Title: Switzerland July 2007
Post by: Diane Clement on August 03, 2007, 10:07:19 PM
I'll join the band of travellers newly returned from holidays and share some pictures.  We have just returned from 10 days in Switzerland, half the time based in Zermatt in the Valais (south) and the rest based in Wengen in the  Bernese Oberland.  The weather has been strange there, as it has with us in the UK.  Unseasonably dry and warm in April, then in May came snow (as Tony Goode reported a month or so ago).  The result for us was an excellent floral display with a few special high altitude plants still in flower which normally would be finishing by the end of July.  You will see from the pix that we had excellent weather nearly every day.
To start, the view of the Matterhorn from our hotel in Zermatt

First some flowers from the meadows and woodland edge.  I'm not completely sure about some of the names, so I'd welcome any corrections
Aster alpinus
Sempervivum arachnoideum
Nigritella nigra
Dryas octopetalla
Pyrola rotundifolia

About time we saw some images from your new camera Mrs Clement....and what an excellent start.
Could you possibly stay up all night and post a few hundred more please?
Glad you had such a splendid time in two of our 'special' places.

I think organised trips tend to go earlier for more reliable flowers but we have to stick to school holidays so we are always a bit late for the best display.  So we just do a package holiday from a commercial brochure.

Title: Re: Switzerland July 2007

I suppose you have to hire a car?

Definitely not.  The two resorts we stayed in are actually car-free, as are several of the high altitude resorts.  Switzerland has an excellent network of public transport - trains, buses, boats and cable cars, all timetables linked together for good transfers.  And if you fly with certain companies, your luggage is transported for you to your hotel.  Once checked in, the next time you see it is in your hotel room.  And coming home, you check in for your flight at your resort when your luggage is registered for the journey home.

We change trains here to go further up to the Eigergletscher station at 2320m.  This is the start of the Eiger trail hike which goes along the north face of the Eiger - sounds impressive - but it's a fairly straightforward hike through scree with a long descent at the end, best undertaken with trekking poles.  You can see the path through the scree.

And on our last day, we caught the bus to the end of the Lauterbrunnen valley to Stechelberg.  At the end of the valley there are no cable cars or trains to assist with the climb.  But the stunning scenery there makes the 1000m climb to the Schmadribach falls and up to Obersteinberg worthwhile.

Diane - Thanks for this great tour of two places that I have visited.  It is great to see what is in flower later in the season than when I went.

It was really COLD when we were at Kleine Scheidegg at the end of May!  The Wigwam and its Biergarten were closed!

Did you know all the plants or do you have a plant guide book?

We've been visiting this area for 25 years so I feel like I "know" most of the plants, but putting the correct name is not always so easy.  And there's always surprises because of different weather conditions.  I'd never seen Erictrichium before (in Europe anyway) as we have always been too late for it before.

As to the fieldguides, I always take Collins Alpine Flowers by Kit Grey Wilson and Marjorie Blamey as it is the only one I have that is light enough to carry in a rucksack.  But because it covers the whole mid-European mountain ranges from the Pyrenees to Roumania, it is not detailed enough for any one area.  When I get home I have to consult larger tomes such as Flora Alpina and Flora Helvetica and also Flora Europaea (the latter I am privileged to hold the AGS seed distribution's copy because I need it when checking names of donations).

But it is still a struggle to name a fraction of what we see, I tend to photograph the "easier" ones!  So no guarantee that any of my names are correct, but glad to have any corrections.

You will be pleased to find out that FOOD is of great importance to me when on holiday.  We feasted on large buffet breakfasts every morning, 5 course dinners every night.  Only room for an Applestrudel or Apricotcake at lunchtime (with vanilla sauce and ice cream of course ...).  But I didn't think to photograph these (shame on me).

The "charming hiking companion" sends his regards and we both congratulate you on your recent anniversary and hope we survive the next 3 years together in order to catch you up.  Mr Clement (Michael to you) is now off to pick blueberries, blackberries and tomatoes from his allotment this morning while I get on with those bulbs.

Diane,

Unfortunately, No. The nearest I have been is to the Dolomites where I saw many of the same plants, growing in similar conditions. It really is a treat to see such a wealth of plants as grow in the meadows there and it makes one consider what a plant heritage we have lost through our agricultural practices. Long may these areas be preserved to give us this enjoyment, a very simple pleasure, so pure and uncomplicated and, unfortunately, so easily lost if people do not see it as an integral part of their heritage every bit as important as castles, music, art or literature but so very much more fragile and at risk.

So, Diane, thank you so very much for this pleasure albeit at a once remove. Admin recently asked for suggestions for improvements to the forum but he can rest assured that this is one area where the forum is already working very well and in need of no improvement.

Paddy

As a follow up to Diane's wonderful holiday report could I be permitted to contribute some images from a magical holiday we enjoyed in Wengen in early June 2004?  This resort is very dear to our hearts and should feature highly on everyone's list of alpine destinations (especially those who prefer not to hire vehicles or are less physically able to hike uphill for long periods). The transport system is extremely impressive and surprisingly inexpensive while the village itself is the embodiment of all that is pleasant about being in Switzerland....superb surroundings, impeccably clean and quiet, features ample shopping for that ubiquitous 'after meal' evening stroll and seems full of totally adequate hotels.  The flora of the region is quite breathtaking and visitors can expect to see wonderful displays from the last weeks of May (in an early spring season) to the end of September (in a late summer).  We were fortunate enough to arrive just as the snows were melting and we were repaid with a glut of beautiful alpine flowers, the like of which we have only ever encountered in the Dolomites and on the Hintertux in Austria.
We travelled on the trains, cable cars, buses and chairlifts (with scarcely a wait between each) to the equally splendid resorts of Murren, Grindlewald, Interlaken and the villages of the Lauterbrunnen valley and visited many of the enchanting alpine sites that obviously inspired Diane and Michael.
I won't replicate many of the species that Diane has already so ably illustrated but it seems correct to point out that many of the species still in flower during her visit in late July were to be found (admittedly in slightly different locations) during our trip at the beginning of June.

If photos such as these are not enough to convince a casual onlooker of the fascination of the exquisite little plants of the mountains, then I don't know what else could better make the point.
Majestic scenery and rugged terrain and stunning wee flowers with a deceptive frailty... it's the epitome of all we love, isn't it?

Franz, I was first in Switzerland in 1958... I still love the chocolate, too.

Mark, have you seen Ms Grogan lately... she's like a scrawny wrinkled pixie.

Mark's gone offline so I'll clue you in, Cliff.... Clare Grogan is an actress ( now more TV presenter) who was in the British film "success"  "Gregory's Girl" and  she sang with a 1980s band ( modern beat combo to you) called Altered Images, their greatest hit (??) was a squeaky song called "happy Birthday"... but not with the traditional tune. Not a football fan then Paddy?   :D    Hurling perhaps?

Thanks for the comments Ian....we really can recommend Wengen as a perfect 'alpine' destination.  Can't remember which operator we used (Sue will no doubt remember this evening), but I do know that they were totally proficient, especially with the transfer of luggage (exactly as Diane has described in her wonderful report). We also enjoyed a trouble free train transfer that enhanced the travel experience and thereby the holiday. The views from our hotel room were literally 'to die for', overlooking, as they did, the Lauterbrunnen Valley way below. See attached images...

Cliff,

I'm a wet day sport's enthusiast; if it's raining I will sit at the television and watch what is on otherwise I stay outdoors. As a young chap I played hurling, football (Gaelic) and some soccer but I never moved on to appreciate watching  others playing. The enjoyment was in the doing not in the watching. Yesterday I did, unfortunately, watch Waterford suffer defeat in the All-Ireland hurling semi final at the hands of Limerick despite the fact that they were firm favourites.

The photographs are outstanding; really enjoying them.

Wenger is obviously an excellent location. My dear wife has been very impressed by the photographs also, is considering it as a possible destination for next yeat but has a number of questions: Are the hotels good? What star rating? Is the food good? Swimming pool available? Anything else to do besides admire scenery and flowers?

Thanks for the kind comments.  I think we can reassure Mrs T. that Wengen has some REALLY classy hotels, four and perhaps five star no doubt, a swimming pool (and several in the hotels), an excellent range of shops, restaurants, traffic-free streets, a relaxed but flourishing night-life (if required) and is near enough to Grindlewald, First, Murren and the lakeside villages that surround Interlaken (which boasts 'advanced' shopping, parks, museums and a casino)......oh and there are many miles of high, medium and low level hikes if you are permitted a little exercise Paddy?

....And you KNOW just how wonderful the flowers can be!!!

If you do decide to go then please don't forget to buy the excellent Swiss travel passes AND before I forget...we had one day of light drizzle in two weeks of glorious sunshine!

....And...NO...we are not on commission!   :D

..........Mark, have you seen Ms Grogan lately... she's like a scrawny wrinkled pixie.

Dear Mrs Young,

I act as agent for the Solicitors Sue,Grabbit and Runne of whom you will no doubt have heard. My firm acts in the interests of Scrawny Wrinkled Pixies the world over, and I have noted that you are in writing as likening them to a certain Ms Grogan. This is of course a libelous statement (and could also be slanderous-if only I could remember the difference) and we look forward to an appropriate written apology. Should no such apology be forthcoming we shall of course take any necessary further action.

....And furthermore Mrs Young, as a legal representative of the very hastily formed (but already extremely popular) Scrawny Wrinkled Pixies, we must advise you that Aaron Lowlips, Grace Saidtwice, Purple P. Heartlapse and Kronic J. Windup have instructed me to pursue damages jointly on their behalves regarding your implied slur that said Ms G. could hold a candle to their innovative garage forecourt rap gospel punk rock gypsy king style.

...Oh and peace to all the bruvvers........(and Joe Brown, of course)!

I think Clare Grogan is a Scottish actress and singer.

I take my hat off to you sir......
Oh that I could display such knowledge of Austrian singers and actresses!

Cliff,

I had spent some time on the internet this morning looking up Wengen, the sites you recommended among those visited, and was very impressed.

Mrs. T. likes to hear 'swimming pool, spa, etc etc'

And why not, Paddy; those are excellent words to hear in conjunction with holidays, or, even better, everyday life!

I would make a reply to Messrs Nicholson and Booker, in their respective roles for their esteemed organisations, but my own legal representatives have advised me that maintaining a dignified silence is my best option at the moment. My legal eagles are the old Scottish firm of Wrappit Droppit and Haul'em......formerly better known as a removal firm, but who have now diversified  into estate agency and criminal law... yes, yes, I know most lawyers are criminals, but that'll get me into more trouble...

Perhaps Diane would be so kind as to update you on the merits and whereabouts of hotels, pools, spas, etc. in Wengen, Paddy...having been to this beautiful village more recently than us?  I forgot to mention the cinema as well....is that still operating Diane?

Wengen is a favourite holiday spot of many SRGC and AGS members..... I can think of some very well known and influential persons who would cite it as their MOST favourite venue.... and these are folks that are very choosy about their luxuries at home and abroad and that includes the shopping!

The composition of flowers in foreground, mountains in background, wonderful.

Many thanks for all information on Wengen. It certainly sounds very nice.

Maggi,

I put those comments re spa etc as Mary's requirements but while I would no doubt enjoy the walking during the day I would equally wish to return to luxury, excellent food and comfort for the night.

Cliff,

My son is sitting beside me at present and was very tickled that there was a man called 'Ranunculus'. He thought it was a very unusual name. After explanation he had me change my signature to one which is more representative of me - according to him, that is. So, I'll leave it for a while at least to pleasure him. It is a sobriquet applied to a well-known snowdrop enthusiast here in Ireland - Banrion na bPlúrini Sneachta (Queen of the Snowdrops!)

Your kind comments make any small effort more than worthwhile. Will try to add to the Wengen images later today.
Great to see that there is one more 'flower pot man' on this forum Paddy....though 'queen' of the snowdrops may be taking it a TAD too far?   :D

Fantastic Pics Cliff - and you had much better weather in 2004 than we did this year!
Fantastic hotels abound - but for those who want it cheaper I can recommend a great chalet for £25 a night.

I would think it would be wise to book soon, before everywhere is full up; half the Club will be there  anyway and at this rate most of the Forumists! ::)

Some might think your final photo there, of the Crocus with "top dressing", would be appropriately cross-posted in this thread: Crocus and horse dung ......

And just in case you think cheap means it will be miles from the town centre - our chalet was about 250m to the left of the sportpavilion in Cliffs 'easier route to the heights' picture!

Can't tell my my merganser from my elbow Mark...thanks for the identification.
The Nemesia I did know, but many of the images were titled as and when they left the memory cards in 2004 and I haven't really had the time (or the impetus) to 'rename' them.....hence the strange descriptions of some of them.

My contributions are now complete, so can we please encourage others with images from Switzerland to post, post, post.

Cliff,

You say your 'contributions are now complete'. Well, let me tell you that Mary has given the go ahead for a holiday in Wengen next summer on one condition - that I make all the arrangements, bookings etc. Fair enough, I suppose.

Many thanks for a truly great show, really enjoyed it and, of course, Diane's which started off this thread.

This, for me has been the most enjoyable threads for ages (trying to be diplomatic here, can't remember one better but just in case...)

As plant (and especially alpine) fanatics we are always searching for good images and information about our beloved plants....some of you may have already stumbled across the following link, but I must admit I have only just discovered this magnificent site.  My apologies if you are already devotees but to any poor soul who hasn't been so fortunate then I would urge you to visit at your earliest opportunity.  Leif and Anita Stridvall have created one of the most beautiful and perfectly crafted sites on the web....you will NOT be disappointed.
