An unknown Cyrtanthus
(Edit by maggi to resize picture to maximum width 760 pixels )

Hi Arnold,
My first guess would be [elatus x montanus]. That one is pretty common in cultivation, blooms much more readily than pure elatus, and is somewhat fertile. So it could just as easily be an offspring of [elatus x montanus]. C. sanguineus is a full flower, but mine (all one clone) have only a single flower per scape. Montanus has skinnier tepals.

Thanks, Jim.

Hi Arnold
I task to C. sanguineus or a its hybrid, look at myself from the position of the stamen
-
It flowers freely and multiplies well. I have to pull it out of the pot and divide every two years.
-
Flowering last week for me was Cyrtanthus spiralis. This is the second year is has flowered.
-
That's looking good, Calvin. Who could resist those leaves in company with such flowers?
See you soon in the UK at the Alpines 2011 conference!! 8)

And I find it to be more or less evergreen for me, so interesting year-round.
Looking very much forward to the conference, flights are booked and busy applying for a visa! :)

congratulations Calvin, it looks beautifull
-
That really is a beauty, Calvin!
I hope it sets seed! ;D
Look forward to seeing you at the Conference.

Wow, Calvin. Those are amazing leaves. :o :o I didn't realise it was SUCH a spiralis, figuring it was slightly spiraled leaves, not such a wonderful shape. Thanks so much for showing us. 8)

Howdy All,
My complex hybrid Cyrtanthus grown from seed (C. sanguineus x [C. sanguineus x loddigesiana]) has it's first flowers up for the season. The flower is about 5cm across, but I can confirm sizes exactly if anyone is interested. It is a pale apricot colour with just a blush of pink to it that doesn't really show up in the pic. This one has now flowered 3 years in a row, and now has an offset. Last year a second seedling flowered and it was a soft red colour, and this year there are 3 sending up buds, so hopefully that will be this apricot one, the red, and another colour if I'm lucky. THIS year I'm finally going to mark which pot is which so that I know for the future. ;D I keep meaning to but never get around to it. This pale apricot one has now been marked so I know which one it is at least.
Enjoy. 8)

That is an elegant flower, Paul.
Looking forward to seeing what colours the other "babies" produce. :D

Me too! Last year I was so stoked to see a second one flowering, and then it was so different a colour to the first (but an identical shape). I was most impressed. I can but hope that the third seedling will flower a different colour again..... maybe a nice pastel pink? I can dream, can't I? ;D

I've got this plant as Cyrtanthus breviflorus. I am in doubt about this name. Is there anyone who can give me the right ID?
-
It looks more like C. mackenii or a related species. I don't have a key to the genus and cannot provide a better name.
-
Here are flowering some Cyrtanthus :)
Cyrtanthus 'Devils Delight'
Cyrtanthus parviflorus ( received from a nice friend )

Very nice Alessandro! :o :o

flower of Cyrtanthus clavatus
Alessandro, I am most envious! I am struggling to keep small seedlings of clavatus alive. Do yours grow in summer or in winter?
Jim

I too like your Cyrtanthus clavatus 8)

Jim
my being winter increase, plus precise autumn
to sincere being the bulbs come from California

Here is my first Cyrtanthus montanus to bloom this season. Montanus has narrow petals but multiple buds on the umbel. You need multiple bulbs, because mine at least don't seem to bloom but once every several years.

My C montanus is flowering too, it took last year out but flowerd 2 years ago. It produced a lot of offsetts so I put it in a big pot with some offsetts around the edge.

I wonder if photoperiod triggers flowering in these Cyrtanthus? We're at 40°N latitude; you must be much farther north, Peter.

My plant lives in the corner of a south facing window sill with no curtains or obstruction to light. My feeling was that I had kept it in constant growth last year, but this year watering has been a little more erratic and it went close to dormancy a couple of times through drying out. I believe this can stimulate flowering in some plants?
-
here flowers in this day a nice hybrid ( elatus X montanus )
It is strange - I grow C.montanus since some years but it has never flowering .....this hybrid flowers regular ....
-
Very nice cross Hans!
I've heard C. montanus isn't the easiest to bloom, I don't grow it so I'm not sure but I think Jim does!
-
Thank you Josh ,
I have received from a nice person in USA before some years some small bulblets ....they have grow fantasic for me ...now I have a big pot with many bulbs ;D
-
Lovely Cyrtanthus and also a lovely photo.
Angie :)
-
Thank you Angie !
-
It is the depth of colour and the jewel like richness of these flowers like Hans' C.x montanus which takes my breath away. 8)
-
Thank you Maggi ;D

The hybrid [elatus x montanus] is truly superior. I got mine as bulbs in 1999 from the I.B.S. BX. It is the most free-flowering Cyrtanthus I have -- but none of the Cyrtanthus I have are all that floriferous. The [elatus x montanus] is even somewhat fertile. Mine have occasionally produced seeds, although I've never planted them.
The hybrid [elatus x montanus] is better than the species montanus; it blooms more easily than montanus. I think the color on the hybrid is better than on the species as well.

The hybred seems to be a super plant, This is my pot of Cyrtanthus montanus today.
-
also my is in flower
-
Dave Toole kindly sent me some bulbs of Cyrtanthus mackenii, and I'm pleased to say one is flowering now. 8)
-
Nice to see that I'm not the only one that struggles to flower C. montanus. I finally flowered C. falcatus this year, which was a big achievement for me, but montanus from around the same time (1o years ago from seed) has still never flowered. ::) I can dig up pics of the falcatus if anyone is interested, although it is 6 or 8 weeks ago when it actually flowered.?
Nice clean pale yellow on the mackenii, Anthony. Nice to see. 8)
-
Anthony, it tends to be evergreen. Unlike most other Cyrtanthi, if it keeps on growing do not stop watering completely. It needs a dryish winter but again, if it retains the foliage do not force it to die of thrist.
-
It's done well Anthony.
Will be at least another month before i see blooms down here :).
Any luck with the Pancrathium illyricum i sent you ? --mine have leaves just coming through the soil but will it flower ?--that is the question .... ;D
Rightio just heading out the door. The boss,(she who will be obeyed :-*) has given me a couple days off relaxing :-\ in the mountains
