Title: a quizz for the galanthophiles......
Post by: Maggi Young on February 25, 2011, 03:50:18 PM
Okay 'drop fiends... here's a question for you......

which snowdrop is shortish, good chunky flower, two on a stem, plicate leaves, and with markings a bit like 'Grumpy' or 'Hans guck in die luft'?

Photo later..... if you're good!  ;D

The ovary is around 10mm long, straight sided and pale green.
The outers are 3cms long, quite full with a  short claw which is around 4 to 5 mmm at most
The inner marks are distinct from eachother, no bleeding with the "eye" marks being rather long and narrow ( imaging the ovary shape rather) and the "moustache" mark is a strong green, rounded and well drawn at the lower edge and sharply angular to a triangle top.

For Myself I would just name it Margaret Young that's what everyone else does  ;)

That's not my style, Ian....  ;D

I am sure this 'drop does have a name already.... just need to find what it is.

Here are a couple of pix.... you'll see that it is not long out of the ground....more growth to go yet in leaves and stems but it will still be on the chunky side.

Can't quite see the "eye" spots properly but they are linear rather than round splodges........
in the photos there looks to be more "bleeding" in the marks than is caught be the naked eye where they appear completely separate  :-\

Maggi this may be too obvious (dumb?) but do you keep a list of snowdrops you have? The assembled experts might stand a better chance with a list to eliminate from?

No list, Chris  :-[

I just thought that this would be a distinctive 'drop that might lend itself to an easy ID....... :-X

Are you sure its not a gift from Ian Christie? It looks like it comes from a castle area!

Gerard we have quite a lot of snowdrops from the Castle series from Ian C and from the castle from the "other" Ian Christie ( of the castle), but we couldn't remember if this was one of those or not!

Ian has a similar plant in the Castle series, but it is not the same.

I cannot quite convince myself from the picture that the two flowers really are on the same stem but if it does that from one year to the next then only a tiny number of snowdrops have this characteristic.

Mark, it really looks nothing like Percy Picton because it does not have the elongated pedicel that is characteristic of Percy.

Yes, two flowers on one stem... and there are other stems coming with two flowers also.

Alan, Percy doesnt have a long pedicel when it first breaks free from the spathe.

Yes, I guess that's true Mark, although as the flower matures the pedicel gets very long indeed.

Wash your mouth out, John...... as if I would ?

(Yes yes, I there was that incident with the fake Nerine a couple of years ago, but that's all in the past  ;D)

I promise you, this 'drop is quite real and natural... it is a most lovely thing.

You will probably have to wait for the new book John. I understand it is expected to be about about 1 foot (30cm) thick  ;D ;D

I know the noo.

It's a selection, yes please  ;), of plicatus found by possibly Catherine Erskine or more likely Ian Christie. I first saw this when I gave a talk at Cambo.
Title: Re: a quizz for the galanthophiles......
Post by: Maggi Young on March 18, 2011, 06:09:41 PM
It's not from Cambo.
Not one of Ian the Christie's finds either.
Turns out it was one  Ian Y found and Ian Christie the Second kind gave  him from the Castle.
The plot thickens because on closer inspection in better weather there are different marking = on the flowers... from bulb to bulb in the little group and even from one inner to another on one flower!

More research needed over some years, the BD reckons, to see what is going on with this little cutie.

maybe it was a seedling group. It would be best to lift and divide and put all those that are the same together.

Or do you mean the main flower is different to the smaller second flower?
