard from Stockton-on-Tees with his incredible Dionysia bryoides.

My word, that looks like a well packed show hall... very impressive. 8)
Tough having to have the earlky start for show preps on the day but you've all done a grand job..... everyone must have been heeding Martin's exhortations to  jump to Carol's commands to great effect... what a display of fine plants.

Lovely Farrer plant from Derek Pickard....  not his first Farrer by any means, I don't think?

As Cliff says, a lovely show. A very nice day eventually. Did the animals on the Motorway ever get caught I wonder?  And where they released deliberately to keep people away? We got lost in the wilds of Manchester trying to cut across, but then getting lost on the way to a show is not something new to us.
Did not manage to get to Gordon Rigg's though.
Pictures to follow. Not as many as last time, not because there were fewer plants, but it seemed a bit daft to take pictures of the plants which had survived from Blackpool.

Since at the East Lancs Show we have to remain at our posts during the whole day and cannot repair to the pub for lunch I can only report this item secondhand.  It was reported to me that someone (a forumist) was enjoying 'HANKY PANKY with Diane in the pub at lunchtime.  I don't want to mention any names in such a public place but the "GENTLEMAN" concerned might have had to remove his dummy on this occasion.

And here is the forum's own Veteran Vet, he looks a very happy winner of the raffle.  Traditionally at East Lancs show, the top prize is a super Simnel cake made by Hilary Price.  Was there any left by the time you got home, George?

May I, as chairman of the ELG, thank all the members who contributed to yesterdays show at Whitworth.
We were blessed with great weather, beautiful plants and a really warm and friendly atmosphere all day, but it is only because of the many group members who started at 6.00 am and kept going all day that it was such a success.
The kitchen was busy all the time, with bacon an sausage oven bottom cakes, potato pie peas and red cabbage, and over 350 cups of tea and coffee.
If I tell you that, having closed the show a little before 4.00 pm, the hall was completely cleared by a quarter to five!
A great day and much appreciated, thanks again to Show Secretary Carol and everyone involved.
JohnnyD.

While waiting for the pics of the plants why not take a look at a class which is very close to my heart. Minigardens,
In yesterdays show there were five gardens - two of which were seen for the first time.
We had two gardens, including one in a broken pot which many felt was worthy of the first sticker, from Mick & Mandy McLoughlin.
Another garden, seen for the first time, was from Peter Hood who has not shown a minigarden before. Great effort Peter - keep going.
Here's to seeing many more exhibitors trying their hand at a class which attracts such a lot of public attention.
Keep 'em coming guys.
JohnnyD.

You can see a little more of them here Chris ... thanks to John for posting his images of these beautiful creations.
The same gardens are repeated here, but as slightly larger images (when clicked), so that interested members can better appreciate the craft and artistry employed to create them. John, you have proved the inspiration for many of these mini-gardeners and your prize winning garden at East Lancs will, without doubt, inspire others via the world wide web.

Another class (this time exclusive to East Lancashire) that always excites interest and captures the imagination of the public and exhibitors alike is:- 'One pan containing three rock plants for colour effect (in flower or foliage mixed)'.
Some wonderful entries yesterday and here are some of the finest examples:-

Special class and entries for same.

The winner was the final image exhibited by Diane Clement ... even after all that Hanky Panky! (See above).

Two new minigardens... now I'm really cross that I didn't go.
I had been out in that direction on Friday, dropping off my son and his bike for a training ride near Hebden Bridge and then spent far too much money at Slack Top and Gordon Riggs. Could not trust myself with the temptation of all those nursery sales tables.

I can vouch for the tastiness of the prize cake as I won it last year (Maggi, I really think we need a 'scoffing' smiley :):P:))

I echo those thoughts, Cliff. It is good to see this planted named for Hans. I am fortunate, as I think several Forumists are, to have a great selection of his collected  or self raised Primula marginata forms ... delightful plants all and all the more precious for reminding us of our departed friend.

The P arginata 'Johannes Hoeller' was shown by me...sadly ignored by the judges.. but I do know this plant was raised from wild collected seed by Johannes as he e mailed me when I asked the forum of the origins of the plant. My specimens came from Susan Tindall who I think obtained her plants via JH...the flowers are large and a nice shade...was hoping it might last till Hexham but doubt it.
Thanks for the Douglasbank i/d

I had seed from last year' seedlist of P. marginata, hoping for some variation in the plants. Just one (of 28) has any farina on it at all, a thin gold edging to the still very small leaves. Most of the others are smaller, slightly velvety and look like P. allionii but a couple have almost heart-shaped leaves with the linear veins set a little deep into the flesh of the leaves, if you see what I mean. Too small for pics yet but I'll show them when possible, for expert opinions.

My brain has responded to the tablets and a little clarity has returned ... Eric 'Ruddy' Marsh (aka Palustris) ACTUALLY spoke to me for about thirty SECONDS (my legs didn't stop moving for longer than that during the entire event)!  Mr Marsh always looks too inebriated to me to be able to take so many excellent images, so I can only presume that the lovely Mrs Marsh ACTUALLY takes all the photos.

Cheers Eric ... it was good to see you and sorry that I couldn't identify someone with a silly name like Palustris.
Yours, Ranunculus.

... And Mr. Grainger ... we saved you bacon butties, fresh coffee, a parking space and a place at the judges lunch and you simply let us down again ... we'll only do it for three more years and then you've had it!!!

Love and trilliums to you both.

Sadly Mr.Marsh does not actually consume alcohol and he does take all the photographs. Mrs. Marsh is more likely to be found sitting on the side waiting or talking to Mrs. Dower.

....that was our first 'pilot' show prior to being awarded an AGS National Show. We had two shows both on Sundays and they were a huge success. I remember Wilf Kirby winning best in show. In those days, we offered raffle prizes for first, second and third prize winners. Poor Wilf thought we were raffling his plant at the end of the show.

We worked out that it was 23 years ago that we first went to a show in Whitworth, on a Sunday too!
....that was our first 'pilot' show prior to being awarded an AGS National Show. We had two shows both on Sundays and they were a huge success. I remember Wilf Kirby winning best in show. In those days, we offered raffle prizes for first, second and third prize winners. Poor Wilf thought we were raffling his plant at the end of the show.

Happy, happy days buddy ... only seems like yesterday!   I could grow plants in those days.
