I am planning to be at Harlow on Saturday (27th Feb 2011) for lunch. How many seats shall I reserve for the Forum get-together? ;D
I am not showing plants as we are passing by Harlow after visiting family in London but hope to find something nice to bring home with me at the sales tables :)
-
Alan Newton will be there and lots more..... too far for us.... you'd better have an extra bun on our behalf!
-
Forgive me Maggi, is this at Harlow in Berkshire/Middlesex? that would be just round the corner from me. I tried to google it but there was nothing relating to 2011. Would you have some more details or perhaps a link, please?
-
Maren,
Here is a link to the AGS show dates. Its Harlow Essex. http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/shows/dates-and-venues/
Cheers Mick
-
Maren.... Mick has beaten me to it..... thanks Mick 8)
Is Harlow too far for you and Mandy to travel, Mick?
-
Some channel hoppers are expected there as well Tony... ;)
-
Hi,
thank you both. It's only an hour's drive. I'll definitely go. Something nice to look forward to.

It was on the news today.. 8)

Alas no...too early for my plants. I'm going to spend the day tidying and repotting Lewisias. Enjoy the plants...and lunch!
-
Hey Come on Martin, who are you kidding ::) We know you will turn up at Loughborough next Saturday with a bootful of hopefuls ;D
-
I hope to be there :D - I've a couple of corydalis for B section ;) would be great to meet any forum members.

So far the count is 1 Draba longisiliqua for a cushion class and one not quite awake Sempervivum...and there might be 1 Corydalis if the sun ever reappears :'( :'( :'(
-
Maggi,
Its a bit too far for Mandy and me. So we're off to Dublin for the weekend (My birthday treat from Mandy). We will be at Loughborough the week after though looking forward to seeing everybody there.
Cheers
Mick
P.S. Thanks for the card Maggi

You can build your strength up with some Guinness in Dublin for a great show in Loughborough, then.... sounds fun. Hope you have a great time.... be sure an look out ofr the collection of Vireya Rhododendrons in the Dublin Botanic Gardens..... they're great. And their restaurant is super too. ;)
-
Looks like a cheap round so far .... no need to buy a whole cake when a couple of slices will do ... unless we mail the rest to the frozen North? ;)
-
Happy to split the postage with you Tony ;)
-
I thought it was going to be a fine sunny weekend but the forecast I saw early today says rain..... so maybe you might need to eat a whole cake yourselves to keep your strength up and keep warm..... ;)
-
we could have one each! ;D 8) ;D
-

By the time we got there they were down to 40p small slices :( and by the time we were introduced we'd eaten them!
Nice to meet you Peter - hope to have much longer to talk next time. Also nice to see the two Lucs (with Kurt Vickery), Rob Potterton, Ashley Saddler (time you stopped lurking!) and all my other old friends. It was a flying visit - just a couple of hours - must make more time in future.

So----- which plant won the Farrer Medal? ???

Ah well, no one will ever accuse you of being a "pot hunter", Tony, if you can visit a show and not notice the FM plant!

Excellent.... thanks Diane. What a fine pot of Corydalis popovii from Michael Chadwick.
Quite unusual for a corydalis to get a medal, I think..... so that's extra special for the corydalis fans.

It really was a flying visit ... and with so many folk to chat to the plants got short shrift!
However, I did take a few pics of my rapidly chosen favourites for you. I passed up the myriad Dionysias, even the gorgeous D. afghanica but was drawn to the following selection.
Primula 'Arduaine'
Callianthemum anemenoides
Hepaticas - plenty of these. Did I really see one on sale for £130 in the sales area? :o
Hepatica americana - a feast of flowers
Narcissus cantabricus clusii with Narcissus x susanae
Massed Corydalis species including a nice C popovii but NOT the FM plant
Scilla indra
Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem'
Muscari discolor
-
AND there was a fab display from RBG Kew.
Here is a better view than on the link posted earlier - split into two halves to give you a closer look. Finally a close-up of their Iris nusairiensis.
-
How lovely.... Don Peace's primula is gorgeous and the Ransons have some fine plants, don't they?
And I see David Hoare's Saxifraga season is well in train ;)
Nice to see the Kew display, too, I spot a few favourites there.
It is good to know you didn't spend all your time chatting and eating cake, Tony!

Without realising it at the time it seems I do have an eye for well grown plants .... all those named are top notch growers!
Ummm ... actually I did spend nearly all the time chatting and eating cake ;D

More photos from Jon Evans on the AGS site: http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//Early+Spring+Show+Harlow+th+February+/486/?page=1
It seems Kit Strange and her team have organised another super show, they and the exhibitors must be happy this weekend. 8)

It was a great show indeed Maggi !
From what I heard from Ray Drew, the number of plants was very slightly down, but the overall quality was better than last year.
The number of visitors also seemed to be up - there were times where one could hardly move in the sales area !
Again, it was much fun meeting old and new Forum friends... as Tony, we're starting to get short of time to look at the plants.. too much chatting to do ;D ;D
I did manage to get some pictures made (not as good as Tony's I'm afraid) so here they come.
I'll start with the Farrer winner :
1) Corydalis popovi
2-3-4-5) Some frighteningly perfect 3 pan entries of Dionysia
6) Dionysia 'Brimstone'
7) Dionysia freitagii
8 ) Dionysia x 'Gnom' - How on earth do you grow a plant as perfectly symmetrical as this ???
9) Dionysia "Monika" - simply huge !!
10) A lonesome Frit : Fritillaria aurea
Back later with some more !
-
Thanks for posting these lovely pictures. It always amazes me that there is so much on display at this time of year.
I am with you Luc , how can they grown Dionysia so perfect.
Waiting to see more.
Angie :)
-
Here are some of the plants that caught my eye, not necessarily prize winners:
Arum pictum Primrose 'Warburg'
Crocus sieberi ssp sublimis 'Tricolor'
Cymbidium goeringii
Galanthus plicatus ssp Augustus (not sure about the naming)
Hepatica maxima
Ozothamnus collection
Leptinella potentillina
-
...and a few more:
Grevillea Mt Tamboritha
Hepatica nobilis v japonica
Kew exhibit - tulip
Rodanthe anthemoides
Scoliopus bigelovii
Ypsilandra tibetica.
-
...and finally (although I have lots more):
Tufascape 1(front) and 2(back)
Shopping
A friendly face is always welcome. :) :) :)
-
Hi Maren, too bad we didn't meet .. :(
I also have some more pix left - not too many repeats I hope !
1) an amazing 3 pan Saxifrag entry :o :o
2) another one
3) Saxifraga "Allendale Charm"
4) Saxifraga 'Coolock Gem'
5) Saxifraga Cumulus
Next - 3 different Callianthemum anemonoides
6) C. anemonoides
7) C. anemonoïdes - white form
8 ) C. anemonoides - Blackthorn group - I'd never seen a double before ! :o :o
9) Galanthus 'Sophie North' - very popular, there must have been 4 or 5 exhibits of this form !
10) Galanthus "Straffan"
-
Hej Luc,
yes, what a pity we didn't meet. I deliberately put on a badge with my name just in case there was someone who wanted to say Hello. I noticed quite a few people who were rushing around looking for plants to buy (just like me). Next time I'll wear a hat with blinking lights on top. ;D ;D ;D - On reflection, it may have the opposite effect. ;) ;)
-
I admit Maren, I did forget to put the red Carnation in my top button hole... ;D ;D ;)
-
A lovely potful of Narcissus cantabricus clusii - I don't suppose any forumist would like to admit ownership and let me beg a few seeds?? ::)
