Title: Ian Butterfield
Post by: garyhove on February 18, 2011, 05:53:36 PM
hello

I have a very basic question to ask does Ian Butterfield sell plants via mail order? he has no email or website to look at.  I would not want to contact him unnecessarily if he does not!

Hello Gary,

Ian does sell via mail order.
Just ask for his catalogue and he will send it. You can then order from the catalogue.
I think it might be too late for this season though... :(

Yes it may be too late. His catalogue states 'Orders received after January 1st 2011 will be held over until the following year'.
Worth a phone call though. He has always been very helpful when I have phoned.

2010/11 catalogue
18 species and natural hybrids
74 hybrids
4 winter flowering hybrids.

I think that might be a good range ;)

You should have a look at Koolplants on e-bay for great quality and available now. If you're careful you can get some good pleione's at reasonable prices.

74 hybrids!!! great they are what I am after, will have to start saving my pennies!.

I have been picking up varieties on ebay and from a couple of very helpful people of the forum and still open to any offers from other forum people who may have some spares????

He is definitely closed for mail order now, but he'll take orders for next year.

If you want to really treat yourself, and why shouldn't you, you're worth it!!! - go to the Malvern Spring Show, 12th May to 15th May. He usually wins gold at that show and he has lots of lovely pleiones for sale. And you can see whats 'round the corner', recent hybrids not yet in his list. - Can't recommend it more highly. :) :) :)

One thing that I'm sure you'll notice when you look at Mr. Butterfield's catalogue is the excellent prices.  I've been looking at the snowdrop prices thread and whilst pleione prices haven't reached those stratospheric heights I think that they've gone a little crazy this year on E-Bay.  For example Pleione Wharfedale Pine Warbler £7 each at Mr. Butterfield's, regularly fetching around £20 on E-bay.  I've bought a few this year, but from Butterfield's, Potterton's and on e-bay from Koolplants in buy it now sales rather than auctions.

I have been buying on ebay but I do hate having to bid for plants I would rather buy it now but you do not get many.
